Please Beware. Nightmare experience. Short staffed, unprofessional and uncaring. Think twice before you send loved one there.

Solstice Senior Living at Joliet Independent Living is a very nice looking place. They keep it up very well, and I am very satisfied with everything especially the food. The dining area is very nice formal dining area. The food is very nice, and you are not eating the same thing every day (and not even every week). They got a very good chef here. He spreads the meals out, and it is really good. I have only been here a week. I like playing cards in the game room and the trivia games they play. The staff is extremely courteous, over-the-top almost. Everyone here are nice people, and they treat you with respect. There are plenty of activities, though you could sit in your room and watch TV if you want. There are always things to do. It is very clean, and they keep it up very nicely. It is very affordable, and I would have moved in earlier. It's just a really nice place to live.

I visited The Heritage at Hunters Chase and they were really great. I saw some of the seniors in action. I saw them taken to get snacks with the staff and the custodians helping them. They were courteous and friendly. The residents were being given respect. It was nice. The staff were soft-spoken and very caring. The lady I toured with was Audrey. She was so friendly, she took the time, and she even called back. The room I saw was a 1-bedroom but it had a half wall, so you could see an alcove. Since it's for two people it would have worked. I noticed that the facility was very clean, too.

Solstice Senior Living at Joliet was very welcoming and clean. They showed us several different apartments so we had an idea about them. We talked about updating carpets and replacing them with tiles, so they are working on updating it, which is nice. The staff was very helpful. She answered all our questions and explained the place very thoroughly. There weren't any activities going on at the time we went through, but they have a beauty shop, a weight room, a chapel, and a large common area.

We went to Rocky Hollow Lake. We were impressed, but the one concern that my husband had was that he didn't feel like it was as clean as he would like it to be. I know that they were also doing some construction, but I don't know if it's just because of the construction they were doing or if that's an "all the time" thing. Otherwise, we were very impressed with the facility. They only have single rooms; it's like what I would call an "efficiency apartment." When you walk in, there is a kitchenette where my sister-in-law would have a refrigerator. I can't remember if there was a microwave or not, but there's also a sink, and then a little peninsula that could be used as a dining table. It also had some cabinets. It's one large room, maybe thirteen feet by seventeen feet or something like that. It had a bath to the side with a walk-in shower, a toilet, a sink, and two closets for clothing. We were not as impressed with the showers in the rooms; they're a bit old. We were very impressed with the staff, too. They had a dining area where they ate and did some activities. They have a couple of courtyards where you can go out and sit. They have been doing activities regularly. They have had people coming in to sing and things like that, but right now it's COVID so things are different.

The apartment at Senior Suites of Joliet was very nice. I like it, and it was pretty spacious. I just can't live in a building where people smoke because I'm an asthmatic. The staff was very pleasant, explained everything well, and told me about the cost. We looked at a couple of apartments, but there was one that stood out for me. I like the parking area and all of that; there's just so much smoke in the hallway. I already live in Joliet, so I love the location. It was downtown Joliet. I didn't see any activities, but they told me about them, and there's a bus that will take you shopping. They were still doing work at that building.

It's been a month and a half since I have moved into The Clairmont. It's a very nice place. The hitch is all this COVID quarantine thing that we're all in. Nobody is allowed to do anything. Austin is completely on lockdown, so we are as well. I like my studio very much, it is lovely, and it's a good size. The grounds here are very nice, and the food is good. I am very pleased with it, but the biggest reason we chose this place is because it's the closest place to my daughter. The staff is very friendly here. There's no activity at the moment, but it's got nothing to do with The Clairmont. They normally have those, but we've been under quarantine since I got here. They have a beauty shop here where I had my haircut, and they did a good job. They have an exercise room with lovely equipment. The grounds are very nice. I have two little dogs and I have walked the grounds with them quite a bit. They're very friendly to animals here. They also let me paint my studio, so I had it with the color I wanted and I thought that was very nice. I'm very bad with names, but the staff here seems to know all of the residents. The residents also seem to know all of the staff. It's a very friendly community. The food is a little bland, but then it's for seniors, so I just add spices to it. It's well-cooked though, and it has a good variety.

