I went to Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West. It was dark, it felt dirty, it had a dead roach on the floor in the hallway, it had peeling wallpaper, and it had dirty carpet. It had peeling concrete backing around the pool. They forgot our appointment when we got there, and we felt very insignificant. The staff had to rush through our appointment after she had forgotten it. My dad doesn't walk very well, and they didn't have any wheelchair facility, so we had to walk down these great-big, long hallways forwards, backwards, and around to show us everything. It wasn't accommodating to him at all, not being able to walk well, and she took us up and down these hallways knowing that he couldn't walk very well. It was kind of a rushed situation. Everything seemed to be falling apart, but they were redoing the driveway. They should be redoing the inside.

My father stayed at Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West for 2 weeks when I was on vacation, and that was wonderful. The staff took care of him very well, his apartment was nice, he liked the meals, they had activities, and they had invited us to some even when he wasn't staying there. We did participate, they had activities around the pool where they had a band, so it seems like they have a very nice choice of activities and a variety of activities. Solstice was independent living, but they did have onsite nurses as well, that's why we were able to live in there. They had transportation if my father needed it, he has a little dementia so they had somebody go get him every morning and bring him to his meals, and that was wonderful. They made sure he participated in things and he got back to his room.

I wouldn't go to Solstice Senior Living. It wasn't updated, and it looked very old. They need to upgrade it. The rooms were OK, but the kitchen was very small, it did not offer much, and it looked like a kitchenette. The staff was very nice.

We're satisfied with Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West. There were some plumbing problems the first night my sister went in there, but that has been resolved. They painted her new 1-bedroom apartment, put in new carpet, and everything is nice, fresh and clean. They have variety of rooms. The halls aren't too great since they need to have new carpeting. They have a lot of activities that we were impressed with and my sister has gone to several of those and we're happy about that. The food has been good and everybody has been nice to my sister.

My mother was a resident of Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West. They provide lots of activities, they have a nice dining room, and the people in charge were very nice. However, we had to pay extra for any additional care she needed. They have games, entertainment in the afternoon, movie nights, church services, and a free shuttle, which she really took advantage of. However, she refused to use the call button, so she fell several weeks ago and laid on the floor all night long. We thought we needed more oversight. The building was not in the best shape, and they didnt keep it up like they used to.

I'm moving into Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West. I love it. It is very friendly. There are activities. I tell my family that it is noisy, and that's what I like. At this place, there is always somebody getting people ready to go listen to music, and there is a bingo game going on, so the place is doing things. They also have washer and dryer without you having to pay for it, and there are plenty of them (one on each floor or wing). The room has a full kitchen. It is small, but it has a full-sized refrigerator, a full-sized stove, a microwave, and a very small kitchen sink. They have lots of cabinets in their kitchens. The apartment that I'm moving into is 600-some feet. The only thing is that I do not have is a walk-in closet. The swimming pool is right down the hall from my apartment; it is a beautiful pool. They also have a koi pond. They have a beautiful garden area, and then on the other side of the building they have a very nice pool area with lots of entertainment outside if you want it. The staff members are very nice and very accommodating. The menu looks great. The place is older, but very well kept. They're also going through some outside remodeling right now.

The Heritage Tradition was a nice, well-maintained, new facility, but they didn't seem like a fantastic match for my parents. It was pretty expensive and they didn't really have the size of apartment we were looking for, for them. We wanted a larger one for them to share. Everybody was very polite and helpful during the tour. It was a pretty large community, so they had a bigger than average list of activities that they were doing. I only met the person who toured us, and they did a good job of giving me a good idea of what to expect. The food was good; it was one of the better food places I've been in.

It was very good. Everybody was very nice. In one room, they were playing music for them, and they have concerts and things. The dining area looked nice, clean, and inviting. However, we're Jewish, and there was too much pork on the menu. It was on the menu for three days a week and I don't eat pork. The person that assisted me was very well spoken. The facility was clean, really bright, and very nice. You could get lost in there, though. In some facilities, they have numbers on the rooms you go into. In this place, you could only know by remembering where everything is. You could get lost trying to find a room.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Sun City West
Medicaid in Arizona
The federally regulated and jointly funded Medicaid program ensures access to vital health care services for low-income Americans from coast to coast. In Arizona, the state Medicaid program called the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System covers more than 1.4 million state residents, one-fifth of whom are elderly, blind or disabled.
Those who qualify for the AHCCCS program receive numerous health care services, including primary and specialist care, hospital and emergency room services, lab tests, diagnostic screenings, X-rays and prescription medications.
Qualifying for Arizona Medicaid
Sun City West seniors aged 65 or older and disabled or blind adults aged 64 or younger must be American citizens or legal immigrants to qualify for coverage. Applicants must also meet the program’s income guidelines, which allow a maximum monthly income of $1,041 for single people and $1,409 for married couples who both apply.
Senior residents of Sun City West can apply for AHCCCS medical coverage online or by phone at (800) 565-5465.
Arizona Long-Term Care System
Sun City West residents who are eligible for the AHCCCS program and assessed as needing long-term care may qualify for services through the Arizona Long Term Care System. The program provides comprehensive Medicaid medical coverage and:
- Service coordination
- Case management services
- Hospice care
- Adult day health services
- In-home care
- Assisted living care
- Nursing home care
- $1,000 in dental services per year
To qualify for the ALTCS program, applicants must:
- Be aged 65 or older or blind or disabled if aged 64 or younger
- Be assessed to verify they require a nursing home level of care
- Have no more than $2,313 in monthly income and $2,000 in countable assets if single
- Have no more than $4,626 in monthly income and $4,000 in combined countable assets if married and both spouses are applying
All sources of income count against the limits. However, several assets are excluded, including a principal home valued under $585,000, household furnishings, one vehicle, personal effects and irrevocable burial trusts.
Exceptions to Income and Asset Limits
Arizona Medicaid offers two options that may help seniors qualify for the ALTCS program if they’re over the income or asset limits.
- A married applicant who’s over the limit for income and assets may have them reduced significantly if their spouse isn’t applying for coverage. They may transfer a maximum of $3,160.50 of their monthly income and up to $126,420 in jointly owned assets to their spouse, which may bring their countable amounts down below the required limits. These transfers are living and resource allowances mandated by federal law to deter spousal impoverishment.
- Those who exceed the income limits can set up a Qualified Income Trust. This type of trust is specifically designed for Medicaid applicants who have excessive income but need assistance to pay for long-term care. Any monthly income that’s over the $2,313 limit must be placed in the trust and can only be removed to pay care expenses or medical bills approved by Medicaid.
To apply for long-term care services through the program, seniors and disabled adults can visit the Phoenix ALTCS office located at 801 East Jefferson Street or call (888) 621-6880.
