When the time comes, I think we will pick here for my husband. The tour was done wonderfully. The lady was very informed and very friendly. We met all their Covid restrictions, and they were very thorough in doing that. We looked at two apartments, and we felt that the deluxe room would be adequate for us. It was very clean. We were able to see the dining room and the workout rooms. We saw, from a distance, the library and we were able to see quite a bit, and we're very pleased. They showed us what we asked. They told us that they would be able to take him to doctor's appointments. They used to be able to bring them to stores, but now they just have them give the list and they will get it for them. We saw the pool table. They had a lot of activities like bingo and different exercises that he could join. There was quite a bit that they shared.

My husband was in Bear Creek Nursing Center for short-term care. There were many times when we rang for service for some kind or other, and it took quite a while to get a response. During the night, it's especially hard. There was one night he was sleep-walking, and when he wasn't supposed to be out of the bed; he was out in the hallway. The nurses were in the little area there chatting, they told him to go back to bed. The one remark he made was never to put him in a nursing home again. But the food was good, he likes the food there. The therapy was minimal, but there was not much therapy that could be done. The place was mostly clean, although sometimes there were a couple of things on the floor, but mostly it's okay.

My mother has been a resident for a while now. She just loves the staff there, although there have been changes. The food isn't as good as when she first moved there, but everything else, including the staff, is still caring. So that's the important thing. The quality of the food has gone down, but I don't know what the reason is. They have a bus to take the residents wherever they want to go, doctors' appointments, shopping, you name it. They also offer a lot of activities for the residents.

It was a nice place and seemed lively. They just had one big dining room, which was nice. It had nice apartments, but it wasn't near where we wanted it to be. The staff was nice. They fed us, and the food was good. They had a schedule of activities available. They answered all our questions. The rooms looked nice, didn't look in disrepair, and were big enough. They had one- and two-bedroom apartments.

It was a pretty good place. It's more for people with dementia, but I'm not at that stage in life yet. They didn't have balconies, but the place looks very nice. They fed me, were very pleasant and nice, and gave me little gifts of little knick knacks and cakes. Their rooms were an OK size but they didn't have a lot of storage space, which is a problem because I'm taking four boxes of memorabilia with me. The dining room is very nice and beautiful, like a high-class restaurant. The building is at least three stories high. The only room that I like is right next to the swimming pool.

We selected here, but it wasn't for us, so we went back home. It was brand new and wonderful. The food was good, and the people were wonderful. They had an exercise room, a swimming pool, and a salon to do your hair and your nails. The staff was very friendly and very nice. It was too much walking for us. We had a dog and had to go down to walk the dog, which was too taxing for us. We loved the place.

It was very nice here. It was big, very airy, and cozy. It's wonderful and perfect. I love it. They gave me two bakery boxes with cookies and they're wonderful. They're really good. Their activities are cards, Bingo, crafts, movies, and entertainment. They also have a hairdresser and a small general store. They have everything that somebody would want and need.

We moved in to the independent living unit, but we can do assisted living and stay in the same apartment. The apartment is beautiful, delightful, and exactly what I needed. They have a full schedule, and each day they've got a half dozen events. Everyone I've met so far has been very friendly and helpful. The food is delicious, I've cleaned up the plate every time I go to dinner. They've got a game room, meeting rooms, a library, and just about anything you want.
Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study looked at senior care costs in thousands of areas across the country. The study shows the average monthly assisted living costs in Hudson are lower than the state ($3,500) and national ($4,000) averages.
When compared to other areas along Florida’s west coast, prices for assisted living are higher in Punta Gorda ($3,400), North Port ($3,874) and Cape Coral ($4,000), while prices are lower to the east of Hudson in Lakeland ($2,808).
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Hudson, so data for the closest city, Tampa, was used.

The wide price range for senior care reflects the major differences in the type of care and number of hours of service provided each week. Adult day health care services are the least expensive senior care option since care is provided in a group setting for six to eight hours on weekdays only. By comparison, nursing home care costs more than double what all other types of senior care do in Hudson because it provides seniors with around-the-clock skilled nursing care in a licensed residential setting. In Hudson, 44 hours of weekly homemaker or home health aide service costs more than assisted living, and unlike assisted living, in-home senior care prices don’t include ongoing household expenses such as HOA fees, home maintenance, utilities and groceries.

Approximately 3,280,000 low-income Florida residents receive free health care coverage through Medicaid, the nationwide health insurance program for Americans who would otherwise be left without access to health care. Funding for Medicaid is provided by the federal and state governments, and nearly two-thirds of Florida’s Medicaid expenditures go towards services for seniors and the disabled.
Medicaid eligibility is based on the income and countable assets of each applicant. Florida seniors who already receive Supplemental Security Income benefits are prequalified for Medicaid, and they only need to complete an additional Medicaid screening if they require Medicaid funding for long-term residential care services.
Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program
Low-income seniors age 65 and older who require the type of care that’s normally provided in a nursing home may be eligible to receive additional care services and support within an assisted living setting through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program.
In order to qualify for long-term care services under the SMMC LTC, seniors must earn under $2,313 per month when applying as an individual or under $4,626 per month when applying with a spouse. This income limit is set at three times the SSI monthly limit and is subject to change annually.
Medicaid asset limits are $2,000 per individual and $3,000 for a couple. Countable assets include the cash value of any life insurance policies worth $1,500 or more, stocks and bonds, cash and any real estate other than the applicant’s principal residence.
Assets that aren’t counted towards the Medicaid asset limits include the home of the applicant or applicants valued at up to $585,000, irrevocable prepaid burial contracts, personal belongings and one vehicle.
In accordance with federal law, seniors who meet the financial requirements for the SMMC LTC must also be assessed by a registered nurse or designated assessor through the Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Program.
To request a CARES assessment, seniors need to apply to the Institutional Care Program. The assessment is reviewed by a physician or registered nurse to determine the least restrictive placement that meets the applicant’s medical needs. Seniors accepted into the SMMC LTC may be provided with one or more of the following services within an assisted living environment:
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Seniors who need access to cash to finance a move into assisted living or pay out-of-pocket assisted living costs while waiting for their benefits to become available may qualify for an assisted living bridge loan from Elderlife Financial.
Available in terms up to 12 months with interest-only monthly payments and structured as a line of credit, seniors can apply for a bridge loan online or over the phone. There are no application fees, and credit approval usually occurs in less than 24 hours for qualified borrowers.
Funds from the loan are sent directly to the assisted living facility each month, and interest is only charged on the amount drawn from the loan. There’s no prepayment penalty, and borrowers can pay off and close the loan at any time.
To learn more, contact Elderlife Financial Lending at (888) 228-4500.
Optional State Supplementation
Florida seniors who live in an assisted living facility and receive SSI benefits are eligible for additional funding towards their room and board costs through the Florida Optional State Supplementation program.
This program provides up to $78.40 per month for individuals and up to $156.80 per couple in SSI top-up funding.
For more information, contact the U.S. Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
