I visited this facility

I visited Titusville, that place was bad. I think it's a dump, and it might be the income level, they may not be paying they're staff enough to care. There's probably people working there that do not get a reason for income, and so they're getting people working there that aren't motivated because they're not getting paid. I think that's probably optimally what happens in those places, they're not paying their employees a good wage, so it's hard to probably retain good employees for them. I did not have a positive experience with Titusville Rehab. The place stunk really, really bad, it stunk real bad, it smelled real bad. The staff doesn't do anything unless you ask them.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited Crescent Wood. They were called something else back then. I visited probably within the last three years, about two and a half years ago. I went to both independent and assisted living there. The independent living, the little apartments and everything, they're nice, but they could use a little better maintenance and upkeep as far as on the outside. But in size, they're fairly nice. I mean, they're a little bit aged, a lot of people moved in and out. It's fairly OK. The assisted living part, it was a little, I guess, it was smelly to me; there was a heavy smell, though I don't know if it's in all those places or if it's just that particular place. I had an uncle that stayed there for two years. He went from independent living to assisted living, until completely rehab. The little pricey rooms or independent living if you wanna call them, they're like a little efficiency apartment, and they're pretty nice. My mother said she wouldn't mind going there because my uncle had stayed there, and it's right down the street from where my mother lives now. She used to go visit her brother there, that's why she said, "That place is kinda nice, I wouldn't mind staying there.'' They have cable TV, they have games, and people visiting. If you're independent, you could probably drive in and out all you wanted. The little apartments have a little parking lot in front of them. They do have people come in, I would say for what do you call it manicures, pedicures, hair service. They have a bus that takes them if they wanna go to the movies or shopping. We lived a way from main street, so if you wanna do anything you actually have to drive about ten, fifteen miles to get anywhere. Movies are close by, we have movies, and we have grocery stores and stuff, but if they wanna go to a shopping center and a nice one, they would have to go for a drive. They have buses there for transportation, and I think they take you if you need help for medicine, if you need a doctor's visit, they're very good in helping their population with that. I've tried the food there, sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's not.

I visited Royal Oaks. It's terrible, you don't want me to explain how terrible. When I cross the board at Royal Oaks, it's dirty, it's stinks, it's unsafe, people walk, there's no security. I don't know about today with the COVID. I've not gone in there during the COVID time, but before that, I've known three or four different people, two of them family members, two of them were friends, acquaintances, and they were totally unhappy, I was unhappy, and so glad to get my family or friend out of there. I'll never go back in there again. They just kind of sit and space off, and spare off in the space there.

I visited this facility

Crescent Wood was nice, very clean, and very organized. The person who assisted me was wonderful, answered all our questions, very knowledgeable, and very pleasant. She took us around to all the different areas. It was a Saturday morning, so it was pretty quiet. They had a pool, a game room, a TV room, dining room, and a little library.

Assisted Living Costs in Titusville

According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, assisted living costs in Titusville are below the national average of $4,000 and above the state average of $3,500. Assisted living costs are comparable to other cities along Florida’s Atlantic coast such as Sebastian ($3,524) and Port St. Lucie ($3,620), while costs in Jacksonville ($4,425) are higher.

Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Titusville, so data for the Palm Bay Area in Brevard County was used.

Care Cost Comparison

The cost of senior care is largely based on the location, the type of services and the number of direct care hours provided weekly. In Titusville, nursing home care in a semiprivate room is more than twice the cost of assisted living, while in-home care services, such as a home health aide or homemaker costs, are about the same as assisted living.  When comparing the costs of different senior care options, it’s important to factor in additional daily expenses of in-home care, such as rent, utilities, food and home maintenance. These room and board costs are usually included in the cost of residential care for seniors.  Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Titusville

Medicaid in Florida

Medicaid is a joint federal and state health coverage program that’s paid for with government tax revenues. It provides low-income Americans of all ages with access to preapproved services from health care providers who accept Medicaid. Seniors who are eligible for Medicaid coverage may also have access to long-term care services, such as nursing home care, diagnostic services and rehabilitation.

In Florida, seniors aged 65 and older need to meet specific income and asset criteria to qualify for Medicaid coverage. Individual applicants can earn no more than $2,313 a month from all sources, including pensions, wages and investment interest, while couples applying together are subject to a $4,626 monthly income limit.

Medicaid applicants are also subject to strict asset limits of $2,000 for singles and $3,000 for a couple. Counted assets include cash, bank account balances, stocks, bonds and real estate. Excluded assets are personal effects, household items, one vehicle and a principal residence occupied by the applicant(s) valued at $585,000 or less.

As with all other states, except California, there is a five-year look-back period for Medicaid applicants in Florida. Any assets that an applicant sells, gifts or otherwise disposes of during the 60-month period prior to applying for Medicaid coverage, will be audited. In some cases, this can result in a waiting period before benefits can begin.

Florida has recently replaced all Medicaid HCBS waivers with the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program (SMMC LTC). Medicaid-qualified seniors who meet the criteria for nursing home placement based on care needs may be eligible for additional supports to help them live in their own homes or an assisted living facility.

Under the LTC program, seniors will be assigned services based on medical need and availability. Services may include a homemaker, medication administration and management, transportation and speech, physical and occupational therapy.

For more information about Medicaid or the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) in Florida, apply online at ACCESS Florida, or call the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662 or the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.
