Do not rent here. They have done about all they can to make my stay here a nightmare. Internet is supposed to be included in the rent but from the start they did not pay mine. Others who moved in after I did their internet has been paid. 4 times now I have been charged 2 months rent, back to back in a month. I take my check to the office, so I know it is paid but the woman in charge of the finances has waited to take 2 months rent at one time from my account on 3 other occasions. The current problem I have to deal with now. Who ever is in charge at the office has not cashed my October rent check. So my November bill shows I owe 2 months rent again.

Sugar Grove just seemed bright and cheery. I spoke to some of the residents, and I kind of liked everything that they said about it. Everyone seemed happy. The staff was very friendly and thorough. They have a garden, a patio, a library, and a salon. It felt homey. Overall, it was a pleasant tour experience.

My father has been in Sugar Grove for over a month now and so far it has been OK. The place is very nice, the staff is very friendly and helpful. My father has a studio, but they also have 1-bedroom apartments. They provide food service. They have happy hours, bingo, and movies. They have a fair amount of live music a couple of times a week, and they have at least one outing per week. They have a library, an exercise room, a billiard room, a beauty salon and a laundry. Everything is on one floor that they can use for free.

Sugar Grove was nice. The independent and assisted living were in the same building and the only difference would be the services you signed up to have. I walked into a big room and saw a fireplace, but nothing really stood out. It was clean, it wasn't completely finished, but it was nice. The only thing we didn't like was that when you walk out the back door, you had to go down the sidewalk to get to the parking places up front and it would have been too far for my mom to walk from her car to the door of her apartment. She wouldn't have had a use for the back door. Everyone seemed pleasant, the residents were happy, and it smelled fine with no odor.

Sugar Grove was very gorgeous and looked brand new. The location was good, which was kind of rural, so you don't have as much traffic. The person who did the interview seemed a little bit standoffish. She wasn't quite as warm compared to the other facilities I've been to, and they're on the higher side as far as price. The dining area was nice. Everything looked first rate appearance wise.

I moved into Sugar Grove and it's been great. The staff has been friendly. Every time I've had issues they've come to my rescue. They've gone above and beyond what I could have expected. They have a variety of rooms, the independent living has one- and two-bedrooms, and if a resident is not able to care for themselves or needs help, they can move across the way to the assisted living building. They have activities every day for the residents. Happy hour is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., and everybody is invited to come and gather and get to know each other. They have refreshments, card games, movies, and they have a beauty salon. They have a cafe where the menu is posted, and if you're not in the meal program you can go in and purchase food independently. The cost is comparable to other facilities that I've visited, but it has a lot of things included in it, like TV, WiFi, and maintenance. They do a very good job.

I visited and it impressed me. Everything is as good as the other places I've visited. The staff I got to interact with I would rate a four. The dining area is very nice, clean, and the chef was really friendly and accommodating. My aunt has Celiac and they said they would accommodate her special diet. The rooms were clean and presentable, and it was nice. They have the same type of activities offered as others, like games and crafts. The director who gave us the tour was very nice and accommodating. The memory care seemed a little colder to me, although it was very clean. But it seemed empty. I didn't get a warm feeling in there.

My mother is in assisted living at Brownsburg Meadows. She has her own bed, so the room is set up like an apartment. They also have another building for rehab and for long-term care. They have different areas. Everybody is very nice. They really don't have a lot of care; it is just that these are people who can't live by themselves. I'm happy with the place because they seem to be taking good care of my mother. She has had a couple of falls while she has been there, but it wasn't their fault. This place is very clean. They can take care of things that come up, e.g., if she gets sick, they will have someone see her. There was a flu going around last year, and they tried to keep that contamination down. They have lots of activities, like bingo. Whoever goes will get a small package of Kleenex. I have to encourage my mother to go there to get some interactions, otherwise she would just stay in her room with the lights off. Once a week, they have a bus for 12 people, and they take them to Wal-Mart or to the Dollar Store. So they do try to get them out. If someone is having a birthday, they will have some cakes and ice cream in the activity room. During the holiday, they will have small parties too. The staff members are friendly; they do their job. With my mom, she doesn't need too much help, but they will assist her in the morning, they will help her get out of bed or help her to the toilet. At night, if she is going to shower, they will stay in there with her because that's how she broke her rib (by falling in the shower).

