I really liked them. The people were really nice. It was pretty. It looked like the residents were well taken care of. It wasn't overly big. It wasn't a place that I would think would be overwhelming for a resident. It was very clean, and it looked like it was recently updated. I think that they had just done some remodeling, so it was really nice. I was accommodated really good. We were greeted at the door and they took us for a tour throughout the facility. I think that place had a really nice courtyard in the back. They took us everywhere, showed us everything, and they told us how they were accommodating visiting family members with the COVID virus going around. They were very informative.

My mother-in-law lived here for two years. There's no assisted living there. It's all independent living, but it's meant for senior citizens. It's very good. She would still be there if it wasn't for her change. Actually, they're now getting home health services there, so they're having more medicine management and PT and OT. They have a third party in-house that's going to help them with that kind of stuff, which will be good. The meals were really good. For the rooms, you have a choice of studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom. They have everything. Every day, they had something going on whether it's bingo, Wii games, movies, and ice cream socials. I don't know now because of Covid, but pre-Covid, they had entertainers come in on the weekend with music. It's a very full calendar if you want it to be. The facility was older, but they kept it really clean.

Perfect. The staff is wonderful. My apartment is very clean. I rather not discuss the food because I'm a bad diabetic and I'm on several diets. Here, I have to eat regular food. I'm not really sure about the amenities because I have sort of a business of my own and I mostly stay in my room, but there are a lot of activities if a person is willing to go and able to go. I don't need any kind of extra thing but I have a television and I have books I can read if I ever get through with paperwork. I got everything I need. My room is very nice. It's not just a room; I have a complete kitchen with a full-sized stove, a full-sized refrigerator, a microwave and a dishwasher. I wish it had a garbage disposal, but it doesn't. I have a wash room that has a full-sized washer and dryer in it that no one uses but me. It's just very nice.

My mom is at Heritage Oaks for two weeks now, and they try hard, and it seems like its going to work. The room seems pleasant, ad the staff seems to be working hard to assimilate my mom. Its clean and modern looking. I dont think they have enough staff members. The activities are geared towards assisted living. They have games, a TV where they can watch movies, and trips outside the facility.

I enjoyed the visit at Heritage Oaks. The people who showed me around certainly knew what they were talking about and knew their community well. The typical things they offer to help someone adapt to a place like that were quite nice. I enjoyed the way they handled it and their willingness to help incorporate new people in the community. The rooms were adequate and weren't among the largest I saw, but they're certainly adequate and would have been accommodating for my mother. They offered card games, take people to nearby shopping malls, and lunches on special days and with special visitors.

My visit at The Wellington at Conroe was quite good. I enjoyed it. It was modern and refreshed. They took a lot of care so the place was clean and spotless. People around are very helpful, and I've seen residents that were involved in activities. I got to know how the place works. What stands out most is that it's a much more modern and refreshed place than others. They offered exercise for the residents, Bible classes, card games, and things like that. The dining area was quite nice and inviting, it's one of the best I've seen. They said I could stay and have lunch with them if I liked.

My mother is in Heritage Oaks. I like the staff, the cleanliness, and the setup. It's not really busy. They have nice little kitchenette apartments with all the basics. The staff is very personal and seems genuine. The food is good. They have plenty of entertainment options for the folks who stay there. They have church groups come in, kids do little Christmas plays, and have something for all the holidays. They also have bingo, exercise and workouts for them to participate in, different games, dominos, movies and popcorn all the time, and ice cream. There are little areas for them to socialize and a big courtyard that's completely surrounded by the building. They have pet turtles with numbers on them that they watch and play with. They keep their minds busy. It's a very nice facility.

The Wellington at Conroe is where we are going to go, but it didn't work out because my mother-in-law passed away. I liked it. We thought it was homey and cozy. We were ready to go there. The staff members were all friendly. Everybody was very nice. We found the residents to be nice too. We had lunch with them one day to try it out and it was all good. The staff was nice. They have good amenities. The room was lovely. It was re-done and painted. The place was just fresh and clean. I couldn't say more about it.

Heritage Oaks was very nice. The apartment was smaller. However, even though it was smaller, it was clean. It would have been fine. The staff member who helped me was very nice. The staff members were great people. Nobody was unkind. They were all helpful; I found all of them to be wonderful. The place was very friendly, but a little more institutional-like. The place was nice, but it was a different set-up.

