I have been a resident of Fellowship Square Historic Mesa for three years now. I am in the independent living, and my wife is in the memory care unit. I like it very well. We started out in a two-bedroom apartment, and it was very nice; it had all the amenities and everything. But when my wife moved into the memory care unit, I moved into a one-bedroom, which is quite nice. I am on the ground floor right by a gazebo, and I can walk down about a hundred feet to the pool where I can swim every day. They have different activities. I had to wait until I was seventy-eight years old before I took up painting, but I really am enjoying that. They have other activities like bingo, card games, and stuff like that. I am only probably a football fields length from where my wife is. Earlier today we both just finished our second shots of the COVID vaccine, and now I can start walking over and spending time with her. The staff is very good, but because this is a non-profit organization, the pay is not as high as it should be. A lot of the young people start out here but then after they get good, they move on. But the staff we do have is like part of our family. Because of the virus right now we are getting our meals delivered to us, which reminds me of another thing. I get rent, utilities, TV, and food all for one price. It is quite nice. There is one à la carte that I do, and that is my personal laundry. We have laundromats all over the place, but for $5 they will do my laundry, which is a large basketful, and it is worth it to me to pay that. That is the only extra that I pay. Communication with the administration is the thing my family lacks the most. They do not communicate, although we do have a brand-new manager, and she has been sending out weekly flyers. So it is improving greatly. We have a resident food committee who meets once a month, and each building has a building captain. They receive complaints and suggestions for improvement from all the residents and meet once a month. They discuss some and put it in the publication every month. Because of the COVID virus things sort of got bad, but our dining room is opening back up this coming Monday, and it is like Christmas for most of us. That is a big social hour, and we all look forward to it. You have your groups you eat with and everything and pick up all the gossip. There are some activities I wish they had but they don't because this is a non-profit. I knew that when I came here, because I researched about six or seven different facilities, and a lot of them had what I wanted but the price was too high. I settled for price over activities because I still drive, and I can do some of my own stuff. Considering what I get, it was a good thousand dollars less than most of the competition. It is a non-profit, so you have to look at those things; that is all part of the makeup.

This place was amazing - my mother received hospice care here until she passed away. First, I have to say that if you have ever dealt with larger hospice organizations, you probably had fair service but secretly hoped for something better. That something better is this place. The owners, Dana and Scott, were sweet and super accommodating and treated my mother with kindness and dignity. I was worried at first that it might be strange because the facility is a house, not, say, a formal home with its own light up sign and parking lot. Five minutes there, and it was like Mom was at home. She had her own room, a call button, and the owners and nurses there were dedicated to making her comfortable - she was immediately more comfortable here than she had been in the hospital, and everything was clean, and nothing smelled (no fragrance sprays, body odor, OR bleach). The owners don\'t live there - to be clear about it being a house, it is not a home where someone is renting out a spare room, the whole house IS the care home, and have staff that work day and night shifts, which means that there is always someone awake and alert to care for the residents. They also had a very adorable therapy dog in-training named Samson, who also makes the rounds and checks on patients - I can\'t even say how much that little dog meant to us. Seeing Samson, her face lit up with joy. So glad to have found them.

We only saw one of the rooms at Brookdale Springs Mesa. The person who showed us around, Jamie, was fantastic and great, but this is a place that's under renovation, so we couldn't go to any other places there and see anything. From what I understand, every single thing there is assisted. We were looking for independent living, and all they have is assisted living available. They do not have independent living available, and I was told that they're updating everything with their revamp to assisted living. We couldn't see any amenities because everything was under renovation, but we got to see a one-bedroom that they had as their model. The staff we met was very nice and very honest in disclosing information pretty much from the beginning. We only got to see the outside and then everything else had black tarps up. It looks like it's going to be a great renovation.

We toured The Citadel Senior Living and we really liked it. It was a very nice facility. That is the one we would choose if we have to move my father into a facility. We like the staff; we thought they were very knowledgeable, nice, and caring. We have seen a couple of apartments, we really liked how it was set up, and we thought it was really nice. We saw the dining room, the weight room, the library, activity room, and the pool.

