I'm in Powell Valley Assisted Living and Memory Care Community. I would give them ten stars for their care. When I came here I was really in need of a lot of assistance. I'm now pretty independent, but I still like that during the quarantine I saw a lot of the caregivers, and they have just treated me with so much care, love, and kindness. They really take good care of me. The facility is in really good shape. Our dining room is beautiful, but we haven't been able to use it because of the quarantine, and we're just now opening up some activities, which is nice. We're actually having bingo every day, and we're doing tai chi in the morning.

Our experience has been wonderful. My aunt has been warmly welcomed by residents and the staff. The place is lovely and she's very happy with her room. The bathroom is large and has a walk-in shower. The food is delicious. The people are meeting all her needs as a new resident. She's in a studio, but there are also 1 and 2-bedroom apartments. They have free wi-fi and cable TV and 3 meals a day by a very good chef. They have a bus for transportation, stretching classes, exercise classes, card group, exercise machines, beauty salon, and a courtyard.

Farmington Square Gresham's assisted living was nice and inviting. Each building has its own little dining area. The room we saw was good. Nothing stood out that was great or bad. It's got several buildings and each building is not really big. If you downsize, you move to a different building on the same property. The staff who gave us the tour was very nice, friendly and accommodating. They answered our questions.

We really like it. The independent living apartment that we looked at was very roomy and larger than the standard 1-bedroom. It's a plus that it comes with a two-burner cooking area that others don't have. The dining area was lovely. We've been to this community twice and the gentleman who gave us the tour has been checking on us every now and then. They also have the usual things for the residents to do like card games, Bingo, movie nights, and so on. We also met a few community members in the hallways and they were very nice and lovely.

We visited, and it was a good one. We had a walkthrough and looked at the apartments. They looked nice, and they have new carpets, so that's a positive. The staff member was great, detailed, and clear with what he said.

I went to Farmington Square. The new cottage is nice, but the older cottage is a bit dated. The staff members are very nice and very attentive. The dining area is really nice. It is centrally located and easy for the residents to get to. They have a whirlpool bathtub. They have an interactive TV screen program for group activities. Another time I saw them doing an arts and crafts project.

When we visited Powell Valley the residents were gardening. The staff member who accommodated me at was very nice. Powell Valley has beautiful murals on the walls, which has really brightened up the atmosphere. They also have a cozy-looking eating area. It feels like you're in somebody's kitchen.

Overall, I'm really happy with Brookdale Mt. Hood. I'm pleased that my mother is there. It's smaller, so it's better than some big place for her where she'd be overwhelmed. The staff workers are all very pleasant. She doesn't complain about the food. She's gone to movies and done different things, like painting.
Nationwide, seniors pay an average of $4,000 per month for assisted living care. At $4,593 per month, seniors in Oregon face above-average assisted living bills. Gresham, a suburb of Portland, is expensive even by Oregon standards. Here, seniors pay an average of $4,825 per month.
Assisted living costs vary significantly throughout the Beaver State. Budget-conscious Oregonians may look to some of the state’s more affordable locations, such as Eugene ($4,025) and Albany ($4,210). The state’s most expensive assisted living facilities are in Grants Pass, where seniors pay $5,390 per month, on average.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Gresham, so data for Portland, the closest city, was used.
The cost of senior care in Gresham varies significantly based on the type of care a senior needs, as revealed by Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey. Seniors who require the extensive care provided by nursing homes pay an average of $9,125 per month, $4,300 more than their counterparts in assisted living. Seniors who want to age in place pay an average of $5,339 for home health aides or homemaker services; this is about $500 more than assisted living. In addition, seniors who opt for in-home care are still responsible for their regular monthly expenses, including rent and groceries. For seniors who move into assisted living, these expenses are generally included in the monthly fees.
Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that helps children, pregnant women, seniors and other eligible low-income Americans access necessary health care. In Oregon, Medicaid is known as the Oregon Health Plan. Approximately 850,000 Oregonians — one-fifth of the state’s population — receive health insurance through OHP.
This program provides coverage for many health care services, including hearing aids, home health care, hospital care, laboratory tests and medical equipment.
Aged, Blind and Disabled
Seniors who live in Oregon may qualify for OHP’s Aged, Blind and Disabled category if they:
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly provides community-based care to frail seniors. This care includes all Medicaid and Medicare-covered services as well as any other necessary medical care. In Oregon, these services include assisted living care, adult day services, transportation, therapeutic services and community nursing.
Seniors may be eligible if they need a nursing home level of care but could live safely in the community if they receive PACE services. PACE participants must live in a PACE provider’s service area and be 55 years of age or older.
Gresham’s PACE provider is Providence ElderPlace. Seniors can call (503) 574-6595 to learn more about this provider’s services.
Questions about the PACE program can also be directed to the Department of Human Services PACE Coordinator at (844) 224-7223.
Oregon Supplemental Income Program
The Oregon Supplemental Income program provides cash assistance to eligible seniors. Seniors may qualify if they fall into one of these groups:
The Gresham Senior Center offers many daily activities for seniors. These include writing groups, ceramics classes, line dancing, bingo and tai chi. It also provides helpful resources, such as computer labs and low-vision support groups. The center organizes group outings to local destinations, such as restaurants, museums and theaters.
