Reviews of Assisted Living Facilities in New Port Richey

I visited this facility

I went to Grand Villa of New Port Richey. I did not see anything that was off-putting. It was clean, I saw many of the residents, and they all looked happy and busy. I talked to one resident outside, and she said, "Oh, I'm happy here. But I know if you ask eighteen people, you get eighteen different answers," which is true. I really liked their single room. They had really nice furniture that they would use instead of having to either go buy some or bring your furniture from home. The people I saw working there didn't look angry. Everybody was pleasant, and if everybody is pleasant, then they can't be hating their jobs. The staff was very nice. She had an answer to everything I asked. Their dining areas were beautiful. I have no idea about the food because no one was eating. They had a lot of activities, but I know my husband wouldn't be interested in them. They had a barber shop, a beauty shop, and a therapy room with lots of machines. I was trying to look at things through my husband's eyes. They had a room for everybody to watch TV together, and they have Wi-Fi there. They could have had more outside space, but I didn't see any dirt anywhere. Everything looked nice.

I visited this facility

I visited both assisted living and memory care at Brookdale New Port Richey. It's older than the other place we visited. It had three buildings, they're very long, and they have outside space between each building. The hallways were very long, which is OK except if you were in a wheelchair, in which case it might be harder for you to make it to the big dining area. I was looking at it through my husband's eyes, and I thought this would be very hard for him. He would be too tired by the time he got there, and that was a minus for me, although there was nothing wrong with it. I didn't see people in the hallways begging for help. I liked that it was pet friendly; they could have small pets. It was nice that there was a lot of outdoor areas that the residents could go to. They had a rehab place and two big dining rooms. It had a lot more residents than the other one, so you would need two dining rooms. The staff was very nice and very helpful. You would have to bring your own furniture there, which was a minus for me because I would have to break up my bedroom set, and I didn't want to do that. They had activity rooms, but I didn't go into them. I have emphysema and after walking that one long building, I was really too tired to go to any others. It was a long way. It looked very clean to me, but I had trouble with the layout, and that's probably because of my deficiencies; it's too far. If you had a room on the other end of it, it's a long way. That might be good for other people because it would keep them in shape, but for me it ran me out of oxygen.

We're in the process of moving stuff into Brookdale New Port Richey, and Mom has the room. We were there in person. They provide three meals a day, but she does have a refrigerator and a microwave in her room. She's on the first floor, and she doesn't have far to walk to go to the dining room or the activity room. It's all on the first floor. They have an RN and six LPNs on duty, they have a house doctor, and different days of the week they have the staff come in. It looked nice, very well-kept, and not beat up.

I am/was a resident of this facility

Orchard Ridge has extended care parts and I'm in the nursing care part. They were always so accommodating, plus they do everything they do to help things go well for me. They have good food and the people are kind. The only thing I know is that I have a colostomy and urostomy, and sometimes I have trouble getting the right supply, but it's not something I would get on them about. They brought me games to play on paper.

I am a current client of this provider

We have the caregivers from Right at Home West Pasco overnight. So I can get some sleep and they can keep an eye on my husband in case he gets up and needs help. The caregivers are prompt. The communication between us and the agency is normal, they would call to see how everything is going and I have a number if I need to call them. I feel perfectly comfortable. They're reliable and took good care of my husband, and I can sleep.

I visited this facility

We loved Brookdale New Port Richey assisted living. The facility was great and the rooms were fabulous and big. Because it's assisted living, it’s a little more money, but the rooms are nicer and bigger. The laminate flooring looked like a pretty wood flooring. They had availability of all three room sizes so you have a choice. The rooms were extremely spacious, very current in their style, and the flooring and walls were pretty modern. The one-bedroom had walls, and the bedroom obviously was off to the side, and the other two we saw were studios, and one of them had a half wall between the bedroom and the sitting area that would give you some closed off space. You could have a whole bedroom set in the bedroom area, a bed, a chest of drawers, and a dresser. The living room had plenty of room for a sofa, an easy chair, and a sofa table. It was never anything I'd expect for assisted living. The staff was great and the sales director who showed us around was really nice. Along the way, the residents would stop us and say it's a great place to live. I like that they personalize each resident who comes in and provide what is needed and leave them alone when something isn't needed. They had a rule that their nursing staff has to have eyes on every resident for no less than once every five hours. The atmosphere was warm and homey and not like living in a hotel or apartment building. They had three dining rooms and a menu. What's very nice about this place was they had a breakfast menu which you can also use for dinner, a lunch and dinner menu that were available all day long, and then they had lunch and dinner specials. Another thing I like is that the third Thursday of the month is friends and family, so the resident can have family for dinner and they don't have to pay for it. That is a nice thing to do. If family wants to go over and eat lunch or dinner with the residents, it's only $5 which is quite reasonable. They had a chef on staff.

