From the beginning the staff was never available. When they were they were antagonistic and unprofessional. They come in your apartment all hours if they day and night without knocking. The manager uses gas lighting techniques to accuse you of being a nuisance tenant so she can evict you. No help from housing or the management company. If you enjoy your freedom and security i do not recommend this place.

Ok size, dirty, not cleaned consistently, old and far away from activities. Too many people to feed so it’s always a wait for food, then it’s cold. Not enough employees. Pool Always broke and cold water. Don’t expect to get in to visit always as not enough people to check you in. Place not kept up over the years so by the time new owners get it looking good again it will be years. Doesn’t feel safe so close to Detroit.

Our mother was a resident at Independent Village of Plymouth for 5 years. While there, she enjoyed a warm and welcoming christian atmosphere, comfortable facilities, exercise class and a wide variety of social activities throughout the year. Mom was also blessed to have friendly, supportive \"neighbors\" surrounding her. She was able to transition from \"independent\" to \"assisted\" living all while remaining in the same familiar room. Administration and staff went above and beyond in making all residents comfortable, giving them attention, dignity and friendship all while caring about the details of their daily lives! We are grateful our mom was able to receive the care and personal attention she needed during her stay at IVP.

My mother has been there almost a year and is choosing to move. Everything went downhill. Short staffed, dirty, dining room closed for half of the facility for a period of time, forcing them to eat out of styrofoam w to-go plastic silverware. My 87 year old mother was asked to serve food last night!! She can’t get out of bed due to exhaustion from helping in the dining room, for hours. When she called me, I was dumbfounded. She was in pain from standing so long, serving food to her fellow residents. We are so angry and disappointed. I can’t wait to get her out of there.

The staff is very polite, med team is always short handed ,the aides are very impatient. The food is ok, breakfast is terrile, terrible, the price we pay they should be able to fix better meals, sample of breakfast scoop of eggs ,1 slice of toast, another day pastry orange, banana,. This is unacceptable these people need more balanced meals every day.

My mom was in Heartland Health Care Center - canton. I didn't like any of it. I had a bad experience with them, I wasn't happy with the social worker, and my mom fell five times there. She broke her hip, and I wasn't happy with them at all. I never really got the chance to go in, I had to visit her outside the window, and I understand that, but there were other things that were happening that I wasn't happy with. The year before, on Mother's Day, I sent flowers and cards up there. They had released my mom to my sister, and when I called they kept telling me for three days my mom was sleeping, but she had already been released. When I called to speak to mom, they would never give me the phone, they would tell me she was sleeping or she was eating, and they said they would call me back. They would never call me back. I don't know how to tell them to improve.

I was at Belle Fountain in Riverview for rehab. It was wonderful. The therapists were great and so were the aides. I really liked it there. The food was great, too; I never refused any of it. They used to have activities, but with COVID we have just been staying in our rooms. However, there is an activity manager who came around with things that you can do, like coloring and crossword puzzles. I was even able to make a couple of things with beads. They actually came around to our rooms. We couldn't get together in the activity room. The building was always clean. Whenever I was out to visit home, the cleaning ladies would come into my room wearing double masks and shields, and I would need to put mine on as well. They did a good job with that.

American House Riverview is a very good community. I would love to put my husband there. Nicole was very nice and very informative. She was perfect. She showed us around and I really liked the place a lot. The apartments were all very nice and very clean. They also have a movie theater and a laundry room.

My mom is in Brookdale Northville but we got hospice in there, too. She hasn't been in there long really to get to know the place but it's clean, and they take care of her. She has only been there two weeks. She left there and went to the hospital for three to four days, and then came back. There's not much we could say, they haven't done that much for us to really say anything really bad, and I can't say anything bad about the place. It's a good place. My mom hasn't eaten in three weeks. They provide food but she hasn't eaten a thing.
According to the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care survey, assisted living in Wayne County is more affordable than in other areas of Michigan, including Lansing ($4,500) and Monroe ($4,720). Average monthly costs here are around $800 less than in Ann Arbor ($5,050), which is the most expensive location for assisted living, but about $1,400 more than in Saginaw, where seniors pay the least. Wayne County assisted living rates are also higher than both the national ($4,000) and state averages ($3,850).
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Wayne County, so data for the nearby Detroit area was used.

Comparing the cost of senior care options is easier and more accurate when the various factors that affect price are understood. The biggest factors are usually the type of care, setting and number of service hours provided. The 24-hour supervision and availability of skilled services in nursing homes helps explain why this type of care is twice as expensive as assisted living and in-home care. Another factor that deserves consideration is room and board, which is usually included in the price of assisted living. The average rates for homemakers and home health aides only cover the hours of service provided, so household operating costs must be added on for a fair cost comparison with assisted living.

Medicaid was introduced by the federal government in 1965 to provide health care services to the most vulnerable among the nation’s population: low-income adults, pregnant women, families with young children, disabled and blind adults and the elderly. Today, each state administers its own Medicaid program with joint funding contributed by the federal government.
Michigan Medicaid provides approximately 2.2 million residents with essential health care coverage for primary and specialist care, emergency room and hospital services, preventive care, diagnostic tests, prescriptions and institutional nursing home care.
Seniors and disabled adults must be U.S. citizens or legal residents to qualify for Medicaid in Michigan. Those who meet the eligibility guidelines for Supplemental Security Income benefits automatically receive full Medicaid coverage. All other Wayne County residents must meet the following qualification requirements to obtain coverage for medical and long-term care services:
Long-Term Care Insurance
Michigan residents who want to be proactive and plan ahead for a move to assisted living may consider purchasing a long-term care insurance policy. There are lots of factors to consider when comparing policies, including whether they’re guaranteed renewable, if in-home or assisted living care is covered, if an inflation protection rider can be added and any limitations and exclusions a policy contains. As with other types of health and life insurance, the availability of LTC coverage and its cost depend on the health history of the applicant.
For help understanding the details of an LTC insurance policy or assistance with filing a claim, Wayne County seniors can call Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500.
Optional State Supplementation
Seniors and disabled adults with little income and assets who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income also qualify for the Michigan Optional State Supplementation program. The extra cash benefit OSS provides can go toward expenses not covered by Medicaid, such as assisted living room and board charges.
To qualify for SSI and OSS benefits, Wayne County residents must have a monthly income below the current federal benefit rate, which is $771 or less for single people and $1,157 for married couples. The combined monthly benefit amount received varies depending on an applicant’s marital status and living arrangement, but it may be as high as $950.30 for an individual and $1900.60 for a married couple.
To learn more or apply for the SSI and Michigan OSS programs, seniors can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Wayne County’s two Area Agencies on Aging have a shared mission of empowering older residents.