My mother is moving into Sugar Grove. It's nice. The person who assisted me was Lindsey who is a rock star. She's awesome. They told us all the different things that they do. They have a nurse practitioner that's there two days a week, and on the other days they take trips on buses, they go out to eat, they may go to the grocery store to get toiletries or different things, or they may go somewhere special like the zoo or bowling. It's a good place. I would recommend it. I like that they accept pets. If you live there for 24 months and run out of money, then you can apply for Medicaid.
Map of Hendricks County, Indiana
Assisted Living Costs in Hendricks County
According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of assisted living in Hendricks County, Indiana, is $5,053, which makes it one of the most expensive areas in the state after Lafayette ($5,205). The capital region is moderately more expensive than Bloomington, Muncie and Evansville where monthly costs range from $4,483 to $4,800. Local assisted living costs are more than $1,000 above the national average of $4,000, and they’re 70% higher than Fort Wayne, which has the state’s lowest average rate at just $2,978 per month.
Note: Cost data wasn’t available for Hendricks County, so comparisons are based on survey responses from the Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson metropolitan area.
Care Cost Comparison
Hendricks County seniors who need part-time assistance or round-the-clock care will notice that the cost varies widely. Skilled nursing facilities are the most expensive option, but they provide a high level of care, including medical services. On the other end of the spectrum, adult day health care programs provide limited weekday assistance in a community-based setting, but monthly rates are typically much lower. The cost of a home health aide or homemaker is somewhere in the middle depending on whether the person provides personal assistance or performs light housekeeping. Another option is assisted living. Although it’s slightly more expensive than in-home care, it may offer a better value because the fee includes room and board, property maintenance and food in addition to personal assistance.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Hendricks County
Medicaid in Indiana
Indiana Medicaid is a state and federally funded health insurance program that offers essential services to children, senior citizens, disabled individuals and low-income adults in Hendricks County. It covers everything from preventive care and prescription drugs to hospital stays and nursing home services. In some cases, waiver programs also include the cost of personal assistance provided at home or in an assisted living facility. Medicaid encompasses several programs that serve different target populations and have separate eligibility requirements.
Hoosier Care Connect covers individuals who are aged, blind, disabled or receive Supplemental Security Income. It serves those who don’t qualify for Medicare. The income limit for this entitlement program is $1,041 per month for individuals or $1,409 for couples. The asset limit is $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 if both spouses apply.
Traditional Medicaid serves medically needy children and adults. It provides full health care coverage and an assortment of optional benefits to individuals who live in a nursing home or are eligible for home- and community-based waiver services. Dual Medicare/Medicaid qualification is permitted, but there are medical and financial eligibility requirements:
- The monthly income limit is $2,313 per month, per spouse.
- The asset limit is $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for joint applicants.
- Individuals must live in a nursing home or require assistance with three daily activities.
Hendricks County seniors can learn more online, in person or by phone. To begin the application process, they can visit the Family and Social Services Administration’s benefits portal, call the Division of Family Resources at (800) 403-0864 or stop by the Hendricks County DFR office on East Main Street in Plainfield.
Aged and Disabled Waiver
Federal regulations require states to offer Medicaid coverage to nursing home residents. Indiana’s Aged and Disabled waiver is open to seniors who qualify for traditional Medicaid but prefer to receive services outside a nursing home. In addition to financial requirements, applicants must need assistance with at least three activities of daily living as determined by an independent assessment. There’s a waiting list, but once approved, seniors may receive a full array of services, including the following:
- Adult day services
- Personal attendants
- Homemaker services
- Case management
- Delivered meals
- Transportation
- Respite care
The A&D waiver doesn’t cover room and board. Hendricks County seniors can apply for benefits or learn more about this program by contacting CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions, Central Indiana’s Area Agency on Aging, at (317) 254-5465.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
VA Pension Benefits
Veterans and surviving spouses who have substantial medical needs or require personal assistance on a daily basis may qualify for supplemental Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits. Even individuals who don’t qualify for a military pension due to excess income can access benefits through one of these programs. These funds can be used to pay for assisted living fees, medical bills and other expenses.
- Housebound provides an extra pension payment to veterans and survivors who are confined to their homes due to a permanent disability.
- A&A assists those who are bedridden, require assistance with activities of daily living, reside in a nursing home or suffer from severe vision impairments.
For more details, seniors can contact the VA Indianapolis Regional Office by calling (800) 827-1000. Applications may also be mailed to the state’s Pension Management Center. Medical reports are required along with specific application forms.
Bridge Loans
Short-term bridge loans help to cover funding gaps of 12 months or less that occur when individuals transition into assisted living. These financial products are ideal for seniors who own their own home and need to access part of their equity to cover assisted living fees and move-in expenses. Bridge loans can also provide temporary funding while seniors apply for government benefits or submit an appeal.
Funds are typically available within 24 hours, so seniors don’t have to wait for their home to sell to access the cash. Elderlife accepts multiple cosigners, and funds are available as a lump sum or line of credit.
For more information, contact Elderlife Financial Services by calling (888) 228-4500.
Residential Care Assistance Program
Hendricks County residents who are aged, blind or disabled and qualify for Hoosier Care Connect may be eligible for additional benefits through Indiana’s Residential Care Assistance Program. SSI recipients may also qualify for benefits. Eligible individuals must live in a licensed residential care facility that has an active RCAP contract with the FSSA. The program provides a daily stipend directly to the assisted living facility. These funds offset the cost of room, board, laundry and care coordination. Indiana also offers a nominal personal needs allowance. Assisted living facilities are responsible for submitting benefit applications. Seniors can contact an RCAP-participating community for more information.
Senior Centers
Senior centers organize social and recreational programs that help older residents live safely, happily and independently. Hendricks County Senior Services offers daily lunches, fitness classes and a full calendar of activities ranging from wood carving to free cholesterol screenings.
