My parents have been living at Brookdale Franklin for a little over three years. It's been fabulous and they really have been great. The staff is very attentive and caring. They have a personalized living service that you can hire somebody if you need extra things done. They have someone at the front desk 24 hours a day. Even though they're living independently in their own apartment and their meals are made for them, it feels like there are always watchful eyes on them, which I think you need to have if you're going to cater to the elderly. The rooms are very comfortable and great. We got to sign in during a time where they were doing a special that your rent would never go up as long as you lived there which was a great deal. Since my parents moved in, they repainted and re-carpeted their place. They have weekly trips if you want to go Walmart and Kroeger. As far as the facility, they actually have a little theater room that probably 30 people can sit in, which makes it really nice because it makes you feel like you've almost gone out on an outing when you're not driving anymore. The food is very good and I have been very impressed. Another nice thing is they can use the laundry facilities anytime they want.

Brookdale Franklin is fine, everything looks great and clean. They have bus tours, movies, trips to the grocery store and that sort of thing. Our room is fine, it's a 2-bedroom and 2-bath with a living room. By definition, the apartment is small. We have a common dining room which is a nice place to go to. The meals are okay. They're providing food for our age group and the variety of people that we have, and it's going to be pretty bland. Overall, it's pretty good value. They maintain the facilities very well, I see the maintenance going around all the time. I would advise for others to personally check out this community, and not rely on reviews. The residents are very friendly people.

We toured and it was very good, and it's got a homey feeling to it, and not an institution. The food is very good, the dining area is welcoming and very nice, and they have scheduled activities every day.

It is a pretty good place, and the staff is fine. My first impression when I went there was it's like moving into a farm house. The dining area is OK, although it's just a bunch of tables. They have a lot of activities for the residents, like nurses who come in and talk about different things, documentaries, exercise classes, and a little bit of everything. They also have puzzles and bingo, and a library.

We moved in. I liked that it's strictly independent living and we found a nice apartment that suits us really well. They serve three meals a day. Everybody's just great. We haven't done much, but there's a lot of activities. They just finished having an ice cream social, and we're going to the symphony. They have cards and pool, and they take people shopping and to their doctors' appointments. I already met the housekeeper for our hallway and she's just a sweetheart. We have our own car right now, but they also offer a bus to the doctors' offices. There's housekeeping, and they provide sheets and towels and they change all that out. The plant superintendent came in and we wanted to put a chest in the closet and it wasn't going to fit, so he took out the doors and it's just perfect, he's been very sweet.

It is independent living, but there are nurses and a call button for me to wear around my neck for emergencies in case I fall. It's got GPS and they'll come to get me if that happens. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by a chef. They have a library, popcorn machine, and other amenities.

Everything about it was perfect. It overlooked the Williamson County Recreation Center. It was the perfect place for my sister-in-law. It was a beautiful place. The rooms were beautiful and new. They were large, and they have lots of sunlight. They seemed to have everything that you would need.

The Manor at Steeplechase was one of the places we visited and liked. I saw a library, a pool table, and workout area. I also saw a room, and I wished it was bigger. The staff that I met was very nice, accommodating, and answered all of our questions. Overall, it’s a very nice community.

I chose The Manor of Steeplechase because it had what I needed. I can take care of myself to some extent, but I can't do it completely, and I didn't want to continue to have a person come over 3 or 4 days a week. The choice was go to a retirement home or Steeplechase. I can't drive anymore. I gave up my car, so I am dependent upon the people here. I have access to transportation along with food since they provide meals and housekeeping for me, which are things that I would have difficulty doing on my own. In my studio, I have a little refrigerator, and of course a bathroom that I can adjust to suit my need for taking a shower without a leg. There's a laundry facility 30 steps away that I can use anytime I want. Plus, they provide the transportation if I need to do some shopping at the grocery store or the drug store or need to go to the doctors. The staff is great and very responsive to my and everybody's needs. In addition to regular staff, they also have a homecare staff that helps people who are a lot more dependent than I am. They may need to be moved in a wheelchair or assistance with bathing and dressing, so that's available there, too. They have a number of activities, like exercise activities, different entertainment activities, and churches who come in and do services on Sunday. I have been a Bible teacher fo 45 years, and I am conducting a Bible class here once a week. They have a number of other people who come here and entertain them a lot, and they try different things like card playing, poker, and bingo that a lot of people enjoy.

Medicaid in Tennessee
Approximately 1.6 million Tennessee seniors, children and adults with disabilities are covered by Medicaid, a government-funded health program. Seniors must be aged 65 or older, a permanent resident of Tennessee and have a valid Social Security number to apply for TennCare, the state Medicaid program. Seniors must also have a maximum monthly income of $2,313 per person and own no more than $2,000 in countable assets, such as cash, stocks, bonds, and real estate.

TennCare CHOICES in Long-Term Services and Support
Seniors aged 65 and older who meet the financial criteria for TennCare coverage and require the level of care normally provided in a nursing facility may qualify for TennCare CHOICES. This home and community-based Medicaid waiver program funds services to let seniors remain in a community setting.
The CHOICES program is also open to seniors who don’t meet Medicaid’s criteria for nursing home placement but require some home-care services to maintain their independence in a noninstitutional setting.
CHOICES covers a wide range of home-care services, such as:
- Personal care to assist with bathing, grooming, meal preparation and toileting
- A personal medical alert device
- Adult day health programming
- Assistive technologies, such as grabber tools and magnifiers
- Pest control to manage bugs or mice
- Respite care
- Minor home modifications
Seniors who need nursing home care may be enrolled in CHOICES if the cost of their home care is no greater than the cost of placement in a nursing facility. Seniors who are at-risk of nursing home placement may be provided with up to $15,000 worth of annual home-care services through CHOICES.
CHOICES is administered through a managed care organization contracted by TennCare. To apply for the CHOICES program, contact the Council on Aging of Middle Tennessee at (615) 353-4235.
