My wife was put in here by Kaiser Perm., and their care is abysmal. They cannot care about the health of someone if they don\'t care. Some of the staff are top notch but most including the woman in charge are of the lowest caliber they can find. My wife was recently moved to a room with NO phone, and that has created a whole host of new problems. I have not talked to my wife in over a week, because they don\'t have a phone that can reach her room. Or so they tell me..... They could not care less.

I liked The Chateau of Long Beach the most of the places I visited. It was warm, clean, it seemed like they had good activities for the seniors living there. It just seemed like it would give my father a better feeling of home. It offered the best living conditions for my dad. There were a couple of men playing chess, there were some people sitting in the theater room, they were singing, and my dad loves to sing. The staff was engaged, and appeared to be active with the members. The ones I met with were very informative, kind, and nice.

My sister moved into the Chateau of Long Beach. I would not give it a good rating or a good recommendation. I'm not happy with what happened there before my sister passed away. I never got a contract from them even though I sat down with the administrator and went through the contract; he never sent it to me. A couple of weeks after I sat down with him I asked him about that, and he said he was busy, but that he would give it to me, which he never did. The care was not good and the only saving grace was the hospice, which has nothing to do with the Chateau. It's $2,400 a month and it's not worth it. They were not set up to provide around-the-clock care, even though they assured me they were. I was there at numerous times, at different hours of the day and night, and I was not happy with the service at all. I have not heard from them since my sister passed. I never received a condolence letter, and I never got the contract. There were a couple of people on the staff that were outstanding, but everybody else was subpar, including the administrator. I saw the food and I wasn't impressed. The facility is old, not particularly well laid out, the rooms are not very big, and they have two people to a room. I was not happy with my sister being there, but we couldn't afford anything above that.

I visited the Chateau of Long Beach with my friend. It was far for her and not quite as updated, but the people were fantastic, and the staff was amazing. She said if she can move in with them tomorrow, she would, but it was a little far for her. I think it was a thorough representation of what I saw online. I thought it was a nice place for her. There were a lot of things going on, and they have social things, like exercise and bingo. The dining room provided for social activity with smaller tables, and people could sit together if they chose to, which was a nice thing. It was arranged nicely and clean.

I went to Palmcrest Grand. The tour was good, but there were lots of remodeling going on. There was an apartment-type room with a balcony. They also had shared rooms and private rooms. They showed a board of activities. Activities were basic.

Vista Del Mar was very nice. The people were very courteous, very responsive, and on time, and the residents seemed happy. The first floor and the third floor were clean and spacious. They had a whole calendar of activities. They go to church on Sundays and have special night outings. They served three meals a day. The staff was very friendly and very attentive to my mother-in-law.

We chose Vista Del Mar Senior Living for my mother-in-law because it is not far from our house and it is convenient. We like the overall feel of the community. They have a nice courtyard in the center. They have lot of activity for their residents. They're very attentive to my mother-in-law.

My first impression of Vista Del Mar was that it's not the place for my friend to be. There are too many people in the full stage of dementia going around in wheelchairs and not knowing what's happening. He's not at that stage yet. But the general appearance was nice and the place was clean, I didn't see anything wrong with it. The person who assisted me was very helpful and gave us a very nice tour. She also answered most of our questions. The dining area also looked nice, and another one of their amenities is an area where you could use the computers.

The staff at Vista Del Mar Senior Living was nice, but the rooms were kind of small. The place was clean, nice, and looked friendly.

Costs for senior care vary widely depending on the level of care, the location and the number of direct-service hours each week. In Long Beach, nursing home care costs are significantly higher than assisted living. Prices for both homemaker services and a home health aide are comparable to assisted living costs. Adult day health is the least expensive senior care service in the area.
Seniors who want to compare the costs of various types of care need to factor in expenses associated with maintaining a home, such as upkeep, utilities and rent payments. Generally speaking, residential senior care services such as assisted living include room and board.

Medicaid is a national health insurance program that is jointly funded by the federal and state governments. It provides limited access to essential health services for low-income, low-asset Americans.
In California, Medicaid is known as Medi-Cal. Seniors who earn less than $1,242 and senior couples who make less than $1,682 may qualify if they hold less than $2,000 and $3,000 in assets respectively.
Like all other states, Medi-Cal has a retroactive look-back period that assesses all transferred assets and money toward Medi-Cal-eligibility. In California, the look-back period is 30 months.
Applicants must declare earnings from all sources when applying for Medi-Cal, including wages, pension income and interest earned on investments. Countable assets include all real estate except the applicant’s principal residence as long as either the applicant or their spouse continues to live in the home.
Personal belongings such as clothing, household furniture, one vehicle and collectibles are exempt from Medi-Cal asset counts. In California, there is no upper limit on the value of the applicant’s principal residence.
Seniors who have incomes that exceed Medi-Cal limits may qualify for coverage on a Share of Cost basis that calculates Medi-Cal premiums based on the current income of the senior. In many cases, Share of Cost fees are higher than private health insurance premiums.
Optional State Supplementation
Seniors in California aged 65 and older who either receive or are eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits may qualify for additional Optional State Supplementation funding from the state for use toward the room-and-board portion of assisted living costs.
The OSS program provides seniors who reside in an assisted living facility with a maximum of $1,194.37 per month in combined SSI benefits for individuals and $2,388.74 for a couple.
For more information on SSI Optional State Supplementation in California, contact the Long Beach Social Security Office at (800) 772-1213.
Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Program
Veterans and their survivors who receive a VA pension and are housebound or limited in their ability to complete daily living activities independently may be eligible for VA pension top-up funds through the Aid and Attendance and Housebound program.
For Aid and Attendance benefits, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
For the Housebound benefits, applicants must be assessed as 100 percent disabled under VA guidelines and largely limited to their primary residence as a result of the disability. Note that applicants cannot receive both the Aid and Attendance and Housebound allowance concurrently, and disabilities do not need to be related to military service.
For more information on the Aid and Attendance and Housebound program, contact the Los Angeles County Veterans Service Center at Patriotic Hall at (877) 452-8387.
Seniors who want to make friends, stay active and participate in low-cost events and outings can visit one of the senior centers in Long Beach and neighboring areas. These community centers for older adults offer a wide range of exercise classes, arts and crafts, and organized activities geared toward seniors.
