We decided that The Cottage at Artesia Gardens is where we want my brother to go. The rooms have access to the outside, which I liked. The layout of the location was beautiful. There was at least one activity room, a group dining hall, and another play room. The common areas were not as spectacular as the others I've seen.

My father moved in to The Cottage at Artesia Gardens. It's a small community. There's not a big turnover in staff, and they're very happy there. It's a cozy , country-like, and cute facility. They take very good care of the people. The bedrooms are small. He was in the hospital for a few days with pneumonia, and they were wondering whether to put him into physical therapy or not because they had to make sure that he was going to be walking. He got back to The Cottage and when I went to see him the next day, they had him up and walking, and I was really impressed. They're very caring and fun. It's the least expensive in Orange County and not deluxe by any means, but they're very caring people, and I'm very satisfied with it. They give them snacks, and he seems to be eating those. I went to four or five facilities, and while they were all very nice, this one fit my dad and our family the best.

I didn't care for Harvest Retirement at all. It's very hard to enter, it's not very appealing, and it's such an old place. It's very clinical or hospital-like. I found things that were dirty, and I saw traps. In some facilities, you see a lot of the staff, you can talk to them or they talk to you, or they introduce you to them, but they didn't do any of that there. They didn't provide information as far as a pamphlet and descriptions, pricings, or amenities.

I met one of the three owners of Harvest Retirement. He was very hospitable and willing to accommodate. They have the ability to provide a single room or a room with a partner. However, they charge an extra $450 to administer the medication. Regardless of that, I did feel like they were making a very strong effort to update the place. The staff seemed like good people, and it seemed like a good place. They have balconies that would give family some privacy; it was well-thought-out. They try to keep the people involved with activities. They also were making an aggressive effort on updating the place. The colors that they chose made you feel warm, and you don't feel like you are walking into an assisted living or a convalescent place. It made you feel comfortable.
Buena Park was first known as a dairy center and creamery, but is better known today as Southern California’s “Entertainment Zone.” Only 22 miles southeast of Los Angeles and adjacent to Anaheim, this city is home to Knott’s Berry Farm, America’s first theme park.
Thanks to Buena Park’s Mediterranean climate and high average of sunshine-filled days, the fun seldom gets rained out for the city’s nearly 100,000 residents. An ideal central location and a variety of services for the elderly make assisted living in Buena Park an excellent living choice.
Buena Park’s location as the “Center of the Southland” puts the city in a prime position to enjoy all the activities that the Los Angeles and Orange County areas have to offer. Despite this convenience, residents of assisted living in Buena Park need not leave their own city limits to find excellent entertainment options. Food and fun come together at both the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament and the swashbuckling Pirates’ Dinner Adventure. For a more traditional theater experience, try one of the many events sponsored by the Buena Park Civic Theatre or enjoy a performance of the Buena Park Community Chorus. The Buena Park Historical Society organizes tours of the historic Jayne-Whitaker Estate and Bacon House Museum. Senior residents will find a multitude of activities and services to enhance their lives at the Buena Park Senior Activity Center including scheduled trips, legal services, art instruction, exercise classes and health screenings.
The city has several local community parks, and nearby beach and mountain retreats are also available to offer seniors who choose assisted living in Buena Park an outdoor respite. A favorite slice of nature in the city is the 105-acre Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, nestled at the foot of the Coyote Hills.
Buena Park Downtown is the area’s premier retail destination, and the Knott’s Berry Farm Marketplace is another fun place to shop. Krikorian theatres, across from the downtown shopping mall, provides 18 large screens playing Hollywood’s latest movies in many exciting formats.
Since 1972, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital has been serving the healthcare needs of seniors enjoying assisted living in Buena Park. In addition to an extensive array of outpatient services, the 141-bed acute care hospital is well known for providing mental health services to residents in both Los Angeles and Orange County. The hospital has been recognized for excellence in providing stroke care, specialized surgical programs and operates a designated Wound Care Center.
Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) provides both bus and Metrolink train services to communities of assisted living in Buena Park. The OCTA’s ACCESS and Senior Mobility programs are available to assist the elderly in their travels. The Buena Park Senior Activity Center also operates the ST*R Runabout program to transport members to the center and/or to medical appointments.
