The Pines are a Diamond in the Rough! Great grounds. Amazing location. The staff are just insanely friendly. Whenever I go there to visit my parents, everyone says hello with a hearty and sincere smile. I'm so grateful I found them and know my parents are holistically being taken care of.

Be very careful of this place. They are a corporation that will cut corners to boost profit at every opportunity. They will raise your rates without warning and with no discussion. They are currently charging us for the highest level of care for my mother even though she is in the hospital and receiving no care from them. Their contract has an arbitration clause for disputes but so far they have ignored my requests for this and they will send you to collections if you dispute any charge. Just be careful and know what you are getting into.

My grandmother is at Brookdale Charlotte East Independent Living, and the number-one best thing about it is the staff. They have a tremendous staff who cares a lot about their residents, and that makes all the difference. I highly recommend the facility. It is not in a very nice location, though. It's kind of in the bad part of Charlotte, which is why it's one of the most affordable options, and the facility itself is very old. It's an old building, but it's not run down. They take care of it, but there have been a lot of issues over the years about water or outlets not working -- you name it -- and it's just because the building is probably thirty or forty years old. I'd give the layout of the facility a "five," and I'd probably give the cleanliness a "three" or a "four." The other complaint I have is they keep raising the prices, which I think happens everywhere. Once or twice a year they increase the rates, which is really disappointing for my grandma, who is on a fixed income. The activities have been limited since COVID, but they used to do outings and go out to restaurants one night a month. Sometimes they do field trips, like going to a museum, festival, or fair. They still regularly go shopping right now. A majority of their residents are still very mobile and still pretty active, so they try to keep them as busy as possible. Whenever I go every holiday, they're having parties, guest speakers, musical performers, and instrumental groups. They also do all kinds of crafts, exercises, and plenty of games, and they try to make big parties out of sporting events. Before COVID, they did a lot, and I think they're trying to bring some of that back. It's just been hard because there are still a lot of protocols in place.

Shads Landing is a nice place; I like it. It's clean and they have a lot of activities. They had movies, played games, had a pool table with a large dining area, had chapels, and had a little gym area.

I like Brookdale Charlotte East. They have a 24-hour courier service which I liked; there's someone on staff 24 hours a day. We sign in and out and they know who's on the property and who is not. We tasted the food and it was good, the apartments were good as far as the size and the closet sizes were large. Anyone who we saw or spoke were nice people. They have movies, exercising, a hair salon, a chapel, a bird sanctuary in the back that had cages and everything; it was really pretty and I like that.

I visited Brookdale South Charlotte. The people were nice, and it was a nice facility, but I just did not get the feel of home while I was there. They are very nice; they offered to help us even if we don't go to their place. They have a whole-month, full calendar of activities for the people to do. They were very personable. They also always decorate for every holiday, or they let the tenants do that. They honor their veterans by putting their pictures on the wall, and they do that for all the veterans living there.

We toured here. It's a really nice tour, a beautiful facility, and the staff was great. They showed us around. Mother liked the layout and things of that nature as well. The staff was very friendly, very detailed, and very knowledgeable. We looked at a model or a guest suite. They're more like apartments. It's very easy to move around.

Shads Landing is a nice place, and it's clean. The tour was very thorough, and the staff was friendly. The unit that I saw was just a basic room with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. They had a library, a chapel, and laundry rooms. Meals are included. I only met one staff during my tour there.

Brookdale Charlotte East was very personable and engaging, and they went above and beyond. I met some residents, and they were very nice. They seemed happy, and it seemed like they liked it. It seemed that they have more amenities available than the other place I toured. The one activity that meant most to me, even though I didn't need it, is the wellness button. The residents push that button when they got up, and if you didn't push the button someone would come and check on you around lunchtime to make sure you are OK. I noticed that in other facilities, it may be a day or two before someone checks on you. They called ahead of time to see if we had any food allergies, which my daughter did, and they addressed that and sent home a very delicious meal. Her name was Michelle; I loved her. It was like when you meet somebody who's going to care for your loved ones. The fact that she cared so much with the little things that she mentioned and took note of, and the amount of information that she took in about me was awesome. Brookdale seems to be the best fit.

Care Cost Comparison
When comparing senior care options, the type of care needed is typically the most significant factor affecting cost, and this is particularly true in Charlotte. The cost of nursing home care is nearly double that of assisted living and home care. Compared to home care, assisted living is about the same price as homemaker services and $200 less than hiring a home health aide. For home care services, it’s important to consider the cost of rent or mortgage payments, utilities and home maintenance to get a true comparison. These costs are already included in the monthly fees for assisted living and nursing homes. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Charlotte
Medicaid in North Carolina
North Carolina provides long-term care assistance to seniors through the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Medical Assistance. These programs provide alternatives to those who would otherwise require a nursing home level of care. Some Medicaid options allow seniors to stay at home or in a community-based setting while receiving care. Other Medicaid waivers can be used for assisted living.
For example, the North Carolina Personal Care Services program helps seniors who need assistance with activities of daily living, including feeding, using the bathroom and dressing. The PCS program helps participants with individual programs of care at home or in a care setting such as adult foster care or assisted living residences. Services may include light housecleaning, and eligible applicants can choose their own PCS agency. This is an entitlement program, so all eligible seniors can receive the services.
Those eligible for Medicaid include seniors 65 and over, infants and kids under 21, blind or disabled citizens, low-income families and seniors who need long-term care. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to show North Carolina residency.
Medicaid financial eligibility requirements list income and asset limits. To be eligible, individuals can earn up to $1,012 per month and own assets worth up to $2,000, while couples can earn up to $1,372 and own $3,000 in assets. For those who exceed the eligible income, the state allows a deductible for medical expenses, also known as a spend-down provision. Call 800-662-7030 for more information on Medicaid coverage.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
PACE
The PACE program offers care to frail Charlotte seniors, who must be 55 or older, need the same level of care as nursing facility services and meet other conditions listed in the PACE organization’s agreement. PACE isn’t a direct funding source to pay for senior care. Instead, it covers senior’s medical needs and some assistance with the activities of daily living, which can help seniors save on assisted living costs since many of these services aren’t included in the basic monthly fees.
The program is available for both Medicare and Medicaid recipients and provides comprehensive medical and social services at home, adult day care centers and inpatient settings, such as assisted living facilities. For more information on the PACE program, call (919) 234-1707.
Elderlife Bridge Loans
Elderlife helps Charlotte seniors transitioning to senior living, including assisted living. Bridge loans help cover the cost of long-term care until another funding source comes through. Loan approval is subject to creditworthiness, but seniors can have up to six cosigners to increase the likelihood of approval. Application approval is generally quick, but typically the lender will require a plan for permanent funding. To learn more about Elderlife bridge loans, call (888) 228-4500.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Seniors living at home and in good health may be eligible for a new long-term care insurance policy. These policies generally involve a deductibe and must be in place before the need for long-term care arises. Fidelity is one company offering this product, and its online calculator is a useful tool for determining costs. For more information on long-term care insurance, call (866) 489-0963.
