Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Cuyahoga Falls

Medicaid in Ohio

About one in five Ohio residents receive free basic health coverage through Medicaid, the national health insurance program that’s funded through the federal and state governments. Approximately 74% of elderly and disabled Ohioans qualify for Medicaid, and 59% of the state’s Medicaid expenditures go toward their services.  Medicaid is designed to provide coverage for Americans otherwise unable to pay for health care, so there are strict income and asset limits in place for applicants. To qualify for Medicaid, seniors can earn up to $2,313 per month when applying alone and up to $4,626 per month when applying with a spouse. Medicaid income limits are based on three times the current federal SSI benefit rate and are subject to change each year.  Additionally, individuals can’t have more than $2,000 in countable assets or $3,000 when applying with a spouse. Countable assets include cash and bank account balances, stocks and bonds and real estate, with the exception of a principal residence worth no more than $585,000. Personal belongings, furnishings, one vehicle and an irrevocable burial trust are also exempt. For more information or to apply for Medicaid coverage, contact the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline at (800) 324-8680.  Ohio Assisted Living Waiver Program The Ohio Assisted Living waiver program is a Medicaid waiver designed to prevent or delay nursing home placement among seniors by funding services and supports in an assisted living setting.  To qualify, seniors must meet the Medicaid financial eligibility criteria and require assistance with one or more activities of daily living, such as eating, managing an ostomy, bathing and dressing. If approved for the ALW, seniors may be provided with services deemed medically necessary to avoid placement in a nursing facility. These services may include skilled nursing, medication administration, personal care and access to a personal emergency response system.  To learn more about the ALW program, contact the Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities at (800) 421-7277.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Residential State Supplement Program Seniors age 60 and older who receive Supplemental Security Income benefits and need to reside in an assisted living facility due to a disability or age-related impairment may qualify for a state-funded SSI top-up through the Residential State Supplement program.  The RSS program provides a maximum monthly combined SSI payment of $1,180 for a single senior and $2,170 for a couple. Money from RSS must be used toward the room-and-board portion of assisted living costs.  For more information about the state RSS program, contact OhioMHAS at (855) 777-6364. Assisted Living Bridge Loan Seniors who need access to cash in order to fund a move to an assisted living facility may be eligible for an assisted living bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services.  Bridge loans are structured as a line of credit and available for terms of up to 12 months. There are no application fees, and payments are interest-only until the loan is mature or the borrower decides to close it, whichever comes first.  This assisted living financing option may be suitable for seniors selling their home or waiting for insurance benefits to begin paying their assisted living costs.  To apply or learn more about bridge loans, contact Elderlife Financial at (888) 228-4500.
