Excellence was a top-star place. We loved it. My sister was there for over a year. I picked a big place on the second floor for her. There was plenty of room for a love seat, a couch, or a TV. It had a beautiful walk-in bathroom and a little kitchenette. The price was less than the other facility, and I have to say everyone was top notch. The room was bigger than a studio, and it had two big windows that overlooked a gazebo where they could go outside and sit. They had barbecues on Fridays before COVID. They kept them all active with things to do. If you called, there was always somebody there who could tell you what was going on. We went there all the time because it was easy. They had a movie room, a computer room, a hairdresser, and a beauty shop right in the place, and they had a doctor. Everything was there. For the price, you won't believe what you get. If we called them, we could go there and have lunch. The day we went there, they didn't expect us, but when we sat down for lunch, they had cheesesteak, and they even ended up with cheesecake for dessert. The place was nice, and they had two big seating rooms downstairs, which were gorgeous. A piano player would come in, and they could go sit down on the couches. Excellence was over the top. They provide meals, they wash their clothes, and they bring them back. They are hung back up, and they aren't left in the hamper. My sister-in-law's clothes were always put back for her. They cleaned every week, everything was spotless, and they kept everything so nice.

My parents are at the Excellence Senior Living - Orlando. I like all the personal care and everything they do for them. They have nothing to worry about. They have good food. The staff are very accommodating. The care is very nice, very excellent. I need to make phone calls for Medicaid because it is pretty expensive. They take my dad to dialysis every day or three times a week.

My mother has been in Brookdale Dr. Phillips for two years now. She has had a really great experience there. It's quiet and it's safe. The director is awesome. She works directly with everybody there to make sure they're comfortable. I have no worries with my mother being there. It's pretty and it's clean, too. The staff is very nice and very helpful. My mother's room is a large studio. Unfortunately, my mother doesn't participate in activities. They offer activities and they have quite a few of them. I tried to get her interested in their arts program and their walking because she loves to walk. They also have movie night and trivia, however, she doesn't want to participate. There are plenty of things offered. There's a salon and a library. Each wing has a living room where they can be alone with their family. They can watch a movie, they can do puzzles, and they can grab a book there. They have exercise classes but they don't have a gym. I haven't been there since March. We're not allowed to be there while they're eating. The price is comparable. I could have put my mother in a cheaper place, but I needed her to be near where I live so that's what made me choose Brookdale in the first place.

We toured Somerby Lake Nona but they don't take Medicaid. The staff who accommodated us was very nice and it's a very nice community, but it's too pricey for my parents. The place was very clean and nice, it wasn't huge but it's spacious and had a big nice dining room. Their dining room was nice although the food was somewhat to be desired. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't have a vacant room to show us at the time. They showed us somebody else's room and it was a little uncomfortable going to it, although the lady who lived there was totally okay with it. It was a beautiful place, although it's not that homey. They have a pool there, an exercise room, rehabilitation, they also take the residents on outings, and they have a doctor that comes in.

The community is warm and friendly. The staff go out of their way to make every day special, they speak and take time to get to know us as friends and show honest concern for our welfare. I enjoy the feeling of family at Somerby.

I love Spring Hills Hunters Creek. My mother has moved in last December. It is actually wonderful. Everyone is taking care of her. There are activities every day. There are lots of painting and singiing. They offer three meals a day, they provide a doctor and hair care, and they clean the room. The staff members are ridiculously wonderful. However, my mother doesn't like their food.

My visit with Brookdale Dr. Phillips was satisfactory. The apartments were fine. They were having someone in entertaining the day I was there and he was singing to the group. The facilities were acceptable. It is convenient if you live in the Southwest Orlando.

I used to be a client of Home Instead. I primarily needed help transferring from one place to another. They also never refused to do what I asked them to do, like small housekeeping. The caregivers were very good, but I was not very happy with the billing. They had a minimum bill for three hours of work and I didn't want to go over that, but sometimes I had to pay for the extra just because their workers clocked out late.

Brookdale was nice, clean, and they were friendly. They have activities like chair exercises and general art projects. The staff was very nice and manageable.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Orlando
Medicaid in Florida
Florida’s state Medicaid Managed Care Long Term Care Program provides eligible seniors with financial assistance for the cost of long-term care, such as assisted living. In addition to funding, participants of this program receive services tailored to their needs, including case management, transportation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and respite care.
To be eligible for Medicaid, applicants must be 65 years of age and meet the financial eligibility requirements, which for an individual in 2019 is $16,040 before taxes per year. Seniors applying for this program are also required to submit to a comprehensive assessment to determine their need for long-term care. There is typically a waiting list for the program. Seniors can inquire about waiting-list status and submit their application by calling 1-800-96-ELDER.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The PACE program is for elderly individuals who require a nursing level of care but prefer to remain in their home. Under the PACE guidelines, seniors may live independently or reside in an assisted living community. PACE provides daily nursing care as well as additional medical and social services at a fraction of the cost of nursing care.
To be eligible, individuals must be age 55 or older and submit to a comprehensive assessment to determine the level of care they require. They must also meet Medicaid financial requirements and be able to live safely within their community. Seniors can find a PACE provider in their area by calling 1-855-435-7223.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Seniors living in Orlando’s assisted living facilities can apply for an elder bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. The company offers low-cost loans to seniors with reasonable monthly payments. These loans help seniors pay for the cost of assisted living and other senior care options and can be paid directly to an assisted living facility.
Eligibility is dependent on credit and income; however, seniors can apply with up to six co-applicants to increase the chance of approval. Applicants must also be residing in or moving into an approved facility.
Optional State Supplement
Seniors who receive Social Security Income can apply for the OSS, which is a cash benefit in addition to monthly SSI payments. The OSS benefit can help to pay the cost of room and board in an assisted living facility. It’s calculated based on the individual’s income, which cannot exceed $849.40 per month and has a maximum payout of $78.40 monthly.
To be eligible, seniors may not exceed monthly income limits and may not possess assets valued at more than $2,000 per individual or $3,000 per couple. To apply, seniors can contact the ACCESS Florida branch of the Florida Department of Children and Families by phoning 1-866-762-2237.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Seniors who have purchased long-term care insurance can use the policy’s benefits to help them pay for the cost of assisted living. Insurance companies such as Genworth Financial, National Guardian Life and Bankers Life provide this type of policy. The price of long-term care insurance varies drastically depending on a number of factors, including the policyholder’s health, the average cost of care and the type of plan purchased.
Eligibility requirements and benefit limitations vary between long-term care insurance providers, but most companies require that a policy be purchased before the policyholder needs long-term care.