I am resident of The Clairmont. I feel at home here. It's a very friendly place, and you get all your meals served. Your room is cleaned once a week. They have a lot of activities. I do not do too much of the activities; I am not well enough. But they have a lot of activities, they have a bus, and they go places. They have been doing bridge and all sorts of things, musicals, and they're bringing people in and everything. It's very nice. I like it. The room I have now is a studio. I was in an apartment, but I've got a studio now and I like it very much. My courtyard is beautiful. We have a patio and there is a beautiful courtyard with flowers. It is so cool. They have a beauty salon. There are plenty of activities, but it is independent living, and the food is very good. You get three meals a day. It comes with the lease, you know, the food. The place is very clean, and if somebody moves, they redo the rooms completely; new flooring, cabinets, and everything.
With monthly expenses nearly $800 above the state average of $4,030, Will County ($4,794) is one of the more costly areas for assisted living in Illinois, according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study. Nearby Rockford comes close with expenses averaging $4,770 per month, while cities to the south, such as Kankakee ($3,986) and Danville ($4,200), are moderately less costly. The Champaign area is the least expensive place in this region of Illinois for assisted living, with monthly expenses of $3,578, which is more than $400 less than the state and national averages.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available specifically for Will County, so data from the nearby Chicago area was used.
The single greatest influencing factor on the cost of senior care in Will County is the type of service. With an average monthly cost of $1,728, adult day health services are the least expensive type of care in the region, while nursing home care is over four times more costly at $7,330. Assisted living ($4,794) and in-home services ($4,576) fall toward the center of the cost spectrum, and although homemaker services and home health aide visits have identical monthly costs, actual expenses may vary depending on how many hours services are needed. Seniors should also factor in expenses related to maintaining their home when comparing the potential costs and benefits of residential versus in-home care.
Low-income state seniors may qualify for comprehensive medical benefits through Illinois Medicaid, which is commonly known as the Medical Assistance Program. Medicaid covers most essential health care needs, including physician visits, emergency room and urgent care services, and long-term residential care, such as assisted living. While there is no level-of-care requirement when applying for Medicaid for the aged, blind or disabled, the program has strict income limits. A single applicant must make no more than $1,041 monthly. For married couples with both spouses applying, the monthly income limit is $1,409. Eligibility guidelines also set an asset limit of $2,000 for single applicants, but, currently, there is no specified asset limit for married couples with both spouses applying.
For seniors who may not meet the program’s stringent eligibility requirements, the state provides multiple pathways to Medicaid eligibility. Individuals who have high medical bills but exceed the program’s income cap may benefit from the state’s medically needy pathway. Also known as the Medical Spend-down Program, this option allows individuals to spend down their income on medical bills until they fall within Medicaid limits. Expenses that may be applied toward the spend-down include physician visits, hospital stays and medical supplies. Once qualified applicants reach the spend-down, they receive a card to pay for additional medical expenses incurred that month.
Illinois also offers Medicaid planning services. For further information on Medicaid benefits, seniors should reach out to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. An online application is available at ABE.
Seniors in need of long-term care may also benefit from several state Medicaid waivers.
Illinois Supportive Living Program
The Illinois SLP provides low-income seniors with funds to offset services such as skilled nursing, medication assistance and personal-care aides. Qualified individuals can receive these services at home or in an assisted living program as an alternative to nursing home care.
Potential applicants receive a preadmission screening to determine medical requirements. To qualify for the program, individuals must demonstrate the need for a nursing home level of care. In addition, the assessment must determine that SLP services can meet an individual’s functional requirements at home or in a community-based program. Applicants must be 65 or older, and SSI income guidelines apply, with a monthly limit of $771 for a single applicant or $1,157 for a married couple with both spouses applying. All income must be used to pay the care provider although $90 may be withheld each month as a personal allowance.
For further information or to apply, seniors may contact the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services’ Bureau of Long-Term Care at (217) 782-0545.
Illinois Community Care Program
For seniors who require a nursing home level of care but want to maintain their independence, the state’s Community Care program funds a range of services, including emergency alert systems, medication dispensing services and personal aides to assist with activities of daily living. Services may be delivered at home or in an assisted living setting.
The program is open to Illinois residents aged 60 or older who demonstrate a need for long-term care. Applicants may not have more than $17,500 in assets, with certain exemptions, including a car, a house and any furnishings.
Will County residents can find out more about the Community Care program and its application process by phoning the state’s Senior Help Line at (800) 252-8966.
Optional State Supplementation
Illinois SSI recipients whose financial needs exceed the benefit amount plus any additional monthly income may qualify for an extra state-funded payout through OSS. Added directly to the federal SSI payment, this stipend is designed to offset expenses associated with assisted living programs. The allowance varies based on the applicant’s specific needs, marital status and living situation.
Will County residents who qualify for this benefit should work directly with the Social Security Administration field office in Joliet. Eligible seniors may visit the office in person or call (866) 783-7302 for more information.
VA Aid and Attendance
The federally funded VA Aid and Attendance program helps eligible wartime veterans aged 65 or over cover the cost of assisted living. To enroll in the program, veterans or their surviving spouses must have one or more of the following qualifying conditions:
Senior Services of Will County helps seniors maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle, offering health screenings and fall-prevention programs. The center sponsors professionally led support groups in which individuals aged 60 and over can pose questions and share thoughts on topics of concern. In addition to senior-focused programs and volunteer opportunities, Catholic Charities Aging and Disability Services has a long-term care ombudsman, who provides advocacy for residents in assisted living programs.
