I visited Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens and the tour was very good. The young woman who showed me around was excellent. The place is old, but it is very well-maintained and clean, just not stylish. It looked like it could use some updating, but it was clean and well taken care of. She only had one place to show me and it was one of the places that had not been updated yet. I don't even know if it is going to be updated because there were different price schedules for the apartments. But it was in very good condition and it was very pleasant. They had a fitness center, nice dining room, a library, a meeting room, and a theatre room. The usual amenities. I looked at really luxurious places which were beautiful and it's really hard to compare them to Brookdale, and they realized that also. But what I like about Brookdale was people were walking around. There were people walking their dogs and people talking to each other. The parking lot was full of residents' cars. They also go out to eat. It was much more like a rental apartment building that I would have been in years ago and I like that much more than these luxurious places where nobody was walking around with no noise and no life. Even though it did not have all the grandiose architecture and decorations and interiors, people looked alive there. There were ladies playing cards and guys chatting with each other. It was a nicer feel than I saw in some of other places. I have to admit it surprised me. I am not looking for luxury, I am looking to feel like there is still something to life. People are going out shopping, going out to eat, and going on vacation and Brookdale had that, which was interesting. It was not young people over there, there were some people I saw with walkers, but they were walking. It was in the afternoon and people were walking their dogs and they were coming up and down the elevator and chatting about the Christmas decorations and they felt alive. I know Brookdale has 1100 facilities around the country and they explained to me that if I want to transfer from one to the other there won't be any penalties and there is a good chance that at some point I would want to move out to California.

Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens was very nice. I was very impressed with it. They showed me one-bedroom and two-bedroom, which were very nice. I like the size and the way it was laid out. It was more like someone's house than just a room. It was like an apartment. The staff was very nice and very informative, too.

I stayed at Heartland for rehab and I didn't care for it at all. I didn't like it at all. The rooms were decent but I didnt care for the staff. I didn't like the food at all. They didn't offer any amenities. The location was good though.

We liked Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens. We looked at a spacious three-bedroom. The dining room was nicely appointed and looked like a nice restaurant. There were a host of amenities and activities. There was a full schedule of events, like exercise and cards. They also had a barbershop and a beauty salon. Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens is older but very nice. There were some beautiful trees around it. It is set back in the trees and creates a very favorable impression as you drive in.

Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens was very professional and not just trying to make money out of people. Out of all the places I visited, theyre the only ones in the area that actually cared. They're set up so they have cognitive courses and care about the patients. They showed me around and were very concerned about my mother's well-being. Its not just a nice-looking place but is actually a facility that I feel comfortable having my mother in. The rooms were rather spacious and the staff is professional and they have a lot of medical staff. They have psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors who help. They have organized crafts and it's an environment to try to be social. You can also tell that the residents liked being there.

I visited Brookdale, and it was setup nicely. The people were very nice and it was very clean. I saw a 1-bedroom, and a suite. They were both very spacious, but you need to provide your own furnishings. They have aquacise, jazzercise, the residents go on trips, and they go to ball games. They also take them out to eat. The staff was very helpful, very friendly, and very knowledgeable.

My husband is at Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens right now. It's a beautiful place. He is comfortable in his room. I have him in an apartment where he is surrounded by his personal things even though he would rather be at home. The food that they serve is phenomenal. I have spent many meals there with my husband, and the food is amazing. My husband told me he doesn't know what he's eating, but that it's really good. That says a lot. The memory care unit is a very secure unit. They have to take the residents out to get into any activities going on in the rest of the building. My husband had diarrhea when we first put him in there from a certain medication they were giving to him, so they didn't take him for awhile because they didn't want him to have an accident and get embarassed. I really appreciated that. Now that we have gotten that under control, they have been taking him out on different excursions and getting him involved. They do a very good job. I know they took my husband out once for a movie and out another day for a lunch excursion. The activities director is very active and he has lot of things going on.

