Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Dade City

Medicaid in Florida

Florida’s Medicaid system helps low-income individuals and families access free health care. Medicaid is primarily accessed by children, pregnant women, disabled persons and senior citizens. Some of the services covered by the state plan include primary care, ambulatory and inpatient hospital services, eye care, dental care and prescription medications.

Medicaid eligibility in Florida is determined by one of two agencies: the Social Security Administration or the Florida Department of Children and Families. While the SSA is responsible for working with beneficiaries who receive Supplemental Security Income, the Department of Children and Families administers the plan for those who aren’t SSI eligible. Qualification for the state plan is determined primarily by income. Seniors aged 65 and older who are applying alone must have a maximum income of $891 per month and no more than $2,000 in countable assets. Married couples are allowed a maximum income of $1,208 and up to $3,000 in countable assets. Exemptions include the applicant’s home, provided one spouse continues to live in it, as well as their vehicle and personal belongings.

Seniors living in Dade City can apply online for Medicaid or contact ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237 for more information.

Medicaid Managed Long-Term Care Program

Seniors who live in assisted living facilities can access Medicaid coverage through the state’s Medicaid Managed Long-Term Care program. The program specifically helps senior citizens and disabled persons access long-term care services that aren’t covered by the state plan, including assisted living programs. Covered services are determined by the beneficiary’s case manager, which may include physical therapy, speech therapy, skilled nursing care and transportation.

To qualify for this program, applicants must be 65 years of age or older or legally disabled and have an income of $2,313 or less with no more than $2,000 in assets ($3,000 for couples). All applicants must undergo the Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services which is administered by the Department of Elder Affairs. The assessment must determine that the applicant is eligible for a nursing home level of care.

To learn more about the program or to apply for coverage, seniors can contact the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplement

Seniors who receive SSI payments from the federal government may be eligible for Florida’s Optional State Supplement, which is paid to its beneficiaries on a monthly basis along with their SSI payment. The amount of the benefit is determined by the recipient’s living situation and their income. In Florida, it may be as high as $78.40 per month.

To qualify for the OSS, applicants must be 65 years of age or older or legally disabled. They must have a maximum income of $752.40 per month and no more than $2,000 in countable assets or no more than $3,000 in countable assets for married couples.

To apply for the OSS, seniors can contact ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

Seniors who are unable to afford the upfront cost of assisted living services may be eligible for a bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. When a senior is approved for a bridge loan, the funds are paid directly to their assisted living facility. The senior then has to pay these funds back to Elderlife in monthly installments. While these loans are a great option for seniors who need immediate financial assistance, it’s important to remember that they’re a temporary solution.

Eligibility is dependent upon the applicant’s credit history and income. Those who are unable to qualify on their own may include up to six cosigners on their application.

To apply for a bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services, seniors can contact the company at (888) 228-4500.
