I checked out Mt. Carmel Personal Care Home. The administration seemed okay, but the facility seemed pretty old and outdated too. I did not like it at all, it was going to be a good distance from my home, and it would be a bad drive to get there to see my mom. The room I visited was clean.

I really liked Bickford of Crystal Lake. It was beautiful and I liked the activities they had. I liked everything they offered. The staff member who showed me around was awesome and great. The place felt homey. The bar and the food were nice. I highly recommend it.

My mother was in Laurel Park when she fell and broke her hip. You would press the button and nobody would come. They set my mother on the pot, they left her in the bathroom unattended, she fell, and she split her hip wide open. She did her rehab in the morning, and they would take her down and set them in the hall with some of the other ladies and they would sit there all day long. It used to be assisted living, but turned into a rehab center. It was clean, but it was understaffed. The food looked fine, but her food was pureed. The building was clean, they had a pretty nice rehab area, and it did not have a urine smell.

We liked Mt. Carmel Personal Care Home, but I won't put my dad in there. They were nice, but the place was a lot older. The staff member who showed us around was nice and she said that you could bring your loved one there when you want to go out of town for two or three days, or if you want to just have a day of doing nothing. We could bring Dad and he could stay for a few hours up to 12 hours a day. We loved that part of it. It was more like home. He would share a room there. They have nice, private rooms, but there was nothing available at the time.

We recommended Clarendale of Algonquin to our parents. The lady was very informative and helpful. We really liked the facility. We got a lovely tour of the place. The rooms were small. They have movies, they have activities, and they can go in and out. They do the laundry, provide meals, housekeeping, and transportation.

My father moved into the assisted living level of Clarendale of Algonquin. It's a very nice community. We've had some good staff members and some bad ones, but most of them are friendly. His room is very nice, clean, it's well lit, and there's a lot of room for him to move around. The grounds and location are good, it's well-kept, and clean.

My parents are currently here. We chose it because of their availability and the services they offer. It's a great place. They offer field trips, bingo, crafts, movies, family get-togethers, bible study, and just about anything that an elderly person could want. The food is great and they have a full dining room service. They give them choices. They have a chef selection of the day and if they're not happy with that. They can order sandwiches, soups, or other items, so they're not limited. Everything is done with full table settings, complete with silverware, crystal, and tablecloths. It's like a five-star dining area.

It was very nice. Everything was on one level, the décor was pleasing, and it was clean and didn't smell funny. The person who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable. It was getting close to lunch hour, so I didn't see any activities.

There was a very helpful person at Mt. Carmel Personal Care Home that showed us the facility, but the place was older, and I just wasn't impressed. The room size was good and very appropriate. They need to update their facility.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Henry County
Medicaid in Georgia
Medicaid is a program that’s funded jointly by the federal and state governments. It exists to provide basic medical coverage to low-income individuals throughout Georgia, including families, children, pregnant women and the elderly.
To qualify for Medicaid in Georgia as an elderly individual, seniors must have a personal care assessment, which determines their level of need. Financially, individual applicants may not have a monthly income that exceeds $2,250 and may not have assets valued at more than $2,000. Exempt assets include the individual’s home, household furnishings, personal belongings and a single vehicle.
Georgia Community Care Services Program Medicaid Waiver
Those who require access to long-term care may be able to receive financial assistance or fully covered services under a Medicaid waiver program called the Community Care Services Program Waiver. CCSP provides frail elderly individuals with supportive services while they continue living in their own home or in an assisted living facility. Its purpose is to reduce the number of seniors who receive care in nursing home facilities, which are exceptionally expensive when compared to home care and assisted living services and often create large deficits for Medicaid programs.
Under this program, seniors who reside in assisted living may receive help with the cost of care as well as regular nurse visits, access to medical care, prescription medications and transportation services. CCSP enrollment is limited, with a capacity of 19,000, which means that regardless of eligibility, some seniors may have to go on a waiting list. To learn more about the program or find out about wait times, seniors can call (866) 552-4464.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Home and Community-Based Services
Home and Community-Based Services are provided by the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services and administered by 12 Area Agencies on Aging. While these programs don’t necessarily pay for assisted living, some of the services provided by HCBS can benefit those in assisted living facilities by reducing the costs they pay for additional care and lowering their need for further institutionalization once they’ve reached a nursing level of care. Services may include nutrition and wellness counseling, physical fitness classes, senior companion services, nonmedical transportation, personal and nursing care assistance and support groups.
There are no financial eligibility requirements for these services and acceptance is on a case-by-case basis. Seniors who wish to access this program must be aged 60 or older. To apply for HCBS, seniors can contact the Atlanta Regional Commission Aging Division at (404) 463-3333.
Optional State Supplement
Georgia, in part with the federal government, provides Medicaid recipients who live in long-term care facilities with a small cash benefit. The optional state supplement provides low-income individuals with extra cash to use for the cost of room and board in their care facility or to pay for other necessary expenses. In Georgia, the maximum combined federal and state supplement is $50.
To qualify for this benefit, seniors must meet the same eligibility requirements as for the state Medicaid program and must receive the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit. To apply for the optional state supplement, seniors can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
