In Pomona, the cost of a semiprivate room in a nursing home is almost $3,000 more expensive than the next costliest option, homemaker services or a home health aide. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Pomona

Medicaid in California

Medicaid, also known as Medi-Cal in California, is a national health insurance program that provides coverage for low-income individuals and families. It’s funded by the federal and state governments and covers necessary health benefits, such as:

  • Outpatient services
  • Hospitalization
  • Prescription drugs
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Lab services
  • Chronic disease management

Qualify for Medi-Cal

To qualify for Medi-Cal, applicants cannot earn more than $16,395 annually or  approximately $1,271 per month, and couples can’t earn more than $22,108 per year ($1,720 monthly). Each additional person in the family adds $5,700 to the annual limit. There’s also an asset cap of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 per couple. Individuals may also qualify for Medi-Cal if they are:

  • Aged 65 or older or younger than 20
  • Blind, disabled or pregnant
  • Diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer
  • In a nursing or intermediate care home
  • A refugee in the United States for a limited time

Medi-Cal doesn’t pay for assisted living facilities, but certain waivers can help seniors who need help paying for these services.

Multipurpose Senior Services Program

Another waiver option is the Multipurpose Senior Services Program. This waiver covers a variety of services to delay placement in a nursing home, including personal care services, a personal emergency response system and meal services. To qualify for the MSSP waiver, the individual must be 65 years of age or older, require nursing home care and live in a county with an MSSP site.

While there is no site in Pomona, there are two nearby in Los Angeles: AltaMed and the Jewish Family Services of LA. To sign up for the MSSP waiver, call (800) 510-2020.

VA Aid and Attendance

The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly pension designed to help veterans and their surviving spouses pay for long-term senior care. Aid and Attendance is for veterans who are over the age of 65 and require assistance with daily tasks. Veterans who receive this pension may be disqualified from Medi-Cal or VA disability, but the individual can choose the higher of the pensions.

To qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, the applicant must:

  • Be 65 years of age or older
  • Have served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War or the Gulf War
  • Be honorably discharged

Additionally, applicants must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Be a nursing home resident due to physical or mental incapacity
  • Need assistance with activities of daily living
  • Be bedridden

If a spouse is applying for VA Aid and Attendance, they must have been living with the veteran at the time of death and be single at the time of the claim.

Veterans are eligible for up to $26,765 annually in pension, including their yearly income. Medical expenses past the maximum annual pension rate are deducted from a veteran’s income.

To apply for VA Aid and Attendance or for more information, call (800) 827-1000.

Elderlife Bridge Loans

An Elderlife Bridge Loan is a short-term loan designed to help seniors and their families pay for assisted living room and board and services. For convenience, the payment is sent directly to the assisted living facility.

Bridge loans are useful for seniors who need to move into assisted living quickly while waiting for more permanent financing via the sale of a home or benefits approval. The average credit score of the applicant is taken into account and up to six cosigners may apply, which greatly improves the chances of approval. These loans can be split between multiple borrowers as a way of lessening the burden on one family member.

Loans are approved quickly and funds can be accessed in as little as 24 hours.  Seniors interested in applying for an Elderlife Bridge Loan can apply online or call (888) 228-4500.
