I visited this facility

I went to Carlton Senior Living Fremont last year, and I liked it. It was modern looking, nice, clean, and it was my first choice last year. The person who welcomed me was excellent and very good.

Lincoln Retirement Villa seems to be an appropriate place. It's clean, they have a decent staff, and there are beds available. They have activities for the residents, and they have outside volunteer groups who come in to provide things and services. They offer a lot of outings and they go out to lunch or dinner, or sometimes they go to the movies. Basic assistance with treatments and medication management is being provided as well. They have LPNs and RNs available on call for delegation. I looked at the menu, and they have three meals and snacks available; it looked good.

Carlton Senior Living is a very nice and upscale community, but it's outside our budget. The rooms are very nice studios and 1-bedroom apartments. It's a very well-appointed community in terms of aesthetics. They have good and adequate staff members, they have everything, and it's excellent. I saw the menu and the snacks that they have available for the residents. The dining room is nice and big with tables, and in the café the residents can just go in if they just want something like coffee, a sandwich, or popcorn.

We picked out Carlton in Fremont because it's the only place that's pet friendly. My mother is incontinent and we've had a couple of little issues when my mom calls for help. It takes them quite a while to get up there and take care of her. Other than that, they provide medication management and she also has a partner in her room that helps. She has a nice and small 1-bedroom apartment where everything is wheelchair-accessible. It has everything she needs, like a microwave, a small refrigerator, a balcony, and a nice living room. They have things for the residents like Bingo, a movie theater, a beauty salon, and outings, like on certain days they are taken to stores. It's also helpful that they provide transportation to the doctor since my mother no longer drives. She loves the food, it's healthy, and they really enjoy the meals.

Fremont Hills was a small, clean place. I saw a studio room, a one-bedroom, and a two-bedroom apartment. I had a very good experience, but the price was too much for me.

We chose Brookdale Fremont because my mom is familiar with the area. It was also a lot less expensive. My mom's apartment is clean and nice, and has brand-new carpeting. She says the food is mediocre, and the place is a little dated. I loved the fact that they do their bed sheets and clean their apartments, and that there's a library.

I visited Brookdale. I liked that they had a fire escape program and fire doors; that really reassured me. The staff was very nice, concerned that I might be stuck in traffic, and invited me back for lunch. They visited my house and brought a holiday gift, which I thought was nice.

My uncle is in Brookdale Fremont. It's nice and it's clean. They have a beauty salon there, a shuttle service that takes you anywhere: to your appointments, shopping, anywhere within five miles. They have a workout room, a workout pool, a big hot tub that you can do exercises in, they have activities there, the residents go on trips, play music, everything. They teach him how to take care of himself a little better and how to put his clothes on. He's in independent assisted living right now. The staff has been really great so far. They're very helpful. It's not brand new, but it's nice. The food is pretty good, and he likes it. I see a lot going on, but he hasn't done any activities as a group yet. Part of the reason we put him in there is because they allowed us to take him there temporarily and it was a furnished apartment already, so he could move in right away. It's a lot more convenient.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Fremont

Medicaid in California

Low-income seniors in Fremont who meet income and asset requirements may be eligible to receive financial assistance for their care through Medi-Cal, California’s state Medicaid plan. Medi-Cal pays directly for a variety of home care and nursing home services.

To be eligible for Medi-Cal, applicants must be at least 65 years old and residents of California. Single applicants may have a monthly income of up to $1,242 and up to $2,000 in countable assets. Couples applying for Medicaid may have a monthly income of up to $1,682 and countable assets of up to $3,000. Medi-Cal is an entitlement, so all approved applicants receive assistance.

In addition to regular Medicaid, Fremont residents who reside in a nursing home may apply for Institutional/Nursing Home Medicaid. This plan has no income limit, but the asset limit for a single applicant is $2,000, and the asset limit for couples who are both applying is $3,000. Like standard Medi-Cal, this plan is an entitlement, so everyone who meets program eligibility guidelines may receive financial aid.

While Medi-cal does not cover other long-term senior care options, such as assisted living, the state provides a waiver program to help pay for this type of care. The Assisted Living Waiver is a Home and Community-Based Waiver that covers services received while living in an assisted living facility. This program is only available in select counties, including Alameda County, where Fremont is located. Unlike regular Medi-Cal, the ALW program has an enrollment cap, meaning that eligible applicants may be placed on a waiting list.

For more information on Medi-Cal and the ALW program, Fremont residents may visit the California Department of Health Care Services website or call their local county office at (888) 999-4772.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

CalPACE

CalPACE is available to all seniors who meet eligibility criteria. Applicants who qualify for Medi-Cal pay nothing for CalPACE services, but those with higher incomes may have to pay for a portion of their assisted living costs. To begin the enrollment process, speak with a CalPACE specialist by calling the local Center for Elders’ Independence at (844) 319-1150.

Optional State Supplement

Fremont seniors aged 65 and over who qualify for Supplemental Security Income may be eligible to receive additional money through an optional state supplement. The OSS benefit is available to low-income seniors who are unable to live independently due to disability or age, and they may use the funds toward the cost of room and board in an assisted living facility. In California, the total individual benefit is $895.72. Fremont residents who wish to learn more about the OSS benefit or apply should visit their local Social Security office or call (800) 772-1213.

Assisted Living Bridge Loans

Fremont seniors who are transitioning to an assisted living facility and need short-term financial assistance may be eligible for an Elderlife Bridge Loan.
