I'm at Southpointe Healthcare Center. We don't have rooms like in the assisted living. It's basically 100% care here, and they have nurses on-duty. It's pretty much like a nursing home, and I'm here for long-term care and rehab. Due to my stroke, it kind of took away my ability to walk. They say I will walk again with proper therapy, but they don't have a timeframe on it. The rooms have a flatscreen TV, a small closet for clothing, a dresser and drawer, and a nightstand with two drawers, so it's not very big. There are at least 25 rooms on my wing, but they have three different wings. They serve our meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they have snacks available. They provide non-refrigerated items like chips or something like that, and they provide drinks like soft drinks, and coffee in the morning. They take care of your medication, and they assist with getting out of bed, and showers two times a week. They have on-site therapy, a beautician on-duty, and there's a bathroom in our room with a mirror. The occupational therapist helps me pretty much to shave, and the CNAs assist you with bathing twice a week. We have fun activities, card games, and bingo. There's a big screen TV, and they allow us to congregate in the dining hall and watch different movies, but we've been quarantined to our rooms for the last month. They also stated that there were zero cases of Corona patients here. They're giving us the nasal swab testing twice a week. They're pretty adamant about keeping it to where it is, and we don't allow visitors right now. It's a beautiful place, clean, and nice. The food is pretty much what you can expect. It's like a hospital setting in here. I'm only 55 now, and this is not how I want to live even if it's not long term. If there was a senior assisted living apartment community situation here, I would stay. It's not bad, it's just to my mental therapy, I'd like to be in a more home setting. There's a skeleton crew as far as CNAs and QMAs, but other than that, the quality of care is above average. There aren't enough people to answer all the call lights in an expediate manner. Other than that, if they had full staff, this place would be rated a 5/5. I don't have anything bad to say about it. The staff is very respectful, cordial, understanding, and patient with you, but we have to be patient with them too because they don't have full staff to answer everybody's call light in a fast manner. They don't really season the food here because they have lots of people with hypertension and diabetes. The food is good, but it could be a little bit better. It's easily accessible, the lawn is kept up to par, and there's no trash on the parking lot or on the grass areas, It's well maintained.

We visited The Harrison. The exterior could use a little sprucing, but the inside was fine. It's an older facility, but it's being kept up well. The residents seemed happy and content. The gentleman who gave me the tour did a good job and answered all the questions I had and concerns. The room was older designed. They worked on some trying to modify it and keeping it updated.

Traditions at North Willow was not as nice as the others we looked at, but they're pretty clean, pleasant, and pretty comfortable. The rooms were clean and a little bit larger. It looked older, but it was less expensive than the other ones.

I was a resident of Traditions at Solana's assisted living while my husband was in the memory care. The appearance of the community was very nice, and it was very nice inside and everything. They were near a small lake and they were very good at having things outside that you can set up on different lawns and patios; it was very nice. They had an independent section which were small cottages that went down a long street that's connected with them. I stayed there before moving into the assisted living. They didn't list it as independent, but they allow you to move in and pay less than assisted living. They have new directors now. There were no issues while I was there, and I didn't use a nursing aide. If I needed someone, they were there right away to help you. And that's the one thing that I miss compared to my current community. They had excellent activities and things during the day, like different ladies groups for braiding hats or doing jewelry. There was a van that has a nurse driver that drove people where they wanted to go. The food was good and it had a nice dining room, but the food was not always what you wanted; but I guess it's like that everywhere. The place was good and it was clean. The only thing was that they used to take Medicaid but that changed with the new directors and everything, so they stopped giving out Medicaid for new patients. It's not the cheapest game in town.

I enjoyed the Greenbriar Village and the people. The staff gave us a lot of information. I liked the fact that they separated the more highly functional residents. They had an outdoor area where they could go, but my father was more highly functioning upstairs and didnt have much access to the outside. I enjoyed all the staff; they were all very friendly, very knowledgeable, and answered all our questions. The facility was clean, but the rooms were semi-private, it shared a bathroom, and had a curtain that separated the two residents. They had a barber and beauty shop that they could go to. They coordinated with the doctors visit and had them come in, so you wouldnt have to take them out every time they needed to see someone. They gave us a calendar of activities that the activity director does with the residents.