The rooms at Palms Edge were average. When you walk in, you'll see their dining room and activity room, and then on both sides are hallways. There are sitting areas outside but it's locked so that Alzheimer's and dementia patients can't get out. They also have a gathering-type room, and overall the place is OK. It's just not in the best location with regards to things like crime. The staff member was also nice and very friendly. They have a pool table, books, a TV room, and different rooms for activities where they group the residents based on capacity. I appreciate this because you wouldn't want the mentally alert to be with the residents with no faculties in them.

The monthly cost of assisted living ($3,350) is less than half of nursing home care ($8,699) in the city. When compared with home care services, the cost of assisted living in Palm Beach Gardens is similar, however, that doesn’t take into account the additional costs related to living at home such as rent/mortgage payments and general upkeep of the home, which are typically included in the cost of assisted living. In Florida and throughout the country, Medicaid is available to low-income families and individuals and provides financial assistance and access to healthcare services. Florida’s Medicaid program is managed jointly by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the Social Security Administration. The DCF is responsible for determining the eligibility of most applicants to the state’s Medicaid program including seniors and disabled persons, while the Social Security Administration qualifies applicants who receive Supplemental Security Income.
Florida’s Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program operates under the state Medicaid program and provides seniors with access to care in assisted living facilities and nursing care homes. In addition to the cost of care, this program covers additional health care costs, including doctor visits, dental care, hospitalization, prescription medication and nonmedical transportation.
To qualify for the Managed Care Long-Term Care Program, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and submit to a complete care assessment to determine the type of care they require. Financial requirements of Florida’s Medicaid programs stipulate that applicants may not have an income that exceeds $16,040 when applying alone, while couples may not have an income that’s higher than $21,599. The Managed Care program is capped, which usually means there are substantial waiting lists for applicants wanting to participate in the program.
Seniors can contact the Florida Department of Elder Affairs at (800) 963-5337 to obtain more information about the application and wait-list times.
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)
Florida’s PACE program is aimed at seniors who require a nursing level of care. Its intention is to provide no-cost or low-cost access to a variety of home and community-based services that may help them to avoid institutionalization. Services provided by PACE may include assisted living or home care services, nonmedical transportation and case management. Participants of PACE receive all types of health care and long-term care from a single provider. PACE is administered by the Department of Elder Affairs.
To be eligible for PACE, applicants must be 55 years of age or older. They must also be able to live safely in their own home or in an assisted living facility and a care assessment is required to determine the applicant’s level of need. Financially, applicants are subject to the same requirements as the Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program.
To apply for PACE, seniors living in Palm Beach Gardens can call (561) 868-2999.
Optional State Supplementation
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income may qualify for Florida’s Optional State Supplementation (OSS). OSS is a cash benefit that’s designed to provide seniors who receive long-term care with additional funding for room and board costs, which aren’t typically covered by Medicaid programs.
OSS benefit amounts are determined by the applicant’s living situation and current income. The maximum payout is $78.40 per month. Seniors applying for OSS may not have a monthly income exceeding $849.40 and may not have assets that are valued higher than $2,000.
Seniors who wish to apply for OSS can contact ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.
Long-Term Care Insurance
A long-term care insurance policy covers the cost of assisted living or nursing home care. Policyholders typically purchase their policies earlier in life, prior to reaching the point of needing long-term care. After paying the deductible, and if applicable, the co-pay amount, seniors can have their insurance provider pay for their care or reimburse their costs. Most policies require that deductibles are paid annually.
Each long-term care insurance provider has different eligibility guidelines and policy terms, but typically, anyone who is in poor health does not qualify for long-term care insurance.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services provides seniors with an alternative payment method while they await permanent funding. While they must be repaid in full, bridge loans offer seniors some relief when it comes to paying the cost of care in assisted living facilities. Elderlife Financial pays the cost of services in full on behalf of seniors who are approved for a bridge loan. Seniors then pay the loan back in monthly installments. Loans are available with low interest rates and flexible terms.
While eligibility is determined by income and credit history, seniors may include up to six cosigners on their application, which may increase the likelihood of approval and reduce monthly payments. Seniors can learn more about Elderlife bridge loans or start their application by calling (888) 228-4500.
Senior centers provide those aged 55 and older with a place to gather with peers and take part in various activities that may include congregate meals, educational programming, social activities and day trips.
