I liked the variety of the rooms. The apartment was very nice. The dining area was spacious. They had games, driving service to take people shopping and to other activities, and a library. The staff was very friendly, very helpful and very welcoming.

Briarwood Health and Rehabilitation Center' staff was very personable and friendly. The seniors who were there seemed to be content. The living space and security parameters there would meet my level of expectation for such a facility. They seem to be pretty organized in terms of activities for the residents. The place looked like it was being maintained and not rundown. It looks like it had some age to it and it doesn't look like they have done anything to modernize it, but it's not really old. They offer total care because some residents can't do much of anything for themselves. They seemed like they had adequate parking. The landscaping was maintained and had a neat appearance. The facility itself was kind of secluded so at least once you drive in, you don't have to worry about getting lost or getting turned around in the wrong direction once you get to that street or driveway. They're very easy to find.

I was not very impressed with Coventry Place. Their rooms were big and they offered apartments instead of just rooms. It was very old and shabby and did not seem like a very nice place. The people were very nice. They take residents shopping and have game nights. They have a full calendar of social events. The outside appearance and landscaping weren't bad, but they need to do extensive remodeling of the residents' units and the cafeteria area.

The staff member was very nice, gave me a tour of the full facility, followed up several times, and invited me to bring my mother out for lunch. It was nice that they followed up with me. It looked like an older place, but they were accommodating to their guests. We looked at two or three different rooms and that was very nice. I would have chosen it if I could afford it. They were getting ready for movie night, had a game night, and honored their veterans around Veterans Day. They had an arts class, which I thought was really nice to keep their hands moving.

The visit was good. The rooms were nice. The people were very nice. They had games and movie nights, and take them out to eat lunch. The dining room was nice. The amenities were good. It seemed like they cleaned the apartments once a week. The place was nice; I was impressed.

I have found pretty much everybody who works at Sunrise of Decatur to be very responsive and attentive. They're working diligently to see to my parents' needs. They provide regular activities for the residents, but they need to have a greater staffing level to facilitate that. My parents have a nice two-bedroom apartment with a kitchenette and big, bright windows.

Renaissance on Peachtree was like living in a fine hotel. The apartments were beautiful and very nice. They had a lot of activities like trips to the theater, shopping, galleries, and a workout room. It was kind of high scale. The dining room was like a restaurant because you can go in there and order what you want. They had about four or five restaurants that you could go to and eat in, but they don't have a big dining hall. The staff was pretty friendly, and one nice lady called me.

The rooms at Brookdale Dunwoody are good and clean, so I got one because I liked them better than the others I saw. They have an exercise room. The people are nice, and the food is good.

The community is not for truly active seniors as described. Rules and regulations are geared toward tenants who fall between assisted living and active with limitations. The quality of the the units are not good. Care was not taken to clean properly before move in. Difficulty keeping maintenance staff. Work orders for repairs are not always handled.

Assisted Living Costs in Dekalb County
The Genworth 2018 Cost of Care study reveals that the $4,770 monthly rate for assisted living in DeKalb County is much higher than the state ($4,030) and national ($4,000) averages. Only the metro Chicago area costs more ($4,794), but assisted living in Bloomington is almost as expensive at $4,650 per month. Other areas of Illinois are markedly more affordable, such as Kankakee ($3,986), Peoria ($3,750), Champaign ($3,578) and Carbondale, where assisted living costs average just $3,475 per month.
Note: Data on senior care costs wasn’t available for DeKalb County, so data for the nearest city, Rockford, was used.
Care Cost Comparison
Costs for different senior care options can vary considerably within a specific locale. These variances are due to factors such as the type of care, the skill level of services provided and the setting. Nursing home care is the most expensive option in DeKalb County, and assisted living costs about $1,000 less per month. While both are residential environments with room and board usually provided, nursing home rates are much higher because these facilities offer 24-hour skilled care. Homemaker or home health aide services may seem like a more affordable choice than assisted living since they average around $900 less per month. Day-to-day expenses such as food, upkeep, utilities and property taxes should be considered in addition to the price of in-home care services for a realistic cost comparison.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Dekalb County
Medicaid in Illinois
Medicaid is the nation’s widest-ranging health care program, serving more than 72 million low-income Americans from coast to coast. This jointly funded program is regulated by the federal government and administered at the state level.
In Illinois, the Department of Human Services administers Medicaid, and it’s called Medical Assistance. The program provides more than 2.25 million state residents with a number of basic health care services, including primary and specialist care, emergency room visits, hospital stays, lab and X-ray services, prescription drugs and institutional nursing home care.
To qualify for Medical Assistance coverage for long-term care, DeKalb County residents must be blind, disabled or aged 64 and older and a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Applicants must also have:
- A monthly income of less than $1,041 if single or $1,409 if married and both spouses apply
- Total countable assets of $2,000 or less if single or $3,000 if applying with a spouse
MA factors in income from all sources, but some assets aren’t counted, including a principal home, one vehicle, personal effects and household furnishings.
When only one spouse of a married couple applies, the non-applicant’s income is excluded. Up to $2,739 of the applicant’s monthly income also may be disregarded as a spousal allowance, along with up to $109,540 of the couple’s jointly owned assets.
Seniors with income above the limits may be able to qualify through the MA spend-down program. This program requires that excess monthly income is spent on allowable medical expenses, such as hospital or doctor bills, prescriptions, supplies or medical treatments, to reach the eligibility income level.
DeKalb County seniors can apply for MA online, by calling (815) 895-8667 or by visiting the DHS Family Community Resource Center at 1629 Afton Rd. in Sycamore.
