My father moved into Bickford of West Lansing, and we were very pleased with it. The move-in was smooth; they even helped us set his bed up. Their community has a big van and it went to pick up his bed from the other community he's moving in from. They're super friendly, all the caregivers took the time to talk to him and they know their names and our names. We're extremely impressed. He has done exercise, the men's luncheon, Halloween party, and watching the football game with the guys. They have a bus and do outings also. The grounds are gorgeous, you walk into a big porch that's decorated with rockers, chairs, and pillows, and we've watched the grass being always cut and trimmed. It's just beautiful outside. In terms of pricing everything was spilled right up front, there were no secrets and each room size has a price. They have a scale of care, and my dad ended up in level two. If he starts going higher, we can start doing his laundry and his room cleaning to keep him in that level longer by taking some of those functions on the family. So we're really pleased with the way they operated, it was all upfront. The staff is amazing. They take time in making sure that they live by their mission statement and make sure the people are happy and living by the moment.

Brookdale Delta was very nice and appeared to be very well run. I was impressed with the people. Everything was nice. The person who assisted me was excellent. The dining area looked nice. People were eating at the time we went through, and it looked good. It's expensive, but I think the people do a very nice job.

It was very clean and the staff was very friendly. Knowing that my mom has three well-balanced meals a day makes me feel comfortable. They also have activities for the residents. They go on trips, and they take them around the facility sometimes. They're really a great community, I'm really pleased with them. The place itself is very clean. For what level she's at, they provide housekeeping and laundry as well.

My husband moved into Brookdale Delta last month. I liked the place, and the staff, but I think they're understaffed. He doesn't get as much attention as I would like him to have, but they're working on it. There are things I need to keep reminding them to do. They have activities almost every day, like Bingo, chair exercises, and happy hour with wine and cheese. They have excursions.

I visited Bickford, the manager took me on a tour, and showed me different events that they do. Somebody was playing keyboard, singing, and he told me about the food, and showed me the dining room, private rooms, and showers. It was too large for my husband, and I was afraid he would be lost.

Bickford of West Lansing was in the midst of remodeling. Their rooms were small and they didn't have kitchenettes, but the grounds were gorgeous. The executive staff and the marketing person were very nice. They were both wonderful.

My husband is here. It's a very caring and attentive community. My husband socialized very quickly, and he has some folks that he had activities with on a regular basis. They did a marvelous job in getting him acquainted with what was available and participating. His room is newly remodeled, and it is barrier-free handicapped accessible.

Care Cost Comparison
The biggest factor affecting the cost of senior care in Lansing is the type of care that a senior requires. At an average of $9,034 per month, nursing home care is more than twice the price of assisted living care, according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study. In-home care services, including homemaker services and home health aides, are priced similarly to assisted living care. However, seniors must also consider other costs involved with remaining in their homes, including rent and maintenance. The city’s lowest-cost type of care, adult day health care, is about half the price of assisted living care. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Lansing
Medicaid in Michigan
Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that provides health coverage to low-income adults, people with disabilities, elderly adults and other eligible people. States are required to cover certain services in their Medicaid plans, including doctor visits, hospital visits, home health services, nursing facility services and transportation to medical care. Michigan Medicaid covers many additional medical services, such as optometry, podiatry and mental health care.
To qualify for the Michigan Medicaid health care program, seniors must meet various eligibility requirements. They must be U.S. nationals, U.S. citizens or permanent residents who reside in Michigan. In addition, seniors need to meet the program’s financial requirements. The income limit for a single senior is $16,146 per year, while the limit for couples is $21,892.
Seniors who are interested in receiving Medicaid coverage can apply through MI Bridges, Michigan’s online application portal. The state also accepts paper applications for health coverage. Paper applications can be mailed to:
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services
Health Insurance Affordability Program
PO Box 8123
Royal Oak, MI 48068
Seniors who need help applying for Medicaid can call the state’s Medicaid Helpline at (855) 276-4627.
Lansing seniors who need help paying for assisted living care may be eligible to receive assistance through the MI Choice Waiver program. Michigan Medicaid runs this program, but it is not an entitlement, and there is a waiting list. Seniors accepted into this program can receive Medicaid-covered services in an assisted living facility or in their own home. Covered services include nursing services, nonmedical transportation, chore services, medical supplies and counseling.
For more information about the MI Choice Waiver program, seniors can call the Tri-County Office on Aging at (517) 887-1440. Since there is a waiting list for this program, interested seniors should apply as soon as possible.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
PACE
Seniors in Lansing may be able to receive assistance through the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. While this program doesn’t pay for room and board in assisted living facilities, it does provide all services that are covered by Medicaid and Medicare. This includes nursing facility services if they’re medically necessary.
To be eligible for this program, seniors must be 55 years or older. They must have a medical need for the level of care provided by nursing homes but be able to safely live in an assisted living facility or elsewhere in the community. Seniors already enrolled in a Health Maintenance Organization or the MI Choice Waiver program aren’t eligible.
To apply for assistance from PACE, Lansing seniors can contact their local PACE provider, VOANS Senior Community Care of Michigan. This provider is located at 1921 E Miller Road in Lansing. Seniors can also call the provider at (517) 319-0700.
Optional State Supplement
Michigan provides an Optional State Supplement to seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income and live in an assisted living facility. This cash assistance can help seniors pay for the costs of room and board. Single seniors who reside in assisted living facilities can receive a maximum supplement of $179.30 per month, while couples can get up to $743.60. Seniors who have countable income may receive a lower monthly supplement.
Seniors are eligible for SSI if they are 65 years or older and meet certain financial requirements. Resources, which include assets such as cash, land and vehicles, are capped at $2,000 for a single senior and $3,000 for a couple. Seniors must also have a low income to receive benefits. The maximum SSI federal benefit rate is $750 per month, and a senior’s countable income is subtracted from the maximum benefit to determine their payment. A senior who earns $750 or more per month in countable income is not eligible to receive payments. Many types of income aren’t considered countable income for SSI purposes, so seniors who think they do not meet the financial requirements may still qualify.
Seniors who want to apply for SSI, or who already receive SSI but are interested in optional state supplementation, can contact the U.S. Social Security Administration. The Lansing SSA office is located at 5210 Perry Robinson Circle and can be reached by phone at 1 (877) 512-5944.
