We like Belmar Oakland. They're good, but my father is hard to get along with. They have all kinds of activities, but he stays in bed all day. His room is clean and they do his laundry. The staff is very patient with him.

My mother was in rehab at Heartland Health Care Center - Oakland for nine days. It was horrible. The staff was very apathetic for the most part. She would push her buzzer and they would come turn it off and not take care of her. She needed her shoes for therapy and they didn't want to put her shoes on; they just put socks on her. The food made her throw up it was so bad. It was a terrible place. Her room was a little dark and depressing and the furniture was old. It wasn't very attractive and was a shared room. There were two people in it. There was a little courtyard, which wasn't bad, and they had bingo. Some staff were nice, and some were lazy. They had a library and a wi-fi place. It's not a very good value.

They did a fine job at Sunrise of Troy. I was impressed with the director who spent quite a bit of time talking to us about their philosophy of care. The accommodations, however, were very small and more designed for an individual than a couple. I wouldn't have hesitated to place my parents there if they had an apartment that would have accommodated two people.

It was very hospital-like and didn't have a homey feeling. It felt kind of sterile, but it was clean and the staff was fine. They've been open for a year but they'd had trouble filling all of their apartments, so that was concerning to me. They didn't have a lot available for a couple and the person whom I met there didn't seem to have much information.
