The assortment of floor plans and their square footage compared to other communities. Walk both courtyards and see how beautiful and well kept they are maintained. The staff are very friendly as is the community of residents. A short tour of the facility will verify the close-knit community of residents and their high regards for both the staff and dinning facility. A grateful resident of apartment #159

I moved into Heritage Sun City, and it is very nice and pleasant. In many ways, I'm surprised. It's very comfortable, there's convenient living, and I love it here. They have a gym, swimming pool, water aerobics, movies, knitting groups, arts and crafts, sewing, painting, and from time to time somebody comes from the outside to give lectures, or play music. It's very nice, and they're very friendly. The staff is helpful, friendly, they know residents by their first name, they greet you, and it's like a family environment. It's very clean, and they have room service every second week.

The one that really stood to us was the Wooddale. We really like it and the beautiful grounds. Everything is very handy and laid out well. I like the way that the main dining room is in the middle. The food is delicious, too. Wooddale is a smaller place, so I feel more comfortable there. It has two stories, but they have an elevator. No matter which apartment you are in, you are close to the main dining, library, and so on. The only thing that we didnt like is that they don't have a memory care.

The Woodmark was a little over our budget, but it was very nice and very classy. You can do anything there. They have game time, and it is easy to walk around there and visit with people. They have a shuttle service, a pool, and a beauty salon. If you need more help, they can give you more help. The staff member who assisted me was very nice.

The Woodmark at Sun City had a pool, a gym, and different activities for their residents. The place was very nice and very well decorated. There was a TV and a DVD player in the room. There was a community lounging area where you can go in and watch TV with the other residents. They also had a Bingo afternoon.

We visited The Woodmark at Sun City. It looked pretty good and it was near a lot of things. It's about two blocks away from Bell Road where there's a whole bunch of stores, and you could walk there if you wanted to. I can't say anything bad about them. We did not make an appointment beforehand, and everyone was fine with that. They didn't seem to be discomforted that we just walked in. Everybody just greeted us. We said hello to them and they said hello back. They seemed to be a friendly bunch. There was a man giving a lecture when we were there. However, I didn't like their menu because there was too much pork.

My mother-in-law has been at The Gardens of Sun City for five months now. So far, everything has been really good. The place is always clean. My mother-in-law seems to be adjusting well. The staff is wonderful, very friendly, and very accommodating. They have music all the time, which she really enjoys, and Bingo and games. She has a studio-type room and it's really nice. We had it divided with a dresser, so it looks like she has a bedroom and a small dining area. She always says the food tastes like a 5-star hotel.

The rooms were very nice, spacious, clean, and everything looked really good. The staff was very good, very helpful, and friendly. It seemed like an active place because the residents were moving around and interacting. The amenities were all very nice. There was a really nice courtyard. I liked that the rooms had balconies and nice screened-in patios. There were nice interior sitting areas and the restaurant was very nice.

The cost of senior care services vary widely by type. Nursing home care in Sun City costs three times as much as adult day health care services, while assisted living costs are a little over half the cost of nursing home care. In-home care, such as homemaker services and home health aides, is almost $1000 more per month than assisted living. The cost of assisted living potentially includes expenses like rent and upkeep, while home care does not. It is important to take these factors into account when considering what type of care is best. Assisted living expenses in Sun City are lower than in-home care, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious seniors. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Medical assistance is available for low-income residents in Sun City through a section 1115 demonstration waiver called The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System. The program offers health insurance for seniors 65 and older who don’t need nursing home care and contracts with other programs to provide long-term care services such as assisted living.
There are no monthly premiums for those who qualify. To be eligible, seniors must:
The AHCCCS has a special division for elderly and disabled residents called the Arizona Long Term Care System. This program provides long-term care at home, in adult foster care, in assisted living facilities and in nursing homes. It’s an entitlement program, so there are no enrollment caps; anyone who qualifies will receive service.
Applicants need to be 65 or older and have a qualifying disability or require assistance equivalent to nursing home care. There are asset resource caps for the program ($3000 for couples and $2000 for individuals). The applicant’s primary home is exempt from the resource cap as long as long as it’s valued under $572,000, as is their vehicle. There are also monthly income caps, but they vary depending on marital status, if the applicant’s spouse has applied for Medicaid and whether they live independently. Medicaid recipients who are accepted into ALTCS will work with a caseworker to develop a plan for long-term care that best suits their needs.
For residents who need assisted living or nursing home facilities, ALTCS will pay for medical and care related services, but not room and board because they are not considered medical services. Qualified participants will be responsible for paying these costs.
To sign up for AHCCCS you can apply online or call (866) 495-6738.
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Seniors in need of immediate funding for assisted living costs can get loans through Elderlife Financial. These loans are designed to allow seniors and their families to pay assisted living costs while waiting for the sale of a home or awaiting approval for benefit programs.
Bridge loans are structured like a line of credit; a loan is approved for a total amount, but individuals can take out more funds as needed and pay interest on what they’ve borrowed. Multiple people can cosign for a single loan, lessening the importance of individual credit scores, and the approval time can be within 24 hours. For more information on applying for a bridge loan, contact Elderlife Financial or call (888) 228-4500.
Veterans Aid and Attendance Program
The VA Aid and Attendance program is a supplemental cash program that is available to veterans over 65 who need assistance with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, medication management and meal prep. Applicants are required to submit documentation of their active, wartime service. The financial requirements for eligibility are complex so applicants are encouraged to contact their local VA benefits office for help in applying to the program. For more information, please call (800) 827-1000.
