I just placed my mom in assisted living at Evergreen Place. We chose it because it was closer to my house and to my family. I have a family that lives in Brockport and Hamlin, and they were closer to her. It's very clean, looks new, and they are all very friendly. My mom's been there for two days now. They have a beauty salon, a barber shop, a library, and a lot of living rooms that they can go to. They have activities and bingo. They do laundry once a week, they do her linens, and they keep everything very clean. Right now, she's quarantined into her room because of the COVID, so she hasn't been able to go to the dining room. She's been getting her meals in her room, but she seems to be eating fine. She says the food is great. It's a very nice facility. When you drive up to it, it looks very nice.

I thought Heather Heights was very nice. The young lady who gave us the tour, Erin, was very knowledgeable, and she had all the answers that we were looking for. The facility has a lot to offer. It's a good assisted living organization, and it seemed to have a lot of good social interactions for getting the residents out and about. We're strongly looking at it right now, and we're probably going to bring my mom in there next week for her to decide, "Yes, this is the place that will be OK for me," or not. I didn't try the food, but we saw the menus, and they looked very nice. The facility offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as an ice-cream shop that's open every day at certain times. The menu was very open to dietary needs, so it looked pretty good to us. The facility was clean, it was organized, it was in a nice location, and it had a lot of amenities to it.

Fleming Point was very nice. The staff there was also very good, but it's too expensive. They showed me their studio-type apartments, and they were breathtaking. They were doing exercises during my visit. The facility looked well maintained.

It's wonderful. The best place. I love it. They take their time and they answer all your questions, and you feel comfortable. I like my apartment. I just have a studio, one person, one bedroom. They clean, they vacuum once a week, and they clean the toilet and stuff, which I do every day but they come and do it, too. The food is average. I was in another place before this and the food is about the same. When you're feeding a lot of people, it's very hard to accommodate everybody. I'll be 91 and no matter what age you are, they're very accommodating. You don't have to worry, you're very safe here. It was hard getting used to when you leave your home, but I do like it.

My mom was in Solstice Senior Living. We ended up renting a studio for her. It was small, but it was clean, and it was perfect. There was no edge on the tub so she could get in and out, the bathroom was large enough, and we could set up her walker, but when she moved in she was in really bad shape. There was a tiny refrigerator and a tiny kitchenette, but everything was right there. The laundry room was a couple of doors away, everything was indoors, and the dining room was very nice. The staff was great. It was pricey like you would expect, because you get all these services, but you can pay for services as needed. Unfortunately, they don't take insurance, but you can have your own insurance covered. They have free transportation as long as you set up stuff ahead of time. It was really for someone with limited abilities who still wants to live independently. She even had a little backdoor patio overlooking some woods in the ravine. I was really pleased with it. The facility is very nice; it's like walking into a very nice hotel. The lobby is beautiful, there's a lot going on there, there's decorations, they have an upstairs, a downstairs, and an elevator. Part of the rent is a button, like a life alert button, so no matter where you are, even if you're off-site, they can ping your button to find out where you were. That was something I thought was excellent about Solstice.

My mother moved into The Village at Unity, and so far so good. They're very helpful and very nice. She has a 1-bedroom, they serve her meals, they provide transportation, and they've a number of activities. They have outings to different stores, different restaurants, they have schools come in and do shows, and they have music every week. They play cards, they have movies, and parties. They have a beauty salon, a library, a garden, exercise rooms, and a yoga studio.

Fleming Point was a very nice facility, the apartments were large, and the staff was good. They gave a full tour, and I saw the independent living section. The drawback was the location, it was farther away.

Solstice Senior Living at Fairport was a bit expensive, but it's very big and they had a lot of amenities. They had a nice cafeteria and a piano player when I was there. The two-bedroom was very spacious, and it had a kitchenette, a microwave, and central air.

Baywinde Senior Living was lovely. What I liked best about this community is that it's very clean and it probably has the most resident interaction. It's a very active place; you could really see the activities. The two resident ambassadors that I spoke with who were both 94-years-old were very active, involved, and they were very proud of where they live. It was lovely.

Medicaid is the government health plan that provides mandatory benefits, such as hospital services, doctor visits and long-term care, to low-income Americans and eligible immigrants. In Pennsylvania, Medicaid is known as Medical Assistance, and long-term care coverage with access to community waivers is available to seniors who meet Medicaid’s criteria.
Qualifying for Medical Assistance
Individuals aged 65 and older can earn up to $2,313 per month and own a maximum of $8,000 in countable assets. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or qualified immigrants, have a valid Social Security number and be permanent residents of Pennsylvania.
Some assets are exempt, such as a house, condominium or mobile home that’s the principal residence of the applicant and/or their spouse. Also exempt is one vehicle, a prepaid burial contract, personal effects and household furnishings.
Medicaid Aging Waiver
Seniors aged 60 and older who qualify for Medicaid and need the level of care normally provided in a nursing home may be eligible for the Aging Waiver, a home and community-based waiver program.
The AW lets seniors avoid nursing home placement by funding enhanced community-based services in an assisted living setting. These services are assigned on a case-by-case basis to address the needs identified in the preadmission assessment, and may include:
Optional State Supplementation
Monroe County seniors who are aged 65 or older, on Social Security Income and reside in a care facility, such as assisted living, may qualify for additional cash benefits through the Optional State Supplementation program.
The OSS benefits are designed to help seniors cover the room-and-board portion of their monthly living costs. Monthly increased SSI payments depend upon the individual’s income and residence. Seniors can receive as little as $30 monthly to a maximum of $1,210.30 in combined federal and state payments ($60 to $2,114.40 for couples).
To apply for the OSS, contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Elderlife Financial Assisted Living Bridge Loan
Seniors who are selling their home, liquidating investments or waiting for benefits to cover their assisted living costs may qualify for an assisted living bridge loan.
Offered through Elderlife Financial, a bridge loan is a short-term lending product that provides qualified seniors with access to funds they can use to cover assisted living move-in fees and monthly costs. The loan is set up like a line of credit, therefore, interest is only charged on the money used rather than the preapproved amount.
Applicants need to have a good credit score, and up to six people can be listed on the loan. There are no fees to apply and the application can be completed online or over the phone in as little as 15 minutes. Seniors approved can usually access the funds within 24 hours, and money from the bridge loan can be sent directly to the assisted living facility.
For more information contact Elderlife Financial at (888) 228-4500.
