My mother will be moving into Primrose Retirement Community of Kansas City. It was a very good tour. She's moving into independent living. It had a theater and a pub. She also found out that she has two friends that are living up there right now and we just really liked it. She will have a big room for a dining room, a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and the bathroom. It's very roomy. They had an exercise room and a beauty shop. The staff was very nice and very easy to work with.

Garden Village was very good, it was almost within budget, but not quite, but the only thing about it was my mother didn't want a studio, she wanted a one- or a two-bedroom. They did not have that available, but as far as the property is concerned, it was pleasant. The staff was caring, I didn't have any issues with anybody, they were extremely helpful as they could be, very forthright, they didn't sugarcoat anything, or hide anything, they told it like it really is. They showed me an area where the people kind of gather, and they have activities and things of that matter, they had that available. I saw sitting areas outside for those that desired to get a little fresh air, you were not confined, and if you wanted a meal, they had that available too. Everything seemed to be well-kept.

My mother was at Brookdale Wornall Place. She started in independent and was moved to assisted. That's pretty much where my frustration as next of kin began. She moved from assisted living at another facility, and my mom took a not next of kin person because she wanted out of the other place so badly. They accepted her into independent living with support, which on her file it was clear she belonged in assisted living. It's a struggle because I'm getting calls for falls and things like that which if you're an independent, you don't do. She is still her own medical decision maker, but still had they looked at her file, there's my signature and not the friend she took with her that day. I'm surprised I didn't get a call or anything when everything else has my name on it. She moved in and only a few months later, she got seriously sick like close to death and was admitted to the hospital. They said she needed to be out in 10 days and I went off. I'm like she never belonged in independent and why are you saying she has to leave instead of offering to move her to your assisted because they had assisted living, too. All I'm told is, "We legally have the right to do it." I'm like, "You know what you're doing is shady whether it's legal or not." The fact that you keep repeatedly saying "we're within our legal right," that means you consulted a lawyer. You can't put someone out when they're in the hospital fighting for their life. I will support a move to assisted living because that is where she belonged all along, but you're not just gonna kick her out because she got sick once. I wanted to move her then because I just felt if you're the type of place that will do that, she didn't belong there to begin with. It's a pretty nice facility. They moved her to assisted, but jacked up her rent so much it was no longer affordable, so then she had to move. She thought the food was okay, she thought the activities were okay, and she made really great friends. There's a lot of turnovers, so she would get attached to a CNA or certain caregivers, but they were never there long.

We toured Senior Star at Villa Ventura. The staff was very friendly, it seemed to be clean, I don't recall anything odd, and I think everything was fine. We had a meal there, and it was fine. I met a few of the residents, several of the staff members introduced themselves and welcomed us for our visit.

I'm happy with the Gardens at Barry Road. The staff was fine, I like them, they seemed to be doing their job. My friend has a deluxe studio, which means it has more room than the bedroom, but they had a variety of rooms, and actual apartments. I know they do things like bingo, karaoke, and they go to Target, Walmart, Dollar store, and they have puzzles, and just a lot of things for the elderly to do. They have a beauty salon, too.

We're probably going to move my father into Garden Village in the spring. Everybody was friendly, it was clean, and it looked like they take care of the residents there. They have three meals a day, they take them to doctors' appointments and to the store, there are outings on a weekly basis, and they have movie night. The staff was great, very nice, and answered all my questions.

Ive been to Garden Village before, my impression of the place was that it was very okay, and the tour was done very well. I liked the physical appearance, and it seemed to be clean. I thought the lawn was beautiful. I liked the way the whole place looked, but I couldnt afford it. The apartments were very nice, but the one I was shown was very small, and it wasnt big enough for the type of bed that I have. It had a kitchen. The staff was very nice, very friendly, and very accommodating. The dining room was quite large, but not like a restaurant. I thought the outside was very neat and well taken care of.

My cousin moved into Brookdale Wornall Place last week. Its excellent, and I liked it. They have happy hour once a week, field trips, and trips to the store and their doctors' appointments. They pretty much take care of their needs. Its very nice, very clean, and the food is definitely a 5, he loves it. I think they need an orientation period for new arrivals, because they tend to be a bit confused or depressed because of the move.

Garden Village was very nice, and I really liked it. The best of the places I visited. I thought it was nicely run. They had great activities and it was in a good state of repair. The staff did an exceptionally good job. All the staff I met was a 5. Its actually independent living, but you can contract with their nursing staff for care if you need it.

Care Cost Comparison
Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey reveals the cost of nursing home care, whether in a private or semiprivate room, is nearly twice as much as assisted living care in many Missouri cities. This is not true in Kansas City, as monthly expenses for care are similar in all areas except adult day care, which costs just $1,733 per month. A semiprivate nursing room in Kansas City costs $1,532 more than an assisted living facility and $1,197 more than a home health aide. While homemaker services average $46 less per month than expenses for an assisted living residence, it isn’t necessarily a more cost-effective option than services at a facility. Comparing other household expenses, such as rent, utilities and household maintenance, may make an assisted living facility or nursing home more affordable than professional services at home. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Kansas City
Medicaid in Missouri
Seniors in Missouri can apply for Medicaid, Medicare or both programs. Seniors on Medicaid, known as MO HealthNet, must be at least 65 years old and meet income and asset requirements. These guidelines vary based on household size and whether a senior lives alone or with others. A senior on Social Security who lives alone in their own home can have a monthly income of up to $771, but that figure drops to $514 for a senior who lives with friends or family members.
Seniors automatically qualify for MO HealthNet if they are deemed disabled by the state of Missouri and/or the Social Security Administration. In this situation, Medicaid helps eliminate the gap in coverage some seniors face while waiting for Medicare benefits to begin. Medical providers treat Medicare as the primary insurance company and MO HealthNet as the secondary insurer when a senior has plans with each provider.
Missouri seniors interested in obtaining Medicaid coverage can apply online at MyDSS.MO.gov/healthcare or request an application over the phone by calling (800) 735-2966. Applications are also accepted in person at the Family Support Division located at 324 E 11th St #1100, Kansas City, MO 64106, or seniors can mail completed applications to the address provided on their application.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Missouri Independent Living Waiver
Kansas City Medicaid recipients may qualify for the Missouri Independent Living Waiver, which provides financial help with in-home care as well as facility services. This waiver may also help cover personal care essentials not included in a Medicaid plan, such as specialized medical equipment and environmental accessibility adaptations.
This waiver is not just for seniors, but seniors can retain enrollment after age 64 if they meet the program’s criteria for income, assets and medical need.
To apply for this program, contact the The Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Senior and Disability Service or a MO HealthNet representative at (573) 751-3425.
Supplemental Nursing Care
Seniors who qualify for nursing home services or mental health services in a hospital setting can apply for the Supplemental Nursing Care program. The program helps offset the expenses of assisted care, and it also provides an allowance of up to $50 for personal needs.
Additional monthly cash benefits are $156 per month for seniors in residential care facilities and $292 per month for seniors in assisted living facilities. After a resident in one of these facilities pays their required portion of expenses, the state helps cover the remaining costs.
Seniors interested in the program must be at least 65 years old, and disabled applicants considering nursing home care need to be 21 or older. Applicants cannot have given away or sold any real estate or personal property for a price below fair market value during the last five years. If the applicant is married, they can request asset protection for the spouse remaining at home.
