Bickford of Aurora was very nice and brand new. It's a beautiful facility, but my parents need more care. They adjust their prices according to the care, but it would've been very expensive for the level of care that my parents would need. The staff was very good, very friendly and gave us a lot of good information. There were people out in the common area playing games. The rooms were nice, but a little on the smaller side. It's a brand new place, so everything was very nice, in good shape, and clean.

It was really nice and very attractive. It had everything that we needed, except that we needed a two-bedroom and they didn't have one available at the time. The place was clean, their menus looked good as far as the food, and the people were friendly. It was just a really nice place, but it did not match what my folks needed. Another thing that was good about it was that it was convenient because it was really close to a hospital (only about a block and a half away), so that's nice. I felt like the staff member's answers to my questions were sincere; they weren't trying to sell the place and they were just being honest. The building itself was clean. It looked brand new, it was nice, and it had a good view of the river where the people could sit outside. There was also a walking path.

Plum Landing was smaller and older than other places. The area that it's in seems to be an older area and there was heavily traveled street right in front of the building. The building seemed to be a little older. There was only one unit that had a kitchen. They had a much older population and they didn't seem to have a lot of activities posted. Interestingly, when you walk in the front and speak to the person at the desk, you were on the fifth floor. The building was behind that down a hill. It's not a facility that I would consider. There was a chapel and I saw one area which was part of the dining room. It's used off hours for card playing and things of that sort. The staff member was very courteous and friendly, but they were a little understaffed overall.

I visited the assisted living of Sunnymere, and it's not what I need. It was for residents 65 and older. It seemed OK. The staff was very nice. It didn't smell bad, it had a good atmosphere, and I would recommend them for assisted living.
Map of Aurora, Illinois
Information About Assisted Living Facilities in Aurora
On the Fox River, just outside cosmopolitan Chicago, waits the second most populous city in the state of Illinois. Once a mid-sized manufacturing city, Aurora has grown tremendously since the 1960s, swelling to an impressive 197,899 citizens. Drawn by decades of dependable factory jobs, generations of European immigrants flocked to the city, from Great Britian, Ireland, Scandanavia, Luxembourg, Germany, France and Italy. Nicknamed the “City of Lights,” it was one of the first cities in the United States to implement an all-electric street lighting system. A city with a real wealth of history, a progressive city with a tradition of inclusiveness and tolerance, Aurora is also home to an impressive amount of notable architecture, including structures by Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Goff . Seniors considering assisted living in Aurora will appreciate the city’s rich history and wealth of senior-friendly activities.
Aurora Medical Facilities
Aurora assisted living residents can choose between two major hospitals to receive medical care. Located on the west side, the Provena Mercy Medical Center is a general medical and surgical hospital which is also a Certified Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission and an Accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. In Fox Valley, next to the river, the Rush-Copely Medical Center provides day surgery, outpatient, imaging, diagnostics and physician offices.
With a rich history, plenty of activities, reliable transportation, and state-of-the-art medical facilities, Aurora assisted living is an excellent choice for seniors. For more information on senior living in Aurora, see our options for Aurora assisted living.
Organizations Serving Seniors in Aurora
Just the transportation perks alone for seniors in Aurora are quite nice. The Volunteer Transportation Program, for instance, devotes itself to providing free transportation to seniors aged 60 or better while ‘Ride in Kane’ is an affordable curb-to-curb transportation service that takes registered riders anywhere within a 10-mile radius in Kane County, of which Aurora is a part of. Riders can make a reservation to get to doctor appointments, take care of grocery shopping, attend church, go to the movies, or be driven any other place just because they have a hankering to go. A non-profit which dedicates itself to serving Aurora’s senior population, Senior Services Associates can help with accessing state benefits and programs for which seniors are eligible and those in assisted living Aurora would require. Aurora Senior-Friendly Activities Along with helpful direction and access to resources, Senior Service Associates also holds Bingo nights, serves lunches and dinners, organizes knitting clubs and offer walking tours around Aurora’s downtown, which is chock full of architectural landmarks and historic places to visit. Take in the Diwali firework show at a major Hindu temple, for instance, or go animal watching at Phillips Park Zoo. Originally established in 1915, the zoo is still open year-round with no admission charge. With so many free and low-cost activities, seniors who choose assisted living in Aurora don’t have to worry about breaking the budget. If history is of interest, the monthly guest speakers at the Aurora Historical Museum might be the ticket. Or the Schingoethe Museum of Native American Cultures located on the Aurora University Campus is a sure bet for an interesting day trip into the past.