Care Cost Comparison
Geographic location has a major influence on the price of senior care, but the type of care chosen is also a key factor. In Conroe, the average monthly rate for assisted living is almost three times the cost of adult day health services ($1,300). Skilled, 24-hour care in a nursing home averages $5,095 per month, which is over $1,200 more expensive than assisted living. For $3,909 and $4,099, respectively, seniors can receive care services at home from a homemaker or home health aide. While these rates seem fairly comparable with the cost of assisted living, seniors who choose in-home care are still responsible for expenses, such as utilities, groceries, property taxes and upkeep. Housing and food-related expenses are usually included in assisted living fees under room and board.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Conroe
Medicaid in Texas
The Medicaid program that provides free health care to low-income, low-resource Americans is a jointly funded initiative of the federal and state governments. Each state adapts and manages its own Medicaid program to best meet the needs of its residents within a framework of federal regulations.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission administers the Medicaid program that provides health care for 4.5 million state residents, including pregnant women, children, disabled and blind people and the elderly. In Texas, Medicaid services are delivered through state-approved managed care providers.
Texas residents who meet Medicaid’s eligibility guidelines receive a number of vital health care services, including doctor and specialist visits, emergency, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, X-rays, labs and other diagnostic tests, prescriptions, nonemergency medical transportation, ambulance services and long-term care in a nursing home.
Qualifying for Medicaid
To qualify for Texas Medicaid for long-term care, Conroe residents must be U.S. citizens or legal residents and:
- Be aged 65 or older
- Be aged 64 or younger with a disability that persists for at least one year
- Have a monthly income of $2,313 or less and resources of $2,000 or less as an individual
- Have a monthly income of $4,626 or less and resources of $3,000 or less as a couple applying together
All sources of income count toward the Medicaid eligibility limits, but some resources are excluded, including personal belongings, household furnishings and effects, an irrevocable burial trust, one car and a primary home worth up to $585,000.
Seniors who meet the income and asset limits of the Supplemental Security Income program automatically qualify for Texas Medicaid and are enrolled when they apply for SSI through the Social Security Administration.
When the spouse of an applicant doesn’t need coverage, their income is excluded. Based on Medicaid rules to avert impoverishment of a community spouse, the non-applicant may also be awarded up to $3,160.50 of their spouse’s monthly income and 50% of jointly owned assets up to $126,420.
Conroe seniors who exceed the Medicaid income limits but meet all other qualification criteria can reduce their monthly earnings by establishing a Qualified Income Trust. Excess income gets deposited into the trust each month, and it no longer counts toward the limit. Funds can only be withdrawn by the account’s designated trust agent and used to pay Medicaid-approved medical and care expenses.
Applying for Medicaid
Seniors in Conroe can contact Your Texas Benefits helpline at (877) 541-7905 or apply for Medicaid online.
STAR+PLUS Waiver Program
Seniors who require long-term care but want to avoid nursing home admission can apply for the Texas Medicaid STAR+PLUS waiver. Those approved for the program are enrolled in a managed care plan that provides comprehensive medical and long-term care services and supports. All the medical services offered through Texas Medicaid are included, along with care coordination and other services necessary to meet the enrollee’s care needs, which may include:
- Transition assistance to relocate from a nursing home
- Assisted living services, including personal care
- Nursing care
- Occupational, physical and speech therapy
- Medical supplies
- Adaptive aides
Applicants must be assessed to verify their need for a nursing-home level of care and enrolled in Medicaid with full benefits. Additional program-specific eligibility criteria must be met, including enrollment in Medicaid, receiving SSI benefits and residing in a nursing home.
Conroe residents can contact the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging at (713) 627-3200 to learn more about the STAR+PLUS program or apply.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Optional State Supplementation

Seniors and disabled adults can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 to apply for SSI and Texas OSS benefits.
Community Care for the Aged and Disabled
The federally-funded Community Care for the Aged and Disabled program can provide needed assistance to Texas seniors at risk of nursing home placement. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to qualify and need help on a daily basis because of disability or functional impairment. Anyone receiving similar services through Medicaid can’t qualify. Single applicants are limited to $2,313 in monthly income and $5,000 in assets. For married co-applicants, the limits are $4,626 and $6,000, respectively.
The services offered through CCAD vary based on a participant’s living situation. In an assisted living setting, it provides personal care, help with activities of daily living and 24-hour supervision. Participants need to contribute to their care costs by paying the room and board portion.
For more information about the CCAD program or to apply, Conroe residents can contact the Houston-Galveston AAA at (713) 627-3200.
