The facility is nice, but the company seems unable to manage anything appropriately. They got a new pharmacy and are charging residents extra if they don't use it. Medications are not delivered timely, scripts are lost completely and it's more expensive than the old company. They are filling most of the caregiver positions through an agency and most of the previous staff, the ones who actually got to know residents and cared about their welfare are gone. Some of the agency people are rough with residents and have been overheard yelling and swearing at them. My own family member is afraid of some of them. They are lax in resident care, rooms smell of urine, showers are given without using soap or shampoo, sheets go unchanged for weeks, special diets are not followed and unexplained wounds go untreated unless your family member has an outside nurse come in and monitor the care. Your family member would be better off literally anywhere else.

This facility has gone downhill in the past year, since this facility was sold to an out-of-state company. There is a staff shortage, constant turnover and minimal training. The best caregivers often leave.

I had to go and take my sister out after only a day. They let her run out of oxygen and did not answer call bell. I had to call and the desk clerk had to run up there to get her help. They did not give her meds correctly if at all. She ran out of oxygen 4 times in the first 12 hours. My sister called me because they just ignored her call bell. They also told her very rudely she would stay there as long as insurance paid. I would not send my worst enemy there. Also the staff, except Natasha(desk clerk) were rude and stood around complaining about how much they hate their job. I am praying for the people in there who have no one to see about them. Beware of this facility. I also reported them to the appropriate authorities.

My mom is moving into The Arbor Inn. It's centrally located for all of us children, so it would be best to have her closer to home. The director took me around for a visit personally. Of course we had to wear a mask, check our temperature, and everything. I like that it's a smaller place, it's family-owned, it's only one floor, and for the price we're gonna get a lot more than her other place. She's in need of more care for her health and safety, and I think that this place is going to give that to her. The staff is very friendly, very caring, very knowledgeable, and definitely took an interest in our situation. They asked a lot of questions to see if my mom is gonna be a good fit. Everything's included in the price; the only thing she's gonna pay for is her phone bill. They'll check on her round-the-clock, she won't be left alone, they'll take her in the dining room, which isn't very far, and they have the whole thing like the barber shop, the TV room, rec room, and the library. She's got a lot of places that she can go and it's all on one floor; no elevators. I was shown what the daily menu would look like; it's up on a board there. It was very nice, very clean, with no smell.

My mother moved into Shorehaven last October. It's nice, and it's clean, but we haven't been there very much because of COVID. I go in because I'm considered her caretaker. They take my temperature, I fill out a form, and then I'm able to go see her. In the past two weeks, they've just been able to go to the dining room and have some activities reinstated, but so far, so good. She has a very nice room, the cost is very reasonable, and the housekeeping is really good. She has a room that looks out on the water, and she's had no complaints. The staff is very friendly and available. They have a beauty salon, exercise classes, and a computer room where they teach the residents to use the computer. There are paths and a walking trail, they're directly across from a large mall (Lakeside Mall), and they have a big patio where they have an outside bar for drinks and social dancing. She says the food is very good, and it's been better since she has been able to go to the dining room.

We went to Pine Ridge Villas of Shelby. I saw the whole place, but I wasn't crazy about the layout of the apartment. The location is probably very good for my family, and it's convenient for my family. It's nice, the activities, the food, and all that.

We went to the property, Diana came out, then we watched on our phone, the nurse, she came out, and gave us information, and another girl that worked there, they came out and met us by the front door, they gave us a lot of information, and we had our phone, and watched the tour on our phones. They were very good, they answered all of our questions, they made us feel a lot better, because my father was not used to being alone. They called me the next week to tell me that some of the rules had changed, and in the next week or so they would be reopening the dining room which would give more things for the people to do, and more activities. They also told us as far as meeting our father outside a couple of times a week, I told them I was his caregiver for 15 years, and they knew I was taking him to the primary care doctor. They said the doctor could also give us a letter saying my father needed a compassion visit for his mental state from a family member or because you're his caregiver, to come in like once a week for a half hour, assist him with something, just so that would make the transition easier, and that meant the world. That made a big difference with us. We got that in the back of our mind, because they were very nice and accommodating.

We toured Shorehaven. It was an in-person tour. I thought the place was beautiful. I liked the dark wood that they had around it. It looked like it had a lot of amenities. The apartments were a little older looking inside, but they were still nice. It was a nice-looking place. The lady that took us on a tour was great. She was very personable, and she was friendly. She has worked there and has a lot of knowledge of the place. The staff was good. My mom didn't like it. She thought it was dark and dreary, but that's because she's not into that look. I thought it was nice and elegant.

