The first year was fine but then frequent administrative turnover became an issue. There were eight different Directors and Assistant Directors of Health and Wellness during a three year period. This created problems with disease containment and nursing shortages (in January 2025 healthy residents attended activities on the same floor as residents with Influenza and Norovirus). There were four Directors of Culinary Services in three years. In the past year the meals became inedible (tough meat, lack of green vegetables, a lot of starch and high cholesterol). The Life Enrichment team were great and created many activities for the residents and with a sense of joy. I wish the other departments had the same leadership and passion for their positions and the resident's overall well being. We have moved our mom to a better senior living facility, but I would hope Corporate leadership could examine their administrators at Artis Lakeview Chicago.

My aunt and uncle are at Symphony Rehab/Nursing Home (Symphony 87th Street). With the virus, I haven't been able to see and check the place out. When I tried to give a visit on the computer, it never happened. I did an outdoor visit and with the virus going on, they only let you visit for 30 minutes, and that was a short visit. I feel like if I have to visit with both of them, each one of them should get 30 minutes, but instead it's 15 minutes a person. I didn't like it at all. My first impression of the facility was that it was clean. The young lady that is taking care of my aunt and uncle is very professional, but you don't have the same person all the time. As far as activities, when I talk to my aunt and uncle, they don't have any programs right now because of the virus. They don't do anything. They only provide very small servings of food. My aunt and uncle complain about being hungry. They're not professional at all. When you call them, you never get through on the phone. They hang up on you. I cannot get a Zoom visit, too. They don't know anything. It's like the blind leading the blind; the whole team doesn't know what the other hand is doing. There is no communication. They need to improve on everything. I think all of them need to be able to have some type of training. They should have professional people answering the call.

My dad's therapy at Symphony is fine with the rest of the care. They need to improve on the general patient care. Also the food, I know that the food in these facilities is not good, however, it should be warm and it should not be cold on a regular basis. The attentiveness of the general staff I think, needs to improve. I don't know if it's because they have so many, but they need to be attentive. I really can't give anything about the upkeep because I have not been inside the facility past the door to bring my dad something.

I visited someone at the Senior Suites of Chatham. I liked the washer and dryer on every floor near the elevator. The rooms were nice sized, and they had a lot of activities. They had an exercise area and a large open area in the back where the meals were served. They also had dancing and board games. The place was in very good condition, very well kept up and maintained.

Senior Suites of South Shore is a multiple story building. The people were extremely friendly and tried their best to accommodate me. They showed me the rooms, the activity center, the nurses' station, the cafeteria, the lunchroom where they make the trays, and the laundry facility. The floors weren't very clean, and I can't put my mother in that atmosphere even though they accept respite care, and they were going to allow me only one week unlike the others. The apartments were more like studios, and they were very small.

Attractions
With more than 7,000 restaurants in the city, residents of a Chicago independent living community will never become bored with the available dining options. From elegant fine dining and ethnic cuisine to the much-loved Chicago-style hot dog (a beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun loaded with toppings), there is a choice for every taste preference. After enjoying a satisfying meal, seniors make want to attend a live performance at The Second City or the Victory Gardens theaters. Alternatively, the musical offerings of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra or the Civic Opera House are sure to please as well. Dance lovers can attend performances by the Joffrey Ballet while sports lovers will definitely want to cheer on the Chicago Cubs at famous Wrigley Field, the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Blackhawks or the Chicago Bulls. The list of things to do in Chicago never seems to end. To name only a few more attractions, there are the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Shedd Aquarium in Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Navy Pier and the Willis Tower Skydeck.
Senior Activities
The city of Chicago operates the Senior Services Area Agency on Aging to meet the needs of the city’s senior population. Six Regional Senior Centers provide fitness and recreation programs as well as assessment and information services. Residents of a Chicago independent living community can obtain a photo identification card that will let them attend any of the six Senior Centers; some programs are offered for a small fee and some are free. Once a member of the centers, residents can use the state-of-the-art fitness equipment or attend classes in strength training, yoga, tai chi, balance and zumba. The Golden Diners Program offers seniors the opportunity to socialize and make new friends while sharing a hot and nutritious lunch.
Medical Facilities
Residents of a Chicago independent living community can be reassured that their health needs, whatever they may be, will be met in this city. The University of Chicago Medicine offers a geriatric medicine program geared to the special needs of individuals sixty-five years of age and older. The program includes the health management of senior cancer patients and survivors, frailty issues and a dedicated memory center. All care is managed through a patient’s own geriatrician, thus offering the stability and familiarity of a primary care doctor while also taking advantage of the expertise of specialists. The Geriatrics Division at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, along with the Northwestern University’s Buehler Center on Aging, offers evaluation and treatment for older adults. The hospital’s Geriatric Health Ministry offers health counseling, assessment and educational programs through local clergy and church members.
Transportation
Public transit is run by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). It is the second largest system of public transportation in the country and basically consists of two types of service: buses and the ‘L’, a subway line that takes its name from when the system began and was “elevated.” Lines are designated by color and the red and blue lines operate 24 hours a day. Both O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport can be accessed by the CTA. Residents of a Chicago independent living community can take advantage of a reduced fare program for seniors. The appeal of Chicago is impressive. Offering a vast selection of attractions, restaurants, sports teams, cultural events, a beautiful waterfront, as well as easy transportation and specialized medical care, Chicago is clearly an excellent place to call home.