I enjoyed my visit to the Wellington at Southport. It was a more laid-back, smaller facility which I liked, and you got more interaction with the staff. I liked that they had a nice, large outdoor area for them to congregate. They had a good calendar of different activities that they do. They said they get volunteers that come in and help out as well, and I enjoyed that too. As family, we could volunteer and come into the facility. The staff we saw was friendly. I liked the rooms better because they were more private and had their own private bathrooms. It was close to the highway, but the rooms were very quiet.

My mother-in-law is at Greenbriar Village. The care that they provide is pretty good. They have several things going on every day. The staff is very nice to her. I've eaten there with her several times, and the food is good.

I toured Five Star Residences of Clearwater. We didnt like it because the staff that was there was only temporary, and their occupancy was pretty low. I didnt like the location either. It was our least favorite place, and the nurse was strange. The dining area was OK, and there was something they were cleaning off the floor. It looked disheveled.

Rosegate Assisted Living and Garden Homes was clean and nice. I liked that the fact that they were a husband and wife team, both retired doctors, and they were there in this facility themselves. It made me feel pretty good to think that out of all the places they could have gone, they chose this one as well. Medical-wise, it just felt like there was more access to medical needs and rehab facility. The lady who helped me with the tour was fantastic, wonderful, knowledgeable, patient, and spent a lot of time with me. She did a very nice job with the tour.

Care Cost Comparison
As shown in the Cost of Assisted Living comparison chart, location can greatly influence the cost of senior care. Another major factor is the type of care required. In Indianapolis, the cost of skilled nursing care averages nearly $2,000 more per month than assisted living. When comparing assisted living with home care, home care appears to be significantly less expensive (about $700 to $1,200 less a month). However, it’s important to consider what kind of home care services are needed: homemaker services, home health aide services or both. It’s also necessary to weigh other costs related to staying in your home, including rent or mortgage payments, general maintenance and unexpected repairs. The cost of assisted living generally includes most of these expenses. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

- Homemaker services: $3,813

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Indianapolis
Medicaid in Indiana
Low-income residents of Indianapolis may qualify for medical assistance through Indiana Medicaid. This traditional Medicaid program provides a variety of benefits such as home health care and nursing facility services. Financial support is also available for other long-term care options, including assisted living, through Indiana’s Aged and Disabled Medicaid Waiver listed below.
Medicaid services are available to low-income seniors in Indianapolis with incomes under $1,041 per month for an individual or couple, and a maximum of $2,000 (single) or $3,000 (couple) in assets. Assets may include bank account balances, cash on hand, stocks and bonds and property other than your home. There may be the option to pay a monthly patient liability if your income or assets are above the state limits.
To sign up for Medicaid, you can fill out the Indiana Application for Health Coverage online or call 1-800-403-0864. To apply in person, visit your local Division of Family Resources office.
Indiana Aged and Disabled Waiver
Residents of Indianapolis looking for financial support for assisted living may qualify for Medicaid’s Aged and Disabled waiver. The A&D waiver provides an alternative to nursing home admission and covers services in certain Medicaid-approved assisted living facilities. The D&A waiver is not an entitlement program, and waiting lists are common.
In order to qualify for assisted living services under the A&D waiver, residents of Indianapolis must be willing to live in a Medicaid-approved assisted living facility, have a monthly income of $2,313 or less and countable assets of no more than $2,000. Participants must also be assessed and found to need at least the level of care provided in nursing homes, which is assistance with three or more activities of daily living.
For more information about the Aged and Disabled waiver, contact the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration at 1-800-457-8283. Live chat help is also available on the website.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Indiana Residential Care Assistance Program
Residents of Indianapolis who cannot live alone but don’t need skilled nursing care may qualify for financial assistance through the state’s Residential Care Assistance Program. RCAP funds can cover room and board, food, laundry and select services such as care coordination in contracted assisted living facilities.
To qualify for RCAP, Indianapolis residents must be at least 65 years of age or blind or disabled and a current Medicaid recipient or participant in the federal Supplemental Security Income program. They must also be willing to move to an Indiana assisted living facility that has an approved RCAP contract with the Division of Aging.
Typically, RCAP facilities help applicants complete the eligibility process. However, an applicant’s family, guardian or advocate may also complete the RCAP application, which is available online.
For more information about the Indiana Residential Care Assistance Program, contact the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration at 1-800-457-8283. Live chat help is also available on the website.
