Riderwood offers three different levels of care. It has a meal plan and activities. I was very impressed. I thought it was an excellent facility. I went to their introductory programs two years ago, but since then I have visited two different friends who lived there in Riderwood, and they have been happy there. The food was excellent. It's very nice. They have an exercise room, a swimming pool, an area where you can have a garden plot for people who like to garden, and lots of programs.

Riderwood Senior Living Community is a large facility. It has 2000 residents, so it's quite massive, but it still had a good feel to it. It still had a very upscale, modern look and feel. They were extremely friendly and even the residents were friendly. They greeted you and said hello. They had all the bells and whistles of an upscale place. They had independent, assisted living and everything, but we just looked at the independent living. They had an entrance fee, which is 90% refundable, but it's still cost prohibitive. For instance, a 1-bedroom that had a 1-1/2 bath and 954 square feet, was from $293,000 to $326,000. It's 90% refundable when you leave and that one started at $2698 a month. The other thing is every year, this goes up by 3%. They had every single amenity you would ask for or want to know about, e.g., utilities, fitness centers, art studios, medical centers, salon and spas, pharmacies, computer labs, banks, and convenience stores. The dining rooms are closed, so the food is brought to them or they can pick it up.

My mother-in-law is in the independent living level of Riderwood. We're happy with her care over there. She lost her husband last year, but she's doing good there. They have basic apartments and all kinds of activities. You have access to nurse care and assistance if you need it. They have a dining room, a cafeteria, and lots of other amenities there. They do different crafts, there's a wood shop there, bridge club, book clubs, and religious activities.

B'nai B'rith Homecrest House has activities going on every day. Lunch is included and you can also get dinner. They have shared a TV room and an art room. The dining room is gorgeous. The place is very nice. It has a bit of age to it, but it is very clean, and much smaller in terms of how many people it can hold. It feels homey, too. They have a beauty salon and there is a van that takes them to the store during the day.

Sunrise of Silver Spring was nice and the girl was very helpful. She showed me what the apartment would look like and how much it would cost. She even followed up with me about what I needed to do. They were playing cards, exercising, and going on walks, they had a movie day, and they played bingo. They have a library, an exercise room, and they even go on trips to theaters. They had everything my daughter-in-law would need to keep her busy and keep her interested. The staff was wonderful, very well educated, and organized. If ever I get in that position, it would be a place that I would like to go to.

Aspenwood Senior Living Community had everything. They have activities for them. They even go to New York sometimes and spent stay overnight to see a Broadway show. They set up a table for me to have lunch with them. I went to the apartment to see one lady and she didn't come for lunch. They have a way of enticing them to get up and come. On the way, they stopped at the medicine place and made sure that the person received their medicine. They also picked up a trash can and took that out. I was really impressed with the type of service they were providing. It's a little more upscale, but it costs a little more. They take the people to the doctor, and they have a nurse on duty. They offer assisted living, independent living, and there's a facility for people with special needs. You can transition from one to the other.

Genesis Healthcare was recommended by our medical insurance. The place is clean, but the help is not so good. You might find one person who'd really ambitious about taking care of the patients, but the rest of the nursing staff is lazy. They need to raise morale for the patients as most of the patients just sit in their wheelchairs and stare out the window. It’s not cheerful.

My Dad's lived there almost 20 yrs. When I noticed my parents were having a hard time climbing stairs, my Mom couldn't cook like she used and they have nogut lyrics dinners in a clean, white table cloths n real dishware, I knew this was good. And it turned out a blessing. My mom passed 13 yrs ago and my Dad wasn't alone. He had the comfort and support of all the other residents. My dad will be 92 next month and thanks to Homecrest and their reliable staff he continues to enjoy life, one day at a time in his own apartment.

The staff we met with at Sunrise of Silver Spring was very nice and very professional. The facilities were well-maintained. The rooms were nice, but they were a little bit smaller. While we were there, there was a community meeting going on, so a lot of the residents were in the common room talking about community issues. The price was right in line with everybody else that we visited. I would definitely recommend it. It's worth looking at certainly.