My mother moved there. Her best friend is already there, and that made it easier as a transition without a big fuss. They're very attentive, and watch out for how the residents are doing. It's clean. They have a lot of activities, music, card games, they take them to stores when they need to go, they do housekeeping, if there's a problem they wear pendants, and all they have to do is push a button and they get help. There's available help in bathing or they can have their meds given to them, and they have escort service too. I'm impressed with the staff, they call me and give me updates. My mother loves the food.

The Citadel Senior Living would not work for me, but the gentleman was very accommodating, told us a lot and took us through it. The dining room was fine. The residents seemed to know the gentleman who did the tour and be glad to see him, and he knew all of them by name, which was impressive. It looked clean. The outside looked spare because it's mostly on asphalt and no grassy area. It felt homey, and the residents were nice and it seemed they like to be where they were. Their dining hours were just very short.

The Citadel Senior Living has been very good. The apartment complex is very nice and clean. I have no complaints. The staff has not been a problem. The amenities are good, the pool is nice, and they have a lot of different activities for everybody. I have used the library and the exercise room, and they have a nice card room where we get together. They have an assisted living side also that is very nice. We get breakfast, which is always free, and you can have either lunch or dinner.

The Summit at Sunland Springs is super nice, and they have a nice patio area with lots of chairs and beautiful flowers. They have a room where they do their little projects and watch movies. The eating area is very nice, and the food is decent. My mother's room is beautiful. She is getting better, and she has met a couple of people that she can talk to. Her room is studio type, has no living room, but she has a rocking chair, some furniture and her bed. The staff is amazing, and the director is good, you can call or email her, and she will personally go down and check on mom. The activities are good.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Mesa
Medicaid in Arizona
Medicaid is co-administered by the federal government and each state. This government-sponsored health care program provides low-cost or free medical assistance to qualified people in Mesa and the rest of Arizona. The program pays for health services for seniors, such as home health, personal care and services provided in a nursing home.
Seniors on supplemental security income, also known as SSI, are also eligible for Medicaid. Medicaid services are accessible to seniors in Mesa with incomes under $12,492 a year. This is lower than the Medicaid maximum income in many states due to Arizona’s unique long-term care strategy, which encourages seniors to age in place at home.
Based on a combination of income and total assets, some seniors may have to pay into the Medicaid program. For assistance with enrollment or other Medicaid questions, contact the Arizona Medicaid office at (800) 523-0231 or (602) 417-4000.
Arizona 1115 Demonstration Project Waiver
There are 11 states that use a 1115 Demonstration Project Waiver to distribute and administer Medicaid programs. Arizona’s Medicaid model (AHCCCS or ACCESS) uses home- and community-based services to assist seniors who need help but wish to remain at home. The program also supports assisted living services for eligible participants. Mesa has no PACE program. Instead, the state offers similar programs as part of its robust AHCCCS benefits.
Arizona Long-Term Care Services
Arizona Long-Term Care Services provides financial assistance to Mesa seniors who opt for long-term care at home or in adult foster care, assisted living or a nursing home. This program also helps pay for assisted living. Services include home nursing, meal delivery and some medical equipment, and there are no enrollment caps. Applicants who meet disability benefit requirements are also eligible for these services. For more information on ALTCS, call (877) 236-4752.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Elderlife Bridge Loans
Elderlife helps Mesa seniors transitioning to senior living, including assisted living. This commercial company offers bridge loans to seniors and family members who need help with a gap in available funding to pay for care. Loan approval is based on credit worthiness, but multiple family members are allowed to act as cosigners. Typically loan providers require that a plan for long-term funding be in place prior to loan approval. For more information or to apply, call (888) 228-4500.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance plans can cover the cost of assisted living facilities, although most providers require that policies begin before a condition that requires long-term care arises. If seniors are still living at home, it may not be too late to purchase long-term care insurance. Fidelity has an online calculator that helps families determine the cost of a policy. For more information, call (866) 489-0963
