Highland Estates was wonderful. The rooms were larger than I expected, well-appointed, and clean. The staff was wonderful. The dining room was like eating in a restaurant. I highly recommend it to anybody. They're pet friendly, which was the deciding factor why we chose it.

I visited Highland Estates, and I liked it, but they didn't have a 2-bedroom apartment available at the time. It looked beautiful, they have so many beautiful things out, and the place was really friendly. They had a 1-bedroom with a balcony, and they had really good food. We ate there several times. The staff was really friendly, called me all the time, and let me know if they had anything available. The residents looked very happy, and everybody was very friendly. They have transportation where you can go shopping, or to the doctor's office.
The 2018 Genworth Cost of Care study reveals that the cost of assisted living in Cedar Park is the highest in Texas at $5,190 per month. This is significantly more expensive than both the state ($3,795) and national ($4,000) averages.
The cost of assisted living is much lower in the nearby central Texas city of San Antonio ($3,957). It’s also less costly in coastal cities such as Houston ($3,863) and Corpus Christi ($2,975). The most affordable assisted living costs are found in El Paso ($2,250), where seniors pay less than half the amount of their counterparts in Cedar Park.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Cedar Park. Data for Austin, the closest metropolitan area, has been used.
Depending on the type of care Cedar Park seniors need, they can expect to pay vastly different monthly costs. Seniors who only need care during daytime hours will pay an average of $1,408 per month for adult day health services. Seniors who prefer a residential setting and the extra services provided in an assisted living facility will pay over three times that amount. In Cedar Park, as in other cities across the country, seniors who require 24/7 care in a nursing home pay the highest cost per month. Here, the average cost is $5,323.
Medicaid is a government-funded program that provides health care coverage to eligible low-income people across the country. In Texas, more than four million people receive coverage including pregnant women, children, adults with disabilities and senior citizens. Those eligible for Texas Medicaid receive medically necessary services including doctors visits, inpatient and outpatient hospital services, home health services and community-based or nursing home care.
Texas residents may qualify for Medicaid coverage if they meet certain income limits. The annual allowable income is $24,731 for single applicants and $33,482 for couples. Seniors who exceed these limits may qualify for the state’s Medicaid Buy-In program, which lets them make monthly payments to receive coverage.
Texas residents can apply for Medicaid online or request assistance by calling (877) 541-7905.
STAR+PLUS Waiver Program
STAR+PLUS is a Medicaid waiver program that provides services to eligible seniors and adults with disabilities through managed care plans. In addition to all the benefits provided by regular Medicaid, participants in the program can receive long-term care services and supports such as:
Optional State Supplementation
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income from the federal government may be eligible for a monthly top-up payment from the state of Texas. This optional state supplementation may be used toward assisted living room-and-board costs.
The maximum OSS payment for a single senior is $60 per month. Couples who’ve lived in assisted living for more than 30 days are treated as individuals and can receive up to $60 each.
For more information or to apply for OSS benefits, contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Community Care for the Aged and Disabled
The Community Care for the Aged and Disabled program helps seniors who aren’t self-sufficient avoid nursing home placement. The program covers a variety of home and community-based services, including 24-hour residential care in a licensed assisted living facility.
Seniors who qualify for SSI or Medicaid meet the program’s income requirements. They must also have less than $5,000 in countable resources ($6,000 for couples), which include cash, money market funds, saving certificates, tax refunds and insurance settlements. Some assets are exempt, such as a senior’s primary residence and one car.
To learn more about CCAD or to begin the application process, contact the Capital Area Aging and Disability Resource Center or call (855) 937-2372.
Cedar Park residents who are 50 years of age or older can join the city’s senior center. Here, they can get together for breakfasts and lunches or participate in card or board games, seminars, day trips and other scheduled activities. Dancing, golfing and exercise classes provide the opportunity to socialize while getting some enjoyable exercise.
