The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System is the state’s Medicaid system. It provides essential health care to low-income families and individuals in Arizona including pregnant women, disabled persons and senior citizens. Some of the service the AHCCCS covers include doctor visits, dental services, hospitalization, prescription medications and diagnostic tests.
To qualify for AHCCCS standard coverage as a senior citizen, applicants must be 65 years of age and meet the following financial requirements:
- Single applicants are limited to a maximum monthly income of $1,041
- Married applicants are limited to a maximum monthly income of $1,409
There are no asset limitations for the AHCCCS state plan.

The
Arizona Long Term Care System provides coverage for seniors eligible for AHCCCS who require long-term care such as assisted living. This program covers the cost of care services, as well as medical and dental care, prescription medications and specialty care. Approved applicants are assigned a case manager who coordinates their services.
To qualify for the ALTCS program, applicants must be age 65 or older and require a nursing facility level of care. They also must meet the following financial requirements:
- Income below $2,313 per month
- Countable assets valued at no more than $2,000
Exemptions to the asset limit include the applicant’s home as long as either the applicant or their spouse continues to reside there, as well as a single vehicle and personal belongings.
