I visited the Grand Villa of Englewood. It's nice, the people were nice, and the facility was nice. They showed me a 1-bedroom and a studio, and they actually had one smaller than a studio. They had all kinds of activities, and they had a swimming pool and all kinds of stuff like a game room and a TV room. They told me they had three meals a day, but I didn't see the food.

My mom moved into Grand Villa of Englewood assisted living and she just absolutely loves it. What they do there that I think is better than a lot of other communities is that the people who need more assistance, like the people in memory care, have their own dining room, their own wing, and they have things segregated. The people that are independent or assisted are all in one area and they share the dining room. It's just a better situation. They have an activity director whom I hope they'd keep because she's just very vibrant and tries to pull people who are a little apprehensive or shy out of their shell and get them involved. The meals are good. They have a pavilion and bistro area for coffee. The residents also have little pods that they wear around their neck that they can use if they need assistance. They also have pull chains in the bathroom and bedroom for the nurse to come. People don't pay the same price as it's based on the rooms. If you're in a studio and need lesser care, its a lesser price. As the need goes up, the price goes up. They work with a physician staff and they come in periodically so I don't have to pick my mom up and take her to the doctor and take her back. They also will take them to Walmart or to a doctor's appointment if it's in the local vicinity. They also have LPNs on site.

I like that Grand Villa of Englewood has a swimming pool. They give you a break on the cost for the first year, which is nice. The layout of the rooms there are about the same as his current community. They have more rooms on the ground floor, which I like. I would have loved to have my relative on the ground floor, but they seemed to think he'd fit in with the people on the second floor. They have a lot of nice things, like church services. However, my relative doesn't know how to look at the calendar. They also have bingo, and lots of activities for residents who are able to or want to join in. He enjoys meal time because he can talk to the other residents. I would rate them a four because it's an older community, and that makes a difference. As far as the staff, I only met the gentleman who showed me the rooms there.

We chose Grand Villa of Englewood for my step-father. It's a beautiful community. My mother didn't want to look anywhere else when she saw that place. They have a lot of good activities there, like they take them on trips to Walmart if they want to go, and they have movie nights, singing, Bible studies and a lot of things going on if people want to do it. The food is great, with big services and a lot of food. He seems very happy. He had a good-sized room with a beautiful bathroom. I guess the only downside is the cost.

The rooms at Grand Villa are better. I have an average room, but I could have more closet space. The shower doesn't have a very good handicapped stall. I had a boyfriend with me, and he went to use the shower, and he fell. They had to take him to the hospital because he couldn't get up. It was really bad; that part I didn't like. As far as the people, most of them are nice. I like the pool, and I like the daytime exercise that they have. They have a few more activities like pizza parties every once in a while, birthday parties once a month, movies on Saturdays and Sundays, and trips every week to Wal-Mart. That part was not bad. The food was a little bit better too. I like the way that the buildings are laid out because it's more open. The room is a little small but it's OK.

My mother is living in Grand Villa of Englewood. She was in assisted living before they transferred her to memory care. It's a very nice facility, well-kept, better than other facilities, but the value is reasonable. There's a high turnover of staff, and they're understaffed, but the people there are doing the best they can. They did not have any activity for Mother's Day.

I live at Grand Villa of Englewood. Everybody here is so friendly and helpful, and if you need anything, they're right there to help. They have lots of activities which I enjoy, and they have a swimming pool, which I enjoy in the summer. The facilities are good, clean, and well taken care of.

Grand Villa of Englewood is family-owned; it's like a little community with very good service. Everyone is very caring and seems to love their job. My aunt is very picky, but she loves the food there and thinks it's really good. The place is also very clean and there are lots of activities. I'm very happy with them.

I have been to Grand Villa of Englewood several times. It has a pool, and the units open to green spaces. I ate a good lunch there. The dining area is not large, but it's very homey. I saw people working on jigsaw puzzles. They have an activities room where they show movies and have tea dances.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Englewood
Medicaid in Florida
Medicaid programs help low-income individuals and families access healthcare services, medical equipment and prescription medications that they may be unable to afford without assistance. In Florida, the Florida Department of Children and Families with support from the Social Security Administration administers Medicaid. Each agency is responsible for determining eligibility for certain individuals: the Department of Children and Families qualifies children, disabled individuals, pregnant women and seniors, while the Social Security Administration works exclusively with Supplemental Security Income recipients.
Seniors who require financial assistance with the cost of assisted living may be able to receive aid from Florida’s Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program, which covers the cost of services provided in assisted living facilities. It also allows low-income seniors to access health care services including doctor visits, dental care, hospital services, physical therapy, occupational therapy and nonemergency transportation. This program has an enrollment cap, so there is typically a long wait for those wanting to participate.
To qualify for Medicaid programs in Florida, individual applicants must have an income that doesn’t exceed $16,040 annually, and couples may not earn more than $21,599 per year. Assets may not be valued higher than $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples. Exempt assets include the applicant’s home and household furnishings and a single vehicle.
Seniors can learn more about the application process and waiting times by contacting the Florida Department of Elder Affairs at (800) 963-5337.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Optional State Supplementation
Some low-income seniors in Englewood and throughout Florida may be eligible to receive cash benefits from the state’s Optional State Supplementation program. The OSS is for seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income, and it offers additional financial aid to those who may be unable to afford the cost of room and board in long-term care facilities. OSS benefits are only available to individuals who are legally disabled or aged 65 or older and receiving long-term care. The benefit amount is calculated based on the applicant’s income and living situation. The maximum payout is $78.40 per month.
To be eligible for OSS, seniors must be recipients of the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit, and their income may not exceed $849.40 per month. They also may not own assets valued at more than $2,000 in total.
Seniors who wish to apply for this benefit can contact ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services provides seniors with bridge loans to assist them in paying for long-term care in assisted living and nursing care facilities while they await permanent funding. Funds are paid directly to the senior’s place of residence, and the senior, along with their cosigners, can repay the loan in monthly installments. Elderlife bridge loans are available at low interest rates and flexible terms.
To qualify for an Elderlife loan, seniors should have a good credit history and enough income to make monthly payments on their loan. Those who can’t obtain approval on their own may apply with up to six cosigners, which, in most cases, can increase the likelihood of approval. Seniors can learn more about Elderlife Financial Services or open an application by calling (888) 228-4500.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Some seniors may have a long-term care insurance policy, and those who do can have most of the cost of assisted living covered by their insurance provider. Depending on the policy and provider, there may be a copay or a deductible that the senior must pay out of pocket before their provider reimburses their costs. Eligibility, deductibles, copay amounts and premiums vary depending on the provider and the coverage purchased, but typically, long-term care insurance providers won’t sell policies to those in poor health or already residing in long-term care facilities.
