The rooms are decent. The food is terrible. It does smell like urine or cigarette sample when entering the building. Activities director, Executive director and Wellness director are wonderful. Sales director was your typical “salesperson” and made lots of promises and pressure tactics to get us to move in. Caregiver’s were hurried and rough with resident. If you have a caregiver on sight the staff does not check on resident. We discovered after 24 hours and numerous issues with care this place was not for my mom. Paid over $1400 and they refuse to refund any money. They required a 30 day notice. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee. Executive director refuses to provide contact for upper management. I would NEVER recommend this facility to anyone. Terrible.

The villas are beautiful and the people that live there are exceptional. That said, The only amenities are a clubhouse and a fire pit. There are a couple exercise machines but that’s it. As far as I can tell, They promised the residents the moon and it was all puffery. There are no organized activities or conveniences. and worse, the builder/developer’s hoa sold the transportation vehicle. The actual residents care for one another and create their own gatherings. ZERO STARS for this developer or creator.

We went to Magnolia Senior Living Sugar Hill. it was very clean, they had impressive grounds, impressive lobby, the specific room that I saw was good, the problem we had was I had my sister go back afterwards, and it was a completely different experience. The person on staff was either new, or couldn't answer any questions. That caused a pause, and after that happened I left a couple of messages, and then just didn't get a response back. There was a communication lapse. My experience was good and my brother was with me, but my sister, it was not a good experience. There is only one person that is really qualified to give the tour, and that person was not there. The other person that was there was really nice, but it would be like me giving a tour of a place I did not know, or else I was brand new, or else I wasn't in that position, so that's what happened.

We went to Laurel Grove. It was very welcoming and clean, it looked like the residents were active, so I was very satisfied with the place. The place was very nice, the staff was very open, and she took her time with me, so I was very appreciative of that. It wasn't rushed or anything just to make me feel comfortable, and answered all questions, concerns, everything. I saw apartments with or without balconies, the studio, and one-bedroom floor plans. Everything looked updated, and it was a nice, little arrangement. I saw the activity room, the dining area, a communion area, and I think I saw the chapel, and I was satisfied with all. I didn't see the actual food itself. I did see the menu, that would be a five, and also I was very impressed with their COVID check-in process.

My mother is in Cambridge Post Acute Care Center. The only thing I would like for them to do a little bit more is give me a report twice a week on how she is doing with rehab. The staff members are fine. They answer all my questions. There are two beds in her room, and her wheelchair and her chair are in there. The room could be a little bit bigger; it's small for two people to be in there. My mom is a picky eater. I take her a couple things I cook for her. I put her name and number, and they give it to her. She had to be in quarantine for 14 days, so they would just come in and do in-room therapy. After today, they're going to take her to the gym. There's an outdoor area and they said after her 14 days I can make an appointment with them, and they would bring her outside. There is a long balcony with chairs, and we could sit six feet away with masks.

I love Laurel Grove. I like the people, the food, everything. They have home care that comes in for the residents. I'm really pleased with the food. Their spaghetti was the best I've ever had. Everybody is nice. It's a lovely place to live. The staff is very personable. My cottage has 2 rooms, 2 baths, a living area, a full kitchen, a garage, a patio, and a yard for the dogs.

Brookdale Lawrenceville is very clean. My dad's room is always kept nice and clean, and the hallways are always clean. The place is clean-smelling. The staff members are very nice and very helpful. The dining area is clean. Residents get three choices of what they would like to eat, which my dad enjoys. They have lots of different programs that he can attend, which is what we wanted for him. It is very nice. They have different kinds of activities, and during the holiday, they always have programs.

In Gwinnett County, home care is about $500 more expensive per month than assisted living. However, assisted living works out to be even less expensive than home care when other expenses are taken into account. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Gwinnett County
Medicaid in Georgia
In Georgia and throughout the U.S., Medicaid ensures that low-income families and individuals, including seniors, pregnant women and disabled people, have access to quality health care. Services provided by Medicaid include doctor visits, medical treatment, diagnostic testing, dental care and prescription medications. In Georgia, the only form of long-term care covered by the standard state plan is nursing home care.
For seniors who require help with the cost of assisted living, the state’s Community Care Services Program (CCSP) Waiver may provide the funding they need. The waiver exists to provide assisted living and nursing services to elderly people who want to avoid moving to a nursing home. Services may be provided at home or within an assisted living facility. Other services covered under the waiver include respite care, personal care, medical equipment and transportation.
To qualify for the state Medicaid plan and the CSSP waiver as an elderly person, applicants must be 65 or older and not have an income higher than $2,313 (individual) or $4,262 (couple) per month. Asset limitations stipulate that applicants may not possess more than $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (couple) in countable assets. All applicants are also required to undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine their level of need.
The state Medicaid plan is an entitlement program, which means that all eligible applicants are approved to participate. The CCSP waiver, on the other hand, is capped at 19,000 participants. That often means that eligible seniors will be placed on a waiting list before being provided with services.
To apply or to learn more about the CCSP waiver waiting list times, seniors can call (866) 552-4464.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Optional State Supplement
Georgia’s optional state supplement is a cash benefit that’s jointly funded by the state and federal governments. Its provided to low-income elderly and disabled persons who receive long-term care, either at home or within a facility. This benefit exists to provide some assistance to help these individuals pay for costs that aren’t covered by Medicaid, such as room and board.
To qualify for this benefit, applicants must already receive Supplemental Security Income and meet state Medicaid eligibility requirements. To apply, seniors can call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)
Georgia’s non-Medicaid HCBS program is funded by the Georgia Department of Human Services and administered by the 12 Area Agencies on Aging. It provides a range of services to elderly individuals, including nutritional counseling, senior companion services, regular nurse visits and fitness classes. Although this program doesn’t pay for the cost of assisted living, the services that it provides may help seniors to reduce their out-of-pocket expenses and avoid further institutionalization.
There are no financial restrictions on this program and participants are accepted based on need and availability. Preference is given to those with the greatest need. Applicants must be age 60 or older. To apply, seniors can contact the Atlanta Regional Commission Aging Division at (404) 463-3333.
Long Term Care Insurance
Long-Term Care Insurance helps seniors to pay for assisted living, home care and nursing care costs, provided they’ve purchased a long-term care insurance policy while still in relatively good health. These policies and their premiums vary depending on the provider, but generally, the senior will be required to pay an annual deductible, as well as small co-pay amount, prior to receiving reimbursement from their insurance provider.
