The apartments are lovely, spacious and well and they even have 2BDRM units. Food is great...homemade soup from scratch every day and the care staff really knows the residents and provide great care for them.

Communication is very much a problem. Took almost 2 years before anyone addressed a care plan. At first care conference they gave 14 days only to have a 30 day discharge on very sparse reasoning that you can't contest. Didn't feel there was effort put into the support. The solution wasn't to try and resolve and support, it was to move to increased care.

The staff at The Courtyard at Lakewood seemed friendly, but the rooms were small. They were between 800 and 900 square feet, and we're looking for something a little bit larger for independent living. They offer exercise classes.

Meridian Lakewood is a full facility where you go from independent all the way up to totally dependent living. It was one of the nicest facilities I visited. The people were very accommodating and cordial to me. Price wise, it wasn't going to work, and I did not like the fact that the particular unit the staff showed me did not have any balcony. You're kind of in a 500 square foot box there. The staff was very informative and gave me all the full details of everything they did and how things work, which I appreciated. They gave me a pie to take home and it was very good. They were doing some construction there, so it was a little hard to get into.

My dad seems to like Lakeview Senior Living. It seems like a lot of money, but he is happy there. He seems quite happy with the food too. They have puzzles, game nights, and they take them around town. They provide three meals a day. They also offer shuttle rides to his doctors' appointments and to the grocery store.

I'm living at Lakeview Senior Living. It's average. They have a van that occasionally goes on little excursion, to certain stores, and to the banks. There were a couple of nasty women here. They have substitute staff on the weekends, and they don't have a TV room. They have a place for bingo and games, but when the people are noisy, it interferes with the activities going on where the TV set is located. It isn't built for older people.

I had lunch at The Courtyard at Lakewood, and the food was good. The people were very nice and the residents seem to be agreeable. The layout of the place was satisfactory. It's a big building and not really impressive.

Lakeview Senior Living is very crowded and there were so many people sharing one elevator for three floors. People with wheelchairs and walkers have to wait to get down to the dining area. It was not right for a senior. The rooms were OK, but small and downsized. The dining area was very elegant and nice. The place was clean and the person who showed us around was very nice and accommodating.

My parents are at The Courtyard At Lakewood. It's a great location off the main road but easy to get to. The staff has been very accommodating. My parents seem to be doing fine. The rooms are bigger than a lot of other places we looked. My parents are in a one-bedroom that has a small full kitchen and a balcony. When you move in, you get a new refrigerator, a new stove, and a new carpet, and they painted the whole place. The people were very friendly and helpful when we moved in. They really take care of you.
The average monthly cost of assisted living care in the U.S. is $4,000, according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, and the Colorado average is the same. At $4,700 per month, Lakewood’s assisted living cost is high in comparison. The only Colorado cities with more expensive rates are Colorado Springs ($4,875) and Boulder ($5,000).
Grand Junction has the state’s most affordable assisted living at a cost of just $3,350 per month. Seniors in Greeley ($3,670) and Pueblo ($4,000) also enjoy lower prices than their counterparts in Lakewood.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Lakewood, so data for Denver was used.

Location isn’t the only factor that influences the cost of senior care. The type of care needed also affects monthly costs. Seniors pay an average of $4,700 per month for assisted living, which is about three times the cost of adult day health services ($1,625). Those who need nursing home care pay $8,365 per month, which is about 80% more than the cost of assisted living. Homemaker ($4,767) and home health aide services ($5,243) are priced similarly to assisted living. Seniors should remember that these prices only include the cost of in-home care itself. Regular household expenses, such as utilities and groceries, are still the senior’s responsibility. Assisted living residences usually include these costs in their monthly fees, so seniors may find they’re a more budget-friendly option.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides medical coverage to low-income Americans. More than 1.2 million people are enrolled in Colorado’s Medicaid program, Health First Colorado, including children, pregnant women, seniors and people with disabilities.
Eligible Coloradans receive many medically necessary services through Health First Colorado including:
Optional State Supplementation
The federal Supplemental Security Income program provides monthly benefits to elderly people with low incomes and few assets. Across the country, more than eight million people collect SSI benefits. Colorado is one of the many states that provides top-up funding to SSI recipients who live in assisted living facilities.
Colorado’s Optional State Supplementation program provides up to $551 per month to single seniors and $1,489 to couples who qualify.
To learn more about the program or to apply, call the Colorado Department of Human Services at (303) 866-5700.
Colorado Old Age Pension
The state of Colorado provides financial assistance to low-income seniors through its Old Age Pension program. To receive this benefit, Colorado seniors must be U.S. citizens or qualified legal residents and earn less than $771 per month. Applicants are also limited to $2,000 in total resources ($3,000 for couples).
Lakewood seniors interested in the OAP program can apply by calling the Jefferson County DHS department at (303) 271-1388. Applicants are interviewed by an intake program specialist who then makes an eligibility determination.
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Some Lakewood seniors may only need short-term help paying for assisted living. Seniors waiting for a pension to kick in or a home to sell may find themselves in this situation. An assisted living bridge loan can help seniors handle this gap in funding.
Bridge loans usually have a line of credit structure, which allows approved seniors to borrow only what they need. Monthly payments for housing and care can be sent directly to a senior’s assisted living facility. Applications can list up six borrowers to help a senior qualify, but applicants will need to explain their planned source of long-term funding.
To apply for a bridge loan, call Elderlife Financial at (888) 228-4500 or complete an online application.
Lakewood residents 55 years of age or older can find an array of programs and activities available at the local senior center. Seniors can join one of the many arts and crafts or group fitness classes offered, enjoy a nutritious hot meal, receive health and wellness counseling or take part in trips and planned outings.
