My parents love Courtyard Retirement & Assisted Living. At first, the $5100 a month seemed awfully expensive, but when you break it down for two people, you are looking at about $2600 a month. They have a private pond in the back where one of the nurses will take my dad out to go fishing for a while, and he really loves that. He is ninety-one and has been a sportsman all his life. In general, everything seems to be fine. They got an apartment with two bedrooms and two baths, so there is plenty of room for them, and they like it. Mama was wondering about the beauty parlor and I told her, "All you have to do is go in there," but of course you have to make an appointment first. I've heard from them that they both like the food, too. My mom likes to walk, and the way that this place is built, she can turn around and do as much walking as she wants and still be inside, since they can't go outside due to the pandemic. It's shaped like a big square with places along the way and a whole bunch of windows where they can look outside while walking. There is also a courtyard where she can sit down and look outside.

We visited Brookdale Lafayette. My sister-in-law liked it. If she chooses to make a change, that will probably be the one she selects. I'm not really pleased with the lack of room in the rooms, but all the facilities now are very small, and I wouldn't like it for myself. The staff members were very nice. I didn't particularly like the room because most of them did not have separate bedrooms, but it may have been just the ones that we saw. We saw a couple of rooms where there were clients, and those rooms were just small. It depends on how active you are, but if it were me, I wouldn't like it as far as not having a living area to entertain my friends separate from a bedroom. My sister-in-law would be pretty much independent care, but it would be with some assistance. The staff was very pleasant, very helpful, and very nice.

Brookdale Lafayette is good. It needs some updates but they're working on it. The staff who met with me was very good. The rooms need to be updated, although the space was okay. The place was very clean. They have transportation, barber shop, and activities.

Brookdale Lafayette's rooms were very small and set up with a very tiny living room that runs into the living room and bathroom, so it wasn't a comfortable setting for two people. The place wasn't appropriate for my and wife's activity level because most of the people were less mobile than my wife and I would like. The girl named Rachel was extremely helpful and a lovely person to work with, so people who have her are lucky. The staff was excellent. We were treated extraordinarily well. A lot of the activities they had were very sedentary, like puzzles and reading. It wasn't a very active community, which was the biggest negative. Instead of having individual areas for activities, they had a widening in the hallway, and people's rooms opened onto where the activity area was. They had a very small chapel area and a library area that was set up basically the same way.
