I have used them. I'm disappointed in the service that I got overall. They don't train the staff, sometimes they don't show up. Sometimes they come, sometimes they don't, and nobody calls and they don't have replacements. I wish they would really say what they have to offer because they say a lot of things but they don't offer them. They don't have training nor the proper staff. I would suggest they train their staff and pay them more, plus give commitments.

This facility has changed ownership four times since my Mother\'s arrival in 2009. When she moved in the staff was adequate; the grounds were beautifully kept and there was a lot of attention to detail. Her rent at move-in was $2500.00 a month with all-day dining (beautiful meals), housekeeping and laundry service. Dining hours are now limited; there is no more all-day dining. That left with the second owner. Fast forward to 2019. We are now on our fourth owner. Her rent is now $4,000.00 a month and they are raising it by $200.00 on the 1st of the year. There is a large vacancy at this facility now. They are replacing carpet and painting the empty apartments to justify the $4200.00 a month. The problem is, my Mother has been there 10 years and the only thing that has been replaced in her apartment was the refrigerator because it died. The capper was seeing corn dogs and tater tots on the menu for dinner the other night. The price of hot dogs has skyrocketed I guess. The food is abominable and these folks don\'t seem to care much about people who deserve respect and care for the money they\'re asking. .. It has really declined. /;

My dad moved into Vacaville Retirement Community - Happy Living by Cogir independent living. They're very friendly and accommodating. They're in the process of remodelling all of the apartments so everything is being upgraded. The dining room is well-tended and my dad compliments the food a lot. My dad is in a fully upgraded studio with a small kitchenette. They've got three meals a day from 11 to 7. They've got a full calendar of activities, transportation, and activity room. It seems like everybody is active and likes where they are. There is a library and lots of really nice sitting areas. The staff is excellent, very friendly, personable, make an effort to get to know the people, and very accommodating. They complete requests within the same day, not the next day.

If you love your family member keep looking. Here are some of the issues in less than two and half months of my mother living there. *First night in respite care, as they sat my mom on bed, it collapsed. They hadn\'t connected the frame. *They never cleaned the patio--so many spider webs, she had large spider in bed. *Employee did not close catheter bag, and it leaked all over carpet all night. They had nothing to help absorb it and had housekeeping vacuum. Odor was terrible *after complaints they shampooed carpet making it so wet, she slipped. *final straw was a cockroach in her ear. When one employee went to take picture of it another stopped her. What are they hiding?

We visited Brookdale Vacaville Leisure Town. We liked it, but my parents are going to live with my sister. I liked the apartments. They looked spacious, very clean, and well maintained. There were people sitting in social rooms talking, but we didn't see any activities. We saw the dining room, and it looked nice, and the food looked good, but we didn't eat anything. I talked to one person and she was fine. Everything was very well maintained. It was in a nice area with lots of trees.

My visit with Paramount House Senior Living was very nice. Their dining room menu seemed to be good. The personnel were really upbeat and interested in who we were. We saw a one-bedroom and it was adequate. It had a nice window that looked outside in the back and had a hummingbird feeder . They play games daily like bingo, and they have somebody who comes in and sings with them and plays the piano. The staff was very efficient, very nice, and concerned about what our concerns were. They were really good.

Brookdale Vacaville Leisure Town is fairly clean and nice. The furniture is somewhat dated. It has a little bit of Victorian atmosphere to it, which is nice. The courtyard is nice. The food is mundane. It has a lot of preservatives in it. They say that they will take up food to the residents if they're having a difficult time coming down to the cafeteria, but sometimes they don't get up there for an hour or an hour and a half and by the time they do, it's cold. Sometimes they don't put back all the clothes that they take out to have them laundered, and sometimes other people's clothes get in there as well. They don't clean off anything that has medications or appliances. The person or the family has to clean all that off. The bathroom is only cleaned lightly. They don't do a really good job cleaning the stalls and the sinks. They don't do a good job in the kitchen. They do vacuum, but it's very lightly. We asked how much it would cost to have somebody come in and help her with her medications and they said they would do a flat $500 a month. They're not very helpful to the people who live there. You have to pay a much higher price to get satisfactory care from them.

My relatives are in Brookdale Vacaville Leisure Town. It's a very nice place and they're thrilled. The food is good and they're very happy with the facility. They have one of the larger 1-bedrooms with living room apartments. The laundry is very near, they have their own cable, and we've ordered the extended cable for the room. It's also not too far from the dining area. The community is full of very friendly people. My sister-in-law -- who's very outgoing -- probably knows everybody in the place by now. They also like the fact that the staff comes in and cleans their room once a week. The staff that I met was nice, they've been very helpful, and I haven't met anybody I didn't like. There's a lot of activities available, and if you don't want to participate, then you don't have to. The pricing is pretty good for everything that they are getting.

