My mom was in Gurwin Rehabilitation in 2019 after breaking her hip. She was also dying from lung cancer and COPD. My mom received excellent compassionate care from all staff. The doctors, social worker and nurses were easily accessible and helpful. The PT Department were excellent. The facility was always very clean. Mom only complained about the food not being up to her standard. When we realized my mom needed hospice, the social worker and doctors were very compassionate and helped me to make all the arrangements to bring her home with hospice care so she could die in peace with her family surrounding her. Gurwin is the best and I give it a 5 star rating.

I visited my brother-in-law in Sunrise of Holbrook at the assisted living. It's basically a building with lots of senior citizens who need assistance. The room was clean. They were very respectful and very nice. It had a TV/lounge area, and they play games. It's all in this one building. They have a walking area and a place where you can have picnics. It was very clean, good, and sanitized.

My father was at Atria Hertlin Place. Their food and activities were excellent. The facility was beautiful, too. The only thing was, they had a water issue for a month. It was on and off, and my dad was not getting hot water in his shower or sink. They didn't even reduce the rent. They suggested moving him to another room, but he has Alzheimer's. I don't want to move him to another room and back because it might confuse him even more. I was a little upset with that situation. They have activities like shopping, movie nights, bingo nights, and dinners where they would dress up and have live music. They also have crafts, gardening, and an exercise room. They had excellent facilities. I know the hot-water issue was something internally with the building itself, and they had someone looking at it, so I don't really blame them. I get it, things happen, but the management could have been a little bit more understanding. We could have taken him to go get a shower at other places or take him to my house. They should have discounted his rent or done something to compensate for that. It was inconvenient.

My father used Right at Home Eastern Long Island. They provided light housekeeping, meals, and medication reminders. He has dementia and he has a good deal of suspicion about people in the house. Many times he would send them packing because he didn't want people in the house and didn't want to accept any help, but I personally liked them. They did a good job, and they did what they were supposed to do. Communication with the agency was very good. The coordinator would try very hard to keep me up-to-date, but there was confusion sometimes.

We're using Right at Home Eastern Long Island for my mother. They drive her, take her to appointments, and do light housekeeping. The caregivers are caring, responsible, and there's excellent communication. I'm a satisfied client.

Birchwood Suites was nice but it was far away from me so I didn't choose my mom to go there. They showed me a semi-private unit, a large bedroom with two beds and two drawers. The dining room was kind of in an L-shape. They all ate the same meal; there was no picking off the menu. They had tablecloths on the table. They said that whenever all are done eating, after that they would bring them into the activities room and the director was there. The activities room was nice, big and bright. If they weren't interested in doing the activities, they could sit in a room and watch TV. The grounds were very nice.

Birchwood Suites is a smaller facility than the one my mother was in prior to this. They have a good amount of activities, an activity room, a music room, piano, TV rooms, crafts, and bingo. Her room has two twin beds, it's very clean, and the bathroom is very modern and clean. It has no carpeting and no tripping hazards. She said the food is pretty good, but there's not a lot of choices. Everybody that I've met has been very outgoing. It's a very clean place and much bigger than it looks.

The Arbors Hauppauge was OK for the first few years that Mom was there, but they didn't have enough staff members to handle the level of care that she needed, especially as she aged. They had a good amount of activities, entertainment, and live music during holidays. I didn't care for the room. It was a lot smaller than the one that she's in now. They didn't take very good care of the room and they didn't take good care of the laundry. They also didn't very efficiently clean the room at all. I had to ask them several times to shampoo the carpets. The food was very good, and they gave them a variety of options. Some of the staff members were very good and some were not. They just went through a renovation, so it's pretty good, and they're still doing other things to the facility. The room itself was not great, but they redid the common areas.

Elder Home Care has been absolutely wonderful. They care about my father and give me aides who care about my dad. If there's any problem, they switch them up right away. They do everything like bathing, helping him shave, dress, walk, go to the bathroom, cooking, and cleaning for him. I got them from April to now. I would highly recommend them. They've been very easy to deal with. When I contact them for any request I have, they immediately call me back. There's always someone to talk to, and they've always been polite. They try to match the aide with the client. They're a lot less expensive than others.
