My aunt is here and from what I've seen, it's fantastic. I'd like to have a room there. The staff during the tour was very nice, and even after, I can't believe how nice everybody is. They answered all my questions and even contacted me on the weekends to see how everything was going. They're very caring from what I've seen so far. Her studio is cute, and she actually slept better on her first night there. She woke up only twice at night but went right back to sleep. When she was in her place by herself in Queens, when she woke up in the middle of the night, she stayed up all night. For the first night, that's pretty good, so she must've been comfortable and felt safe and secure. Right now, the activities are limited because of Covid, but they're gonna be starting to have little groups like games, and they're starting up with Pokeno and bingo. Because of Covid, they have a few restrictions, but I've seen residents walking down the hall or roaming down the hall. They have a courtyard, which is nice, and they have a big room where they do crafts, a separate room for activities, and on her hall, there is a kitchen area if they want to cook something. There's a full-size refrigerator, oven, stove, a microwave and a dishwasher and a sink, and it looks like a kitchenette, so they could feel more that they could do stuff on their own. I really have nothing to complain about now. I've been amazed at everything. The staff is very friendly and they go out of their way to help you out. My aunt said she's content with the food. It's like a hotel when you go in, and the halls are carpeted. There's no smell, it doesn't stink like a nursing home, and the carpets are clean. Everything's clean. It's like a hotel room that you get to decorate yourself. The price is very reasonable. They're not having the dining room because of Covid. I did a live virtual tour, and the first time I saw the place was when my aunt moved in, and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect other than what I saw there, but actually being there was a lot nicer than the walkthrough.

We like Manor at Woodside a lot. The staff is very polite and helpful. They provide meals. My father-in-law is happy there. He was hesitant to try a different place and leave his home, but he actually keeps saying that he likes it. His apartment is very nice and clean, and it's got enough room. He's got a two-bedroom apartment, and it's just perfect for what he needs. He likes the food. They have nice activities, but he hasn't really tried it yet. They have a nice outside courtyard, a nice room where people can gather, and their dining room is very nice. It's just overall a nice living community for him. He's very new, so he hasn't really experienced a lot yet. The people are very friendly. Everything so far is good.

My mother is here. I like its proximity to all of her doctors and family. It's five minutes from everybody, and it's five minutes from her dialysis and her doctors' office. It's clean, and the handicap accessibility was one of the motivating factors. She gets three meals a day, she has a clean room, and she has access to the whole facility. There would be more going on if we weren't dealing with this pandemic. It's a little limited at this time, but that's understandable.

The Avalon was nice inside, and my father liked it. They had shared and private rooms. They basically stay on one floor, which I liked. They don't have to go on the stairs or elevators. They had a dining room, areas for crafts and a living room where they can watch TV. The staff during the tour was very nice. It seemed clean. It's not a new place, but we saw no real visible issues.

I didn't care for the location of The Avalon. It was basically in a small strip mall. I was kind of surprised. There really wasn't a designated area for the people to walk around. They were literally walking in a parking lot. It was small, but everyone seemed to be happy. They have activities. It was a little expensive. The people who work there were very nice and gave us a tour. It just wasn't a place where I would place my mom. It was only two floors, and when you walk in, that's where you check in, and when you look straight ahead there's their dining room, and toward the back is where all the bedrooms are. Upstairs, there are more bedrooms and another dining room. They have a common area with a big TV, a computer, and piano, so this is where they do their singalongs and a couple of activities. They have a beauty parlor and they have a doctor on staff. The rooms seem big for two people. Theresa, the woman who gave us the tour, was very nice and pleasant.

Care Cost Comparison
The most significant factor when considering senior-care costs is the level of care an individual needs. Nursing home care in a semiprivate room ($12,507) averages more than three times the cost of assisted living ($4,100). Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program for aged, blind or disabled individuals who have little or no income. SSI evaluates the senior’s income and brings their current income up to a fixed amount, which provides cash to help meet basic needs, such as food, clothing and shelter.
To be eligible for SSI, an individual must meet these requirements:
- Blind, disabled or age 65 or older
- A U.S. citizen or qualified alien
- Has limited income and resources
- Income is considered any cash or resource that can be used to meet an individuals food and shelter needs. The more countable income seniors have, the less SSI benefit will be received. The monthly maximum benefit amount is $771 (individual) or $1,157 (couple). Income that is excluded includes the first $20 of most income received in a month, food stamps, home energy assistance, loans to be repaid, money someone else spends for a senior’s utilities or medical bills and income tax refunds.
State Supplement Program (SSP)
The State Supplement Program (SSP) provides financial assistance on top of SSI payments for help with the room-and-board costs of assisted living. An individual can receive up to $694, and couples can receive up to $1,773 towards assisted living costs.
Seniors are eligible for SSP if they meet these requirements: - Blind, disabled or age 65 or older
- Reside in New York
- Have limited income and resources
- A U.S. citizen or qualified alien
- To apply or request more information for either SSI and/or SSP, please visit your local Social Security office or call (800) 772-1213.