My mother's past experience with Father Murray Nursing Center was terrible. They were understaffed, poor conditions, and the hallways were lined with equipment. If there's ever a fire, everyone will die. The staff was overworked and underpaid. We're completely dissatisfied. The food was not bad. But they could have improved the communication with the families and improve the staff to patient ratio. What's good about this place was that they serve hot food.
Map of Macomb County, Michigan
Assisted Living Costs in Macomb County
According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, while Macomb County’s average monthly assisted living costs exceed both the state and national average by several hundred dollars, they fall in the midrange for this region of Michigan. With expenses averaging just under $4,000 a month, care in nearby Flint and Jackson is slightly less costly than in Macomb County, while services in Ann Arbor, Monroe and the Lansing area, which houses the state capital, cost a minimum of $250 more.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Macomb County specifically, so data for the overlapping Detroit area was used.
Care Cost Comparison
Costs for senior care services in Macomb County vary widely by type. Nursing home expenses are nearly double those of assisted living, while adult day health services are substantially less costly. In-home care, including homemaker services and home health aides, cost $200 to $300 more per month than assisted living, although the expenses for these programs can fluctuate depending upon how many hours of care are needed. When researching the costs of in-home services, seniors should factor in expenses associated with staying in their house, including mortgage or rent, HOA fees, utilities and general upkeep.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Macomb County
Medicaid in Michigan
Serving low-income state residents, Michigan’s Medicaid program provides comprehensive health care benefits such as annual preventative health exams, general physician visits, emergency care, mental health services, inpatient hospital care, and transportation to medical appointments.
The program sets specific income and asset requirements to determine eligibility. For individuals, monthly income must not exceed $1,041 with $2,000 in assets. For married applicants with both spouses applying, monthly income must not exceed $1,409 with $3,000 in assets. Married couples with only one spouse applying should refer to individual income and asset limits. While Medicaid counts all sources of income, certain assets are excluded, including an individual’s home, car, personal possessions and irrevocable burial trusts.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website offers additional information on eligibility and benefits. People who are ready to apply can do so online at MI Bridges. To speak with someone directly about the program, seniors can call one of Macomb County’s MDHHS offices at (586) 469-7700, (586) 254-1500 or (586) 427-0600.
MI Choice Waiver
The MI Choice waiver dispenses funds for senior care services in their home or at an assisted living facility, providing an alternative for Michigan seniors aged 65 and older who demonstrate a medical or functional need for a nursing home level of care but who would prefer to live more independently. Medicaid-eligible seniors may qualify to receive personal care, skilled nursing services, counseling, emergency response systems and medical supplies that are nonreimbursable under Medicaid. Care coordination may also be provided.
To learn more about the MI Choice waiver, area seniors can contact Macomb’s Area Agency on Aging 1B at (248) 357-2255 or Macomb-Oakland Regional Center Home Care, Inc. at (586) 263-8953.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
Area seniors choosing at-home or assisted living care rather than a nursing facility may qualify to receive social and medical services through PACE Southeast Michigan. Macomb County residents aged 55 and older who meet Michigan state requirements for nursing home care may be eligible for preventative care and comprehensive support services through this program. Seniors must be able to live safely in a residential community setting with support in order to qualify for the program. A trained eldercare team works with eligible applicants to develop a personalized care plan, which may include personal care, registered nurse services and prescribed medications.
Seniors don’t need to be Medicaid-eligible for this program and can pay privately for the portion of the premium that Medicaid would normally cover. Applicants who qualify for Medicare and Medicaid don’t pay out-of-pocket costs. Seniors who receive the MI Choice waiver are not eligible for this program.
To find out more about benefits and eligibility requirements, seniors can speak to one of PACE Southeast Michigan’s eldercare representatives at (855) 445-4554 or fill out a contact form on the website.
Optional State Supplementation
Federal SSI recipients may qualify to receive an additional monthly supplement through the Michigan Department of Human Services’ OSS benefit. Depending on the recipient’s marital status and living situation, the benefit can range between $14 and $685 per month, and it’s added directly to the recipient’s federal payment.
To learn more or to apply for the OSS benefit, area residents can contact Macomb County’s Social Security Administration office in Sterling Heights at (800) 772-1213.
VA Aid and Attendance
Veterans aged 65 and older with a VA pension may be eligible for the federal Aid and Attendance program, which provides funds intended to offset the costs of assisted living. To qualify, veterans must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Need assistance performing daily care activities, such as bathing or grooming
- Be confined to bed (not including short-term convalescence)
- Have limited vision (5/200 in both eyes after correction or concentric contraction to 5 degrees or less of the visual field)
A detailed physician’s report is required when applying.
Surviving spouses may also qualify for this assistance. Veterans enrolled in the VA Housebound program or those receiving a VA disability pension are not eligible to receive Aid and Attendance funds.
Income limits also apply, but the VA has a complex means of determining countable income, so interested individuals should seek guidance from their local vet center or benefits office. For more information or to apply, veterans should call the Detroit Regional Benefit Office at (800) 827-1000.
Senior Activity Centers
Macomb County senior activity centers provide socialization and recreational opportunities to area elders through a variety of wellness, educational and cultural programs and special events. Most area centers have fitness programs, including walking clubs and chair exercise.