Brookdale Vacaville was beautiful, clean, and the staff was wonderful. My aunt will be living there, and we think it's a great community. The rooms were very nice; we saw one that we liked and signed up that day. The residents looked happy, greeted each other warmly, and looked to be in good spirits. I thought everything was quite good.

Care Cost Comparison
Senior care costs depend on many factors, ranging from location to the number of service hours. The type of care needed is usually the determining factor, however, and this trend holds true in Vacaville. In this Northern California city, nursing home care is by far the most expensive, exceeding all other care types by thousands of dollars. Homemaker ($4,767) and home health aide ($4,957) services are slightly pricier than assisted living ($4,473), while adult day health care ($1,733) is the most affordable by far. When budgeting for long-term care, seniors should consider the additional expenses of living at home. Residential facility fees usually cover utilities, upkeep, food and other such expenses, while homemaker and home health aides services don’t.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Vacaville
Medicaid in California
Medi-Cal is the California Medicaid program that provides affordable health care services to low-income individuals and families. If seniors are deemed eligible, they’ll gain access to a core set of health benefits, which include hospital care, doctor visits and nursing home care. All Medi-Cal health plans must offer essential health benefits, such as outpatient, emergency, laboratory and preventive services, as well as physical therapy and prescription drugs. Seniors with Medi-Cal coverage also receive dental and mental health/substance use disorder services.
To qualify for Medi-Cal, seniors must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of California. They must also meet the program’s income limit, which is currently 138% of the federal poverty level or:
- $16,395 annually for individuals
- $22,108 annually for couples
Vacaville seniors already enrolled in other benefits programs, such as CalFresh, SSI/SSP or CalWorks, are automatically eligible for Medi-Cal. Seniors who don’t meet the income requirements may still qualify using a share of cost. The share amount is calculated based on an individual’s excess income, and it must be spent on medical bills before receiving Medi-Cal coverage.
Seniors can apply to Medi-Cal in person or online at CoveredCA or by calling (800) 300-1506. They can also complete a single streamlined application to apply by mail.
Assisted Living Waiver
Medi-Cal doesn’t cover the cost of assisted living, but the Assisted Living waiver that’s available in 15 California counties may provide some financial aid. This Home and Community-Based Services waiver helps California seniors transition to a community homelike setting, such as an assisted living facility. Although Solano County doesn’t offer the waiver, Vacaville seniors willing to move to a facility in a participating county can still apply.
To qualify, seniors must:
- Be eligible for Medi-Cal without any share of cost
- Demonstrate the ability to live safely in an assisted living facility
- Be assessed with health care needs commensurate with nursing home levels of care
To apply for the waiver, seniors should contact a local Care Coordination Agency to schedule an assessment.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
State Supplementary Payment
Seniors can use the State Supplementary Payment for the Aged, Blind and Disabled to help pay for room and board in an assisted living facility. SSP provides an added benefit amount to qualified senior’s monthly federal Supplemental Security Income payment.
Seniors have to meet the qualifications for SSI to receive the SSP payment and must:
- Apply to all benefits programs for which they are eligible
- Have little income
- Own property with a total value less than $2,000 (individuals) or $3,000 (couples)
If seniors qualify for SSP, they’ll receive financial assistance in accordance with their medical needs. Currently, the benefit amount for seniors living in a nonmedical care facility is $709 per month.
To learn more about SSP, Vacaville seniors should get in touch with the Vacaville Office of Health and Social Services by calling (707) 553-5000.
VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound Pensions
Vacaville veterans may be eligible for the Aid and Attendance and Housebound pensions. These programs provide eligible veterans with benefits in addition to their standard monthly pension, which can be used to fund the cost of assisted living. Veterans can only receive a pension top-up from one of the programs, and those already receiving VA disability pensions are excluded.
To receive the Aid and Attendance pension, seniors must meet at least one of these prerequisites:
- Have corrected vision of 5/200 or less in both eyes
- Currently reside in a nursing home due to incapacity (mental or physical)
- Are bedridden due to one or more disabilities
- Require the assistance of an aide to complete basic daily functions, such as dressing, eating and bathing
To receive the Housebound pension, veterans must be effectively confined to their home because of a permanent disability.
Vacaville veterans can apply to either pension program by contacting the Solano County Veteran Services Office at (707) 784-6590.
