Everyone was mostly helpful! I have nothing really negative too say. Their PT rehab helped me tremendously! I had a serious injury and the nurses & staff were very attentive too me. I got my medication on a schedule which was great. The Physical Therapists were top notch & helped me transition thru my recovery. I’m grateful for all the help I received! Thank you once again! My Mom is a resident at the Terraces at Park Place. My sisters and I just love the care our Mom is receiving there. Everyone there takes care of her like family! The food she loves and she loves all the great activities! She now has a life with friends but with also has round the clock care which we are thrilled about! The place is absolutely beautiful and the staff can’t do enough for you! We are glad our mom is living at the Terraces and so is she!

My dad moved into Cardinal Village. I would highly recommend them. They were great. They worked with us on pricing, gave us the tour, and full brochures. They were excellent. I liked the care they offer, they have onsite doctors and nurses, and they seem to be involved with the residents; they knew most of them. They also have a lot of decent activities there. The staff is excellent. They took their time and spoke to us. They seem to know each one of their residents. When we were there they explained everything to us, and they've been very helpful. The apartment is nice. He's got a screened in patio, and he's got his own space. It is a very nice apartment. My father said he enjoyed the food very much. The facility was clean, spacious, and they seem to take a lot of interest in it. It was good.

We chose Cardinal Village for my mom because of a prior experience with a different family member under independent living, as well as for their location, and having read reviews that were already posted. They have a lot of different activities. The place itself is welcoming and each apartment is left to the individual to fix it up, so we were able to make my mom's apartment very home-like.

I visited Greenfield Senior Living, it’s really nice, it’s clean, and felt very much like a home, and not a hospital. The people I’ve met were very helpful, friendly, and very accommodating. The location is good, the grounds are really safe and clean. They get together and do exercises, have ice cream nights, and bus trips. They offer transportation.

Juniper Village at Williamstown was comparable, the staff was helpful, and the woman in charge was very good. I walked in, there was a meeting room, and the dining area was on the left, and offices were straight ahead.

Summit Place was similar to the others, they have very friendly staff, very helpful, the rooms were very nice, and the facility was very nice. Betty, the woman I worked with was outstanding and she was wonderful. I liked everything about it. They reached out extraordinarily more than the other places did.

Senior care costs are largely based on the location, the type of services offered and the average cost of living in the area. In Gloucester County, costs for nursing home care are significantly higher than assisted living, and in-home senior care services such as a home health aide and homemaker cost less than assisted living.  Seniors who are comparing the costs of different care options should also consider day-to-day living expenses, such as food, rent, home maintenance and utilities, that aren’t included the cost of in-home care. Residential senior care usually includes room and board in the cost.  Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Gloucester County

Medicaid in New Jersey

Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides limited health insurance for people who have low income and minimal assets. Each state operates its own Medicaid program.

In New Jersey, Medicaid is called the NJ FamilyCare program and administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services, which uses a number of Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) to manage health care for Medicaid clients. New Jersey residents aged 65 and older who meet specific financial and functional criteria may qualify for NJ FamilyCare coverage.

To qualify, single seniors may earn no more than $2,313 per month and have countable assets valued at $2,000 or less. Couples applying together can earn no more than $4,426 per month and own no more than $3,000 in countable assets.

In New Jersey, Medicaid applicants are exempt from counting personal belongings, furniture, one vehicle, a burial trust (non-revocable) and a home valued up to $878,000 as long as the applicant and/or their spouse lives in the home. Note that there is a 5-year look-back period to assess any assets that were gifted or sold prior to the submission of a Medicaid application.

New Jersey residents aged 65 and older may be eligible for comprehensive health care benefits and assisted living costs through Medicaid Managed Long Term Services and Supports (MLTSS). Under this newly created care program, eligible seniors are automatically enrolled to receive medical and nonmedical care to meet their needs, including funding for assisted living placement.

Under the new MLTSS system assisted living enrollment caps have been eliminated for seniors, allowing for faster access to an assisted living placement.

For more information on Medicaid funding for assisted living residences in New Jersey, contact the Aging and Disability Resource Connection of New Jersey at (877) 222-3737 or the Gloucester County Division of Senior Services at (856) 384-6900.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplement

New Jersey seniors aged 65 and older who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits may be eligible for additional benefits for use toward the room and board portion of assisted living costs through the Optional State Supplement (OSS) program.

To help control the costs of assisted living for low-income seniors, the state limits what assisted living facilities can charge for room and board. In New Jersey, this limit equals the combined maximum amount available through SSI and OSS to ensure SSI-eligible seniors can cover the cost of assisted living.

The maximum total monthly combined SSI/OSS payment in New Jersey for a single senior in assisted living is $981.05 and $1,895 for a couple.

For more information on the New Jersey Optional State Supplement, contact the Glassboro Social Security office at (800) 772-1213.

Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefit

Honorably discharged veterans and their survivors who are currently eligible to receive a VA pension and require daily assistance due to a disability or incapacity may be eligible for a pension top-up through the Aid and Attendance benefit.

Veterans who are currently excluded from receiving a VA pension due to excess income may also be eligible for a pension under the increased rates provided through this benefit.

To qualify, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be bedridden
  • Have eyesight tested at 5/200 or worse with corrective lenses for both eyes
  • Live in a nursing home to receive daily care due to mental and/or physical incapacity
  • Require assistance with one or more activity of daily living, including dressing, bathing, eating, toileting and/or managing a prosthesis
  • Have a visual field of 5 or fewer degrees due to concentric contraction

  • Veterans Housebound Allowance

Veterans who are currently eligible for a VA pension, have a VA disability rating of 100 and are largely housebound as a result of their disability or disabilities may be eligible for the Housebound allowance — a monthly pension top-up.

Note that applicants may only receive benefits through either the Housebound or the Aid and Attendance program, even if they meet the criteria for both programs. Disabilities do not need to be service related.

For more information about both the Aid and Attendance and the Housebound Allowance, contact Gloucester County Veteran Affairs at (856) 401-7660 or the Newark Regional VA Office at (800) 827-1000.
