I had a very good impression of The Pines. I'm impressed with the cleanliness and the food is very nice. The staff member who gave us the tour was very informative and helpful. It looks like they have a lot of activities. They were doing some sort of cooking thing in the memory care are when we visited and they have shows. The food was excellent. The layout seemed to be nice and good.

We visited Atria, and I liked that they have independent living, assisted living, and a great restaurant. I liked everything they said about it. The staff was helpful. They showed us a 1- and 2-bedroom, and they have a memory care unit. I was very satisfied with Atria, and I'm not going to look at others.

We were impressed with Atria Rocklin. It's nice, it's clean, the food seemed to be good, and the menu was balanced. I didn't have any problems with it. The amenities were good. They had a library and they had three meals a day. They gave me a list of activities and they had something going every day. Of the ones we visited, that was the one we liked the best. The person that showed me around was very good.

We have been to Atria Rocklin. It's a beautiful area, and the place fantastic, but I think you need to be a little younger to live there. The lady who assisted me was quite lovely. She assisted us well and was very helpful. We ate there, and food was very good. The dining area looked very appetizing. They had a swimming pool, which was nice. It looked like something I would enjoy using. However, they were expensive, and they did not have two bathrooms in their largest unit. They have the garages and you have to climb all those stairs to get into the house, so we don't want to do that.

Overall, Atria Rocklin was pretty good, but there were a couple of incidences with hygiene that I wasn't satisfied with. The rooms were older but nice. Some of the staff was good, and some were not. My mom thought it was OK.

Care Cost Comparison
The average cost of care varies quite a bit depending on the type of care required. In cities such as Rocklin, this is especially evident in the comparison between assisted living and nursing home care costs. On average, the monthly cost of nursing home care in the city is about $4,000 higher than assisted living. Home care costs are slightly more expensive than assisted living as well, and the cost difference is extreme when factoring in additional expenses that are incurred when living at home, such as rent, food and utilities, which are normally included in the cost of assisted living. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Rocklin
Medicaid in California
In California, the state’s Medicaid Managed Care program is called Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal is available to low-income Rocklin residents such as seniors, children, disabled persons and pregnant women. Participants of Medi-Cal programs may receive financial assistance or access a variety of health-related services, including medical care, dental care, prescription medications, long-term care, counseling services or nonemergency transportation. The state of California funds Medi-Cal in partnership with the federal government. In order to receive financial help with the cost of assisted living, seniors must apply under one of two programs: the Assisted Living Waiver or the Multipurpose Senior Services Program.
To be eligible for either of these programs, seniors must submit to a full health care assessment and need daily care and support services. Financially, individual applicants may not have a monthly income that exceeds $1,242 or assets valued at more than $2,000. Couples who apply together may not have an income that exceeds $1,682 or have assets valued at more than $3,000.
Assisted Living Waiver
The Assisted Living Waiver is available to seniors who reside in an assisted living facility. It provides financial assistance with the cost of assisted living care and access to support services such as nonmedical transportation, nurse visits, senior companion services and medical and dental care. While this program does cover the cost of care in assisted living facilities, it does not include room and board. Therefore, seniors are responsible for seeking out alternative programs for these expenses or paying out of their own pocket.
To apply for the Assisted Living Waiver, seniors can contact Guidant Care Management (877) 919-0539 or visit any Care Coordinator Agency in the Sacramento area.
Multipurpose Senior Services Program
The Multipurpose Senior Services Program provides support to seniors who live in assisted living facilities or at home yet require nursing care. Its purpose is to lighten the load on the Medi-Cal system by reducing the number of seniors who need assistance with the cost of nursing home care, which is substantially more expensive than assisted living or home care in California.
Seniors who participate in the MSSP are assessed regularly to determine their level of need and are provided with services as required. Some of the assistance provided as part of this program includes nurse visits, occupational therapy, physical therapy, case management, nonmedical transportation and respite care.
The MSSP program is open to all eligible residents of California and only accepts 12,000 participants at one time, which results in a waiting list that can get lengthy at times. As such, seniors are typically asked to reapply on an annual basis.
To learn more about the application process, seniors can contact the California Department of Health Care Services at (707) 565-4700.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
State Supplemental Payment
California’s State Supplemental Payment is available to low-income seniors who receive the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit. The SSP helps those who reside in long-term care facilities pay for room-and-board costs. The monthly payment is based on the senior’s income and needs and is paid out at a maximum of $160.72.
The financial eligibility requirements for the SSP change frequently. To learn more about these requirements or to apply for the benefits, seniors should contact their local Social Security office by calling (800) 772-1213.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services provides bridge loans to seniors who need assistance paying for the cost of long-term care. Bridge loans are paid directly to the senior’s assisted living facility and can be paid back in monthly installments by the senior and their cosigners.
Eligibility depends on credit and income, but seniors who don’t qualify on their own can apply with up to six cosigners to increase the likelihood of approval. Seniors can apply online or by calling (888) 228-4500.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance policies can help seniors pay for the cost of assisted living or other long-term care. These policies typically need to be purchased while the policyholder is still in good health and before the need for long-term care exists. Eligibility, as well as monthly premiums and deductibles, vary depending on the plan and the provider.