I liked Brookdale New Port Richey. It was clean. The staff during the tour was very nice and very knowledgeable. They had crafts, bingo, and movies. They had a library and exercise equipment. The dining area was very nice, and the rooms looked good.

Brookdale New Port Richey is good. I am impressed with it mostly because you are allowed to bring your pet. They have seats outside where you could sit there and look around. It is also close to places of worship. The person who showed me around was good. She was willing to answer questions, showed us around, and introduced us to a couple of people there. They were friendly. We liked the dining room and had a meal there. The dining room was like a dining room that I would have, but the place was clean and well-kept.

Care Cost Comparison

Senior care prices are based on a variety of factors including the type of care provided, the local cost of living and the number of facilities and services in the area.  In New Port Richey, the most expensive option is nursing home care, which is more than twice the cost of assisted living. This is because nursing homes provide around-the-clock supervision, skilled nursing and additional services such as medication administration, which aren’t generally included with assisted living. In-home services from a homemaker or home health aide are also priced higher than assisted living.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in New Port Richey

Medicaid in Florida

Medicaid, the nationwide health coverage program jointly funded by the federal and state governments, provides basic health care for approximately 90% of seniors and people with disabilities in Florida. Medicaid services for low-income seniors include preventive health screening, primary and emergency care, as well as long-term care in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

Medicaid eligibility is based on income and countable assets. For seniors age 65 and older seeking Medicaid coverage, the maximum allowable monthly income is $2,313 per person (or $4,626 per couple), which is 300% of the current SSI federal benefit rate

Medicaid applicants are also subject to asset limits of $2,000 per individual and $3,000 per couple. Countable assets include cash, bank account balances, stocks, bonds and most real estate. An applicant’s principal residence is exempt if valued at $585,000 or less, along with clothing, jewelry, household furnishings and one vehicle.

Statewide Managed Care, Long-Term Care Waiver

Federal law mandates that Florida seniors who qualify for Medicaid and need the type of care normally offered in a nursing home setting must participate in the Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services screening program.

Seniors who complete CARES screening may be enrolled in the Statewide Managed Care Long-Term Care Program, a Medicaid wavier program designed to prevent nursing home placement by funding enhanced senior care services within an assisted living setting.

Services provided through the SMMC LTC are based on recommendations made by the CARES assessor and contingent upon the medical needs of each senior. SMMC LTC services may include medication administration and management, personal or attendant care, medical supplies and equipment, and/or speech, physical and occupational therapy.

To apply for Florida Medicaid, request a CARES assessment or learn more about the SMMC LTC program, contact the Pasco County Elder Helpline at (800) 861-8111 or ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefits and Housebound Allowance

Veterans Affairs provides additional pension benefits to qualified veterans and survivors who are housebound, have a severe visual impairment or require help to complete daily activities through the Aid and Attendance Benefits and Housebound Allowance

These two VA pension top-up programs are available to qualified applicants who aren’t currently receiving a VA disability pension.

For the Housebound Allowance, applicants must be largely limited to their principal place of residence as a result of a permanent disability.

For Aid and Attendance Benefits, applicants must either live in a nursing home, be bedridden, need help with activities of daily living and/or have vision tested at 5/200 or worse.

Qualifying disabilities don’t have to be related to military service. Note that applicants may only receive benefits through one of these programs, even if they meet the criteria for both.

For more information and application assistance, contact the Pasco County Division of Veterans Services at (727) 834-3282.

Optional State Supplementation

Florida is one of a number of states offering a cash assistance program to top up SSI benefits for seniors 65 and older who reside in assisted living facilities.

The Florida Optional State Supplementation program provides up to $78.40 per month to individual seniors, and up to $156.80 for couples, to use toward the room-and-board portion of assisted living costs.

To learn more about the OSS program, contact the SunCoast Region office of the Florida Department of Children and Families at (813) 558-5500.
