It was nice, but it wasn't going to work for my mother. It was clean and neat, but my mother wouldn't be happy there. It had an older look, but I think the actual dining area and the rooms were good. The staff, Penny, did a wonderful job showing us around. She showed us the crafts room, the library, the activities room, and the room. The staff was very good.

Aravilla Assisted Living & Memory Care was a nice place. It was clean, and it was nice. It was built in a circle. The staff was friendly, and the rooms were nice. They offered everything, like arts and crafts. It was lovely, and I really liked it, but it was just too expensive.

I visited the Grand Villa of Englewood. It's nice, the people were nice, and the facility was nice. They showed me a 1-bedroom and a studio, and they actually had one smaller than a studio. They had all kinds of activities, and they had a swimming pool and all kinds of stuff like a game room and a TV room. They told me they had three meals a day, but I didn't see the food.

Our biggest issue with Heron House was the shared room and the price, and they weren't willing to negotiate or help at all. Everybody was very friendly. They showed us different rooms, and they were nice. With just a half a wall separating their two areas that was waist high, I thought that it could be very problematic for senior citizens. They had quite a bit of activities like games and trips to stores.

Sarasota is the one we want to go to live. We want to take the villa, it's like a condo, all on first floor, overlooking the lake. They've got 2-bedrooms, 2-baths, we want to have an undercover for the car, and they have a glassed-in patio, so that makes an extra room. It's more footage, it has a full kitchen, oven, stove, dishwasher, and they have a washer and dryer in the apartment. They don't do the laundry, they give you 2 meals a day, and they also have a central building in addition to the villas. The staff is very good, and she's not pushy. They had a bus, and they were going to take the people somewhere. They take pets.

My mom moved into Grand Villa of Englewood assisted living and she just absolutely loves it. What they do there that I think is better than a lot of other communities is that the people who need more assistance, like the people in memory care, have their own dining room, their own wing, and they have things segregated. The people that are independent or assisted are all in one area and they share the dining room. It's just a better situation. They have an activity director whom I hope they'd keep because she's just very vibrant and tries to pull people who are a little apprehensive or shy out of their shell and get them involved. The meals are good. They have a pavilion and bistro area for coffee. The residents also have little pods that they wear around their neck that they can use if they need assistance. They also have pull chains in the bathroom and bedroom for the nurse to come. People don't pay the same price as it's based on the rooms. If you're in a studio and need lesser care, its a lesser price. As the need goes up, the price goes up. They work with a physician staff and they come in periodically so I don't have to pick my mom up and take her to the doctor and take her back. They also will take them to Walmart or to a doctor's appointment if it's in the local vicinity. They also have LPNs on site.

Heron East was more assisted living, but my dad was not at that stage yet, so that's why I picked another more independent community. The staff member who helped me during the tour was super nice and very knowledgeable. The rooms were a little small, and they only had a studio set up, so it was just one room with a bathroom. The dining room was very nice and everybody ate at their own little tables. I didn't try the food.

My husband was in Arden Courts of Sarasota for less than a month, and if everything goes OK in rehab, he will go back there. The place was friendly and nice, but very old fashioned design and amenities wise. They had small rooms designed for everybody, so they would feel comfortable walking from the bed to the toilet or bed to the chair, and they don't have to cross a lot. They had a lot of common areas and railings. The food and their cook were very good. The activities were dedicated to memory care and were a bit quaint. We encouraged him to participate in their trivia, group crossword, and bingo. He didn't always like the food, but they were very caring about giving something that he might eat. I would like to consider a cord button for memory care people who actually can use it like my husband, as opposed to dragging himself out of bed and going somewhere to call a nurse. They said nurses pass by or check him periodically, but it's not that periodical. He had good rapport with the other nurses, but there was a nightshift nurse who he had a really big problem with. Generally, it's a very good place.

Desoto Beach Club was absolutely marvelous. I would move in immediately, but you have to move out when you need assistance. You can't stay there because it's just independent living. The residents I met were marvelous, and the staff was lovely. It was a really nice place.
