This facility has zero communication between staff. They do not read and or care if a patient has food allergies. In the 20 days my dad was in this facility he was served one food he is deathly allergic to... 5 times.

My father-in-law has been in Atria Palm Desert. I really like it. They're really good. They're very focused on making sure he does everything he's supposed to in terms of his medication. He has activities that he participates in. I like it a lot. The rooms are more than adequate for what he does and what he needs. There's plenty of room in there and he's very comfortable. I have no idea about the food, but he hasn't complained. I'm not quite sure about the amenities. We're not allowed to walk around the grounds with the virus. I think they have a pool, but I'm not positive. I'm not quite sure what he has access to. I am not interacting with the staff very much. The ones I have interacted with were extremely helpful. The big plus with Atria Palm Desert is that up by my father's room there's this small area outside. He has a sliding glass door and there's this small area where he can sit outside in privacy. He's got a little balcony and he loves it.

The Carlotta was very nice. They're very friendly and they have a good reputation. Their skilled nursing facility is rated one of the best in the Coachella Valley. We liked their system. The apartments were nice, but small. My wife is in a wheelchair and she needs a bigger space to be able to turn around. The activities seemed good. They have exercises, classes, and they go on excursions. The meals we had were good.

Oakmont of Segovia was a step higher in amenities than the other places we saw, but it was more expensive. The meal we ate there was very good. They have underground parking, which is extremely nice out here in the desert when it's 120 degrees in the summer. The apartments were fine. The staff was very friendly and very nice. If you have to go from independent living to assisted living you stay in the same apartment and the assistance comes to you. That way you don't have to move to a specialized assisted living apartment.

My brother likes Manorcare Health Services, but I don't find them very efficient at all. The people who are doing the work with the residents aren't bad, but their management is horrible. They don't answer the phone many times even in the main line. You can't get anybody to talk to. The message system has 25 to 30 rings before you ever get anybody's voicemail. It's poorly run, but the CNAs are OK. They need to train their people and the management of the different groups, whether it's therapy, wound care, or nursing, to be able to take care of the residents better. They don't have enough people to take care of a lot of the needs.

The Carlotta has fabulous activities and friendly people. I'm new, so yesterday they had a party for new people with hors d'oeuvres and everything. Everybody came up to greet us. It has its own Carlota Cafe beside the dining room. It's immaculate, and the grounds are kept beautifully with gorgeous flowers. I have a casita, a regular little house with a patio.

The Carlotta was very nice and very clean. The setting was very lovely. It looked very comfortable and inviting. They have a nice restaurant and outdoors eating areas that looked inviting. I really liked it. I want to stay there when the time comes. The community is very accommodating to family members. The staff was super-friendly and very accommodating. They even called back to see if we were still looking around. The people seemed very happy there.

Atria Palm Desert had restaurant style dining, and they could dine anytime, not set dining. They did have transportation on weekends to church. The rooms were fine. The location was good. They had outings on Wednesdays that varied where they go, like shopping, Sunny Land, pet museum, and to the movies. They had Black Jack, bingo, and flower decorating and flower arrangement classes.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Palm Desert
Medicaid in California
Medi-Cal is the state Medicaid plan offered to low-income individuals and families throughout California. It provides health insurance to those who aren’t able to afford it and aims to ensure that all Californians have access to safe health care services. Some of the costs Medi-Cal covers include hospitalization, doctor and dentist services, medical devices, prescription medications, transportation and nursing home care.
To qualify for the state plan as a senior citizen, applicants must be 65 years of age or older. Single applicants may not have an income exceeding $1,242 per month or assets exceeding a value of $2,000. Married applicants applying together are allowed an income of up to $1,682 per month and $3,000 in countable assets. Exempt assets include the applicant’s home, a single vehicle and personal belongings.
To apply for Medi-Cal, seniors can complete an application online or call (800) 300-1506.
While the state Medi-Cal plan doesn’t cover the cost of assisted living services, seniors can apply for coverage under one of the state’s two waiver programs.
Assisted Living Waiver
The Assisted Living waiver is available to low-income seniors who reside in assisted living facilities that qualify for financial aid programs. The waiver covers expenses, including the cost of care, medical treatment, dental care and nonmedical transportation. Seniors are responsible for paying the cost of room and board out of their own pocket.
Financial eligibility requirements are the same as the state Medi-Cal plan. Additionally, seniors must be willing to live in an assisted living facility as opposed to a nursing home, qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal and require assistance with at least two activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating or toileting.
To apply, seniors can contact the Institute on Aging at (408) 474-0679 or any Care Coordinator Agency in the Riverside County area.
Multipurpose Senior Services Program
The Multipurpose Senior Services program provides assistance to seniors who choose to reside either at home or in assisted living facilities yet require a nursing home level of care. This program exists to reduce the number of seniors living in nursing home facilities throughout the state. It covers the costs of a variety of services, including personal care, nurse visits, occupational and physical therapy and transportation.
This program has the same financial requirements as the Medi-Cal state plan. This program is only open to 12,000 participants, so waiting lists are typically long and seniors may be required to submit to annual reassessments.
To apply or to inquire about the wait list and the application process, seniors can contact the California Department of Health Services at (800) 541-5555.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
State Supplemental Payment
California’s State Supplemental Payment provides a cash benefit to seniors and disabled individuals who receive SSI and reside in long-term care facilities. Its purpose is to help its recipients pay for costs that aren’t covered by Medicaid programs, such as room and board. Payments are determined by the applicant’s income and living situation and may be as high as $423.37 per month for individual recipients and double for married couples.
Seniors who are Medicaid eligible automatically qualify for the SSP. To apply, seniors can call the Social Security Office in Riverside County at (800) 772-1213.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services is a temporary solution for senior citizens unable to immediately afford the upfront costs associated with moving into an assisted living facility. The company provides bridge loans, which are paid directly to the senior’s place of residence. The senior is then required to repay this loan in monthly installments.
To qualify, seniors must meet minimum credit and income eligibility requirements. Those whose have difficulty qualifying alone may still be eligible since a maximum of six cosigners may apply and help repay the loan.
To apply, seniors can call Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500.
