We used Fairfield Family Care for 2 months. My experience was excellent, the people they sent were fabulous, they were competent, friendly, compassionate, helpful, and professional. The service and billing was fine, the agency was concerned about my mom, and that she got good service. They came 3 days a week, 4 hours a day. They made sure she took her medications, she was washed and clean, and they did a little housekeeping. The record keeping may be off in the beginning, but other than that the billing was fine.

We are using Fairfield Family Care for my mother. The services are basically bathing her, making sure she eats, and the caregiver is very good at keeping her playing games, and keeping her occupied. She keeps her amused for a few hours a week. We love her. Communication is going well, they've been responsive, and I'm satisfied with the care.

Fairfield Family Care did a really good job for us and my husband. They were here for the most part 24/7. I had three people come, and two of the women were really wonderful. The gentleman was very good and nice, but he was not as experienced as the two women. I can't say enough about them. They offered help with everything including medications and cleaning. The agency was wonderful. It was worth every penny.

My father-in-law has moved into Sunrise at Fleetwood. So far, so good. There are no major issues with the way they operate the place. Overall, there are no complaints about the cleanliness and the upkeep. The staff is friendly, but at times they could use a little more staff. My father-in-law's room is a well-lit nice space. It accommodates him well. The dining room is a well-appointed nice area. It has a homey feel to it.

Atria Rye Brook is very luxurious, but it's not for me. The apartments are big enough and more than adequate. I saw people having lunch during my tour, the food was fine, and the dining area was more than adequate as well. They have amenities like an exercise area. The staff member I dealt with there was very personable. The place was very upscale and it's all very neat and clean. I think this community is very well run for people who like this sort of place.

My mother-in-law was at Sunrise at Fleetwood assisted living for three months and I was very dissatisfied. We paid them $700 extra to make sure she had her two medications every day. She had wandered off one night and one of the staff found her down a very busy road. Their psychiatrist concluded that she was confused and she would need a bracelet, so they would be notified if she went out the door. However, it only works if she goes out the front door, not if she goes out the back or the side. They would assign somebody for an additional $25 an hour to sit with her all day, and they were going to try to arrange a memory care unit for her. The nurse called me and said my mother-in-law had 104 fever. I took her to Urgent Care, and the doctor told me she has no fever nor a urinary tract infection, but her blood pressure was 300/179. The doctor said the facility is not giving her her medication the way she's supposed to take it. It's either they're handing it to her and she's throwing it away or she's pretending to take it but no one is making sure that she takes it. I took her out of there, and it took me six months to get my refund. If she couldn't remember to go to any of the activities, they never bothered to take her. When they went on trips, she wasn't able to go because they did not have someone that could watch her. They need to keep track of the patients, they need to make sure that they're getting their medications, and they need a nurse that knows what she's talking about.

My husband had rehab at King Street Rehab for two weeks. The place was spotless, the food was great and they take care of the patients. They're very good and I'd recommend them to anybody. They put my husband to bed, help him out of bed and with his meals, really everything. They have private and semi-private rooms. They do all kinds of exercises with the patients, and they give everything the patient needs. The activities were very good. Don't hesitate to go there because your loved on will be cared for.

Sunrise at Fleetwood didn't have too many activities, but they had more residents who have dementia. It's more like an adult care than for the physically disabled people. The rooms and the facility were beautiful. The dining area was beautiful and cozy. The building itself was very nice. The staff was excellent. They had a nice kitchen and nice meals.

My sister-in-law chose Bethel Springvale Inn because of the comfortable ambiance that she experienced. It's going very well and she's settled in and happy there. At first I was there to make sure she's getting a shower and getting her hair washed, and she is pretty comfortable with the aides and they feel comfortable with her. She's happy with the food as well, although a lot of the people there are not. They have crossword puzzles, lectures and workshops, and a lot of activities that everyone participates in like happy hours which is nice.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Westchester County
Medicaid in New York
The NYS Medicaid State Plan provides low-cost or free medical services to low-income seniors in Westchester County and the rest of the state. Medicaid can help pay for long-term care, home health assistance and an assisted living facility. It also provides seniors with the medical equipment, transportation, inpatient and outpatient hospital services, physician services and laboratory and X-ray services.
To be eligible for Medicaid, applicants must be age 65 or older, a resident of the state of New York and a U.S. citizen (or have satisfactory immigration status).
To meet financial requirements:
- Single seniors’ income must be $842 per month or less
- Couples must have an income of less than $1,233 per month
- Non-exempt assets cannot exceed $15,150 for a single candidate and $22,200 for couples.
Seniors whose income exceeds the set limits may still be eligible for the Medicaid Excess Income program, also known as the spend-down or surplus-income program. This program pays for medical bills once a senior’s monthly out-of-pocket spending reaches a specific threshold.
The NY Assisted Living Program (ALP) is a waiver that pays for services of a licensed assisted living residence for individuals who require care but don’t need the all-inclusive services of a nursing home. To be eligible for this waiver, individuals must be age 21 and over, have a degree of self-mobility to function in an assisted living environment and meet the income limits of Medicaid recipients. Services paid by ALP include room and board, skilled nursing, medical equipment, adult day care, occupational and physical therapy and home health services. This program is open to Medicaid-eligible and ineligible individuals.
The ALP is regulated by the State Department of Health and has limited enrollment. To apply for Medicaid, call (855) 355-5777, apply online or visit the local office in your area.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
The Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program
The Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) helps individuals who can no longer perform everyday tasks due to a chronic illness, injury, disability or naturally aging. Long-term care can be provided at home, adult day care or in assisted living facilities. The FLTCIP covers Federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, active and retired members of the uniformed services, and their qualified relatives. This program reimburses 100 percent of charges incurred for services, including assisted living, home and adult day care and formal and informal caregiver services. FLTCIP has four prepackaged and customized plans to choose from depending on your long-term care plans.
For more information, call (800) 582-3337 or apply online.
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)
The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is intended for seniors who wish to stay at home instead of an institutionalized setting. The program also pays for services in a nursing facility when an individual can no longer safely remain at home.
Residents at assisted living facilities can use the PACE program. It doesn’t contribute toward room and board fees, but it does provide services that would otherwise be an added expense. To qualify, participants must be at least 55 years old, require skilled nursing and be enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid. For those who don’t have Medicare or Medicaid, seniors and their family members can pay for PACE privately. Benefits are determined on a case-by-case basis and are specified only for medical and care services.
For more information on the Westchester County PACE program, call (833) 252-2737.
