My elderly mother lived here and had to be moved out, due to lack of care. The staff is very rude and they do not fulfill their duties as health care providers and care takers. The \"nurses\" are never to be seen.If you ask for anything or try to follow up you get no response or attitude. Extremely sad. I had to watch my mother decline drastically during her time there. My mother had difficulty taking care of herself and she had to beg the nurses to get a shower and she still would be ignored !!!! I wound not recommend this place to anyone!!

After touring the facility we were excited to admit my 90yo mother to this beautiful facility but a dementia diagnosis meant alternative placement was warranted. Rebecca was understanding but still refused to refund our $1000.00 deposit which I feel is unfair. Please make sure to read the fine print before moving forward or u will regret it

Please don\'t bring your loved one here. It is horrible. They are understaffed, inattentive to patients. The woman who runs the place is cruel and incompassionate to patients loved ones. My husband had 6 months to live and died in 10 days. He was so depressed. Horrible food. His children threw him in there. They wanted his money. He was so sad. They left him in his room all day in wet pull ups. Please don\'t go there.

I have been in Coastal Health and Rehabilitation Center for over a year now. They helped me get back in shape, and then I got a little bit too over-shaped now. I've had my ups and downs in here, but I would actually give them a pretty good rating. They are under new management right now. They just flipped over to a new company that owns this place, and I don't know how it's going to go from there. They are pretty strict on everything. The physical place stays pretty clean. They work really hard to keep it clean all the time, but they have some nasty residents in here. The residents treat most of the staff pretty bad. Most staff I've dealt with here have been really polite and nice and would help me in any kind of way I need it. Right now, because the management is changing, they have a different style of food. I don't believe I could get the care, the doctors, the nursing, and help that I need for what I pay if I were somewhere else. They are pretty reasonable, and they have all been very special.

My mom will move into Villa Grande on Saxon. It's clean, the employee was attentive, friendly, and very helpful. We're actually going to take the smallest unit, but it was very roomy. The dining area was not open because of COVID-19. They have a swimming pool, they have a gymnasium, and they have a computer room.

Was there in May of this year for therapy, could not wait to get away from there. Not even close to what one would expect and what was recommended to me. My prayers are that no one else gets the same kind of treatment that I received.

I loved Sterling Court; the community was great. They showed me several apartments, and the one I liked very much was very bright and had large windows. It was very nice. When I was there they had a party going on so I never got to sample the food, but I enjoyed my tour; it was very nice there. I went there to check out the independent living. They give you three meals a day, and they have all kinds of activities going on. There are standard things like playing cards. The staff member I met there was very nice. They were having a Hawaiian party when I visited and one of the girls came out in a grass skirt who introduced herself as one of the staff members. As I was going into the elevators, one of the entertainers was singing Hawaiian songs, and it was fun. The building itself was very nice, very clean, and it had a beautiful entrance.

Ormond in the Pines was a nice community and the people were really friendly. I saw a room, and it was spacious, and very comfortable looking. It was also handicapped accessible, which is good for me. It had a small kitchenette. I saw the dining room, people were playing bingo, cards, and things like that. It was a great place, and if they would take me I would take them. I also saw a couple of the specialized rooms for parties and things like that. I talked to their coordinator who does all the exercise stuff and activities for the seniors. She told me there was a lot to do there and I was impressed. I didn't sample anything to eat, but I looked at the menu and it looks good. They offer three meals a day. They also have kitchenettes in the rooms, so a guy like me could even eat five times a day if I wanted.

Seaside Manor was very much willing to work with us. The people were friendly. The rooms were spacious. It was an older place. My husband, who is an electrician, noticed that the electrical panels were quite old. That was the only negative that we saw, other than that, everything else seemed very nice. They have Aloha Night and church services, a library, a van, and activities that they would sign up for to go to. They also had a good chef.

Care Cost Comparison
The cost of senior care services are largely based on the location, type of care and hours of direct service provided. In Volusia County, the cost of nursing home care is more than twice the cost of assisted living. In-home senior care with a home health aide or homemaker service is slightly more expensive than assisted living. Unlike residential senior care services, in-home services do not include expenses related to maintaining a home, such as rent, property maintenance and utilities. Seniors should factor in these costs when comparing the cost of care options. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Volusia County
Medicaid in Florida
Medicaid is a nationwide health insurance program that is jointly funded by the federal government and each state. It provides limited health coverage to low-income children, adults and seniors who have very few assets. In Florida, the Agency for Health Care Administration administers Medicaid.
Seniors aged 65 and older who are residents of Florida must meet specific financial criteria to qualify for Medicaid coverage. Single seniors must earn less than $2,313 per month and have countable assets valued at $2,000 or less. Couples applying for Medicaid together must have a joint income of less than $4,626 per month and have $3,000 or less in countable assets.
Medicaid includes income from all sources, such as wages, pensions and investment interest. Countable assets include cash, bank account balances, stocks and all real estate except for a principal residence worth $585,000 or less. One vehicle, household furniture, clothing and jewelry are also excluded under Medicaid asset rules.
As with all states except California, Florida has a five-year Medicaid asset look-back period. Medicaid applicants may be subject to ineligibility penalties levied on any countable assets they gifted or transferred during the five years prior to their Medicaid application. Look-back penalties are calculated by dividing the total market value of any “uncompensated transfers” during the look-back period divided by the average cost per month of a private-pay nursing home.
Seniors in Florida who qualify for Medicaid coverage and have nursing home-level care needs may be eligible for assistance through the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long-Term Care Program, or SMMC LTC.
This program is designed to delay or prevent nursing home placement among older adults by providing additional care services in the community and assisted living facilities. Services through the LTC program are delivered according to medical necessity as determined by each individual’s managed care plan.
LTC services may include:
- Assisted living facility services
- Medical supplies and equipment
- Medication management and administration
- Occupational, speech, respiratory and physical therapy
For more information on Medicaid and the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long-Term Care program in Florida, contact the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662 or the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Optional State Supplementation
Florida seniors aged 65 and older who qualify for Supplemental Security Income benefits may also be eligible for funding for the room-and-board portion of residential care at an assisted living facility through the Optional State Supplementation program.
The OSS program is administered by the Florida Department of Children and Families and funded by state-generated revenue. In most cases, individual applicants may receive a maximum monthly OSS payment of $78.40, while couples applying together may get up to $156.80.
For more information about the Florida OSS, call ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.
Veterans Aid and Attendance Program
Veterans and survivors who receive a VA pension and require care from another person daily may be eligible for the Aid and Attendance pension top-up. This benefit may also be available to veterans who are ineligible for a basic pension because their income exceeds the VA pension income limits.
To qualify, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Require a caretaker to assist with activities of daily living such as toileting, dressing, eating or adjusting a prosthetic device
- Live in a nursing home as a result of mental or physical incapacity
- Have corrected eyesight of 5/200 or worse in both eyes, or suffer from concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 or fewer degrees
- Be largely bedridden due to a disability or disabilities
- Note that veterans who receive a VA disability pension are excluded from this program.
To apply to the Aid and Attendance Program, contact the Volusia County Veterans Services Division at (386) 740-5102 or the Orlando Vet Center at (407) 857-2800.
Veterans Housebound Allowance
Veterans who have a VA disability rating of 100 percent, receive a VA pension and are mainly limited to their place of residence due to a permanent disability may be eligible for a VA pension top-up through the Veterans Housebound Allowance. Applicants do not need to have service-related disabilities for this program.
For more information about the Veterans Housebound Allowance, contact the Volusia County Veterans Services Division at (386) 740-5102 or the Orlando Vet Center at (407) 857-2800.
