It's difficult right now, but the staff at Edgewood Downs is friendly and they have guidelines to make everyone safe. The only ones at the moment that can go in are designated caregivers so it protects the residents. My mother-in-law loves the food. She gets 3 meals a day and 2 snacks delivered to her room, and she doesn't have any complaints about it. The staff has been friendly and more than helpful with mom. She has things she is confused with, like working the coffee pot, but the staff is always there to help her out.

Edgewood Downs didn't have a memory unit. It was more of an independent living facility and they were bringing care people in. The pricing was much better than some of the other places, but because of my dad's memory issues, I have reservations even with the good price. My mother liked it and she's somewhat independent. They painted and gardened, and she liked the independent stuff that they offered. The shower in the units had a two or three inch lip with a hole in the middle to enter and exit, and it didn't seem real big. My parents are more on the edge moving around, so the shower gave me a little bit of concern. With all the activities, the pricing, and the friendly people, if it was just assisted living, I probably would have jumped on it right then and there.

Edgewood Downs is not quite as clean and bright, but is still acceptable. It was pretty good-sized. The dining area was very nice and rather large. The staff who toured us was very nice and friendly.

Hearthstone at Murrayhill was well thought out. The 1-bedroom apartment was very well laid out. They have an experienced staff. They also have the same activities. They have bingo and dancing. I had lunch there with a friend of mine. They have good staff members, good food, and a good facility.

The apartments at Edgewood Downs were too small. There's a library and activities room that seemed to be satisfactory. The staff was quite friendly. The dining area looked more like a restaurant than a cafeteria. It was well maintained, and they had facilities for dogs and cats.

Edgewood Downs' staff was very accommodating and nice. The food seemed good. It was an older building, but there were no bad smells or dirt. There was nothing wrong with the place.

Edgewood Downs was beautiful, very friendly, and very clean. Overall, it was a very nice community with studio and one-bedroom apartments. If my mom was ready to live in a place like that, it's probably the one I would have chosen. They had in-room housekeeping and washed the beddings. They offered three meals a day, transportation to appointments, field trips, and events. They had an exercise room and exercise classes. It was really great.

We placed my friend at Edgewood Downs two weeks ago. It seems like a nice place. People seem nice, the place seems clean, and the food's fine. They have a bus that goes to different place and takes the seniors to different events. They have movie nights, a library area, computers for them to use, and people who come and sing. My friend is in a studio apartment which is quite efficient and large for the price. It's enough room for him, and there's a single bed, a TV, and some furniture. There's a big bathroom and a nice little open kitchen area, so it flows nicely and is easy to get around in. The lighting's good since it has good windows.

I live in Edgewood Downs, and I like it. The rooms are big enough, and the dining is very good. The food is very good, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They also got good value.
According to data from the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, seniors in Beaverton pay an average of $4,825 per month for assisted living. This rate is over $800 higher than the national average of $4,000 and over $200 above the state median of $4,593. The price is similar in Corvallis ($4,882) but more affordable in Bend ($4,553), Salem ($4,360), Albany ($4,210) and Eugene ($4,025). Locals pay $565 less than their counterparts in Grants Pass, which has the highest assisted living prices in Oregon at $5,390 per month.
Note: Cost data for senior care in Beaverton wasn’t available, so data for the metropolitan Portland area was used.
The monthly price of senior care is largely based on the level of care needed. This is clearly demonstrated by the $4,300 price difference between the $9,125 monthly rate for 24/7 skilled nursing home care and the $4,825 average for assisted living. With an average cost of $5,339 per month, in-home services from homemakers and home health aides cost significantly more than assisted living. Rates for these services only cover one-on-one care. Seniors are still responsible for their daily living expenses, such as groceries, utilities, upkeep, insurance and taxes. Those residing in an assisted living community don’t face these costs because they’re typically included in the room-and-board portion of a facility’s monthly fee.
Americans who can’t afford health insurance may be eligible for coverage through Medicaid, the jointly funded national program that’s regulated by the federal government and administered by each state.
In Beaverton, the State Health Authority administers the Medicaid program known as the Oregon Health Plan. Almost one-quarter of the state’s residents are enrolled in the plan, including families with young children, pregnant women and approximately 170,000 seniors and blind or disabled adults. The OHP provides the following health care services to those who meet the program’s eligibility requirements:
Oregon Supplemental Income Program
Beaverton residents aged 65 or older and those who are blind or disabled may qualify for a monthly cash benefit through the Oregon Supplemental Income program. Applicants must be receiving or eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits and meet the program’s financial and living arrangement requirements.
To learn more about OSIP or apply, seniors can contact the local Oregon DHS office at (503) 627-0362.
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Oregon PACE program provides Medicaid-eligible seniors with comprehensive medical and long-term care support services to help them remain in the community and avoid nursing home admission.
The program is available to Beaverton residents aged 55 or older with Medicaid or dual Medicaid and Medicare coverage. Applicants must be assessed as needing a nursing-home level of care but be able to safely live at home or in an assisted living setting.
Those approved for PACE participation receive full Medicaid medical benefits and are assessed by the program’s interdisciplinary team to determine the support services they need, which may include:
The Elsie Stuhr Center is a busy social hub where Beaverton adults aged 55 plus can enjoy an array of life-enriching social and recreational activities.
