I am/was a resident of this facility

I have moved into Watercrest at Kingwood. I like the care that they provide. The staff is very nice. I have a one-bedroom apartment. I like the walk-in shower, and I think I have almost everything I want. I usually do my own cooking. They have a walking area, a room where you can be with your family, a room for activities, and a library. They really have a lot of things. Not everybody can afford to live here, but it seems like a good place.

I visited this facility

I visited Cypress Wood. It's a smaller community than the other two that we toured. The sales manager knew everybody that lives there. She was very knowledgeable, and she also helps quite a bit with financial issues. She was very informational, and her mother actually lived there. This woman was very good at it. We were only there for an hour though. They had choices for the sizes of the rooms. They also had some optional balconies and places outside if you got a 1st floor unit. You can put up a little fence and keep your animals and give them a little place to get out and whatever, like dogs. It was pet friendly. It was just older, and it was kind of obvious that it was older. They only had a kitchenette, so that was the downfall. As far as amenities, they had a bicycle, no big room or anything, no pool, but they had a very small library and they had a walking trail around the unit itself. They are conveniently located to some shopping. Another plus for them would be they're not on a major thoroughfare. They're back in a neighborhood, so you can get out on your scooter and cross the street with no problem. They had large grounds. It's a smaller unit, but they're close to some other things to do.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Please don’t send your loved one to this facility. We put my father in this care facility. He only lasted two days before passing away. He needed oxygen, but otherwise okay. After only two days he was gone in their care. We will never know what happened to him. We went to check on him and the front door was locked and no one would answer the door. We never saw him alive again. Stay away!

Reunion Court of Kingwood's rooms were dark. However, the staff member that greeted me at the front door and the lady that took us on a tour were very nice. The residents seemed friendly too; however, the activity level wasn't as great as others. The activities were very nice. They have a library, an activity room, and a courtyard that was lovely. Other than the rooms being dark, the place itself was very nice.

Watercrest at Kingwood has a good setup. One thing we liked about it was that it had a full-sized kitchen instead of a hotel kitchen. They have a chapel, movie theater, and they play bingo. They also have an activities room.

Cypress Woods was nice. They're very accommodating and the personnel was great. If I had to choose, I'd probably go to that facility. The apartments were bigger than others and they included a kitchenette. They also supply three meals a day, which was dine-in. I like the way it operates. They had a bottom floor and I have a big dog and they accept big dogs. It had a back door where you could go out and you don't have to take the dogs to the lobby. The lady that showed me around was very nice. They invited me back for their 4th of July dinner and activities. I had dinner there and I liked the food. They had excellent staff. I liked the outside and everything had been manicured. They have activities and rooms where you could read. The setup was better than the other facilites we looked at.

Watercrest at Kingwood was the best for us. The reason we liked them as opposed to all the other places we looked at is the floor plans are more spacious. You don’t feel like you’re cramped in, and the floor plans were usable. In addition, what really excited us was you could actually have a washer and dryer in your own apartment. You don’t have to go down the hall and line up at 5 in the morning to wash your clothes, which is a big deal to us. It was strongly recommended to us. The other thing we liked -- which was sort of a surprise -- is they actually have a heated pool that covered so you can swim in all year round -- which is kind of neat too because most other places don’t have that. It’s a very pleasant surprise. The other thing we were surprised about is a place where you could move in if you’re 55 and there are still a fair amount of people living there that are still working, which was a pleasant surprise to me -- very active environment.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

Arbor Terrace is very clean, the residents seem happy, and the staff knows the name of every resident. The menu is nice, and there are nice activities all day long. The rooms were very nice; they cleaned the carpets and painted the walls before we moved in, so it was all clean, bright, and airy. The food is very good, and they have everything you would want on the table to make it to your liking. I chose this for my dad because it was five minutes from my house.

Care Cost Comparison

Senior care costs depend on several factors, including the type, frequency and duration of care. This is reflected in Kingwood costs for senior care, which range from $1,300 for adult day health services to nearly $7,000 for a private nursing home room. Assisted living facilities have rates similar to in-home care, but the difference is that this rate typically includes food, utilities and rent. Seniors who age at home with help from health aides or other caretakers must consider how regular household expenses impact their ability to pay for medical care.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Kingwood

Medicaid in Texas

Qualifying Kingwood seniors can use Medicaid for long-term care. Dual coverage is an option if you currently participate in Medicare, but medical providers must bill Medicare first. Medicare is the primary insurance policy, and Medicaid is the secondary insurance policy. Medicaid covers some services that Medicare rejects.

Recipients must meet income and asset limits prior to receiving Medicaid. As of 2019, applicants age 65 and older cannot earn more than $771 per month. Married applicants can earn a combined monthly income of up to $1,057.

For individual applicants, assets must not exceed $2,000. Married couples can retain assets of up to $3,000. Seniors who own cars or homes that exceed these asset limits may be able to request exemptions so they qualify for coverage.

There are fewer income restrictions for Medicaid recipients who receive nursing home care or need home and community-based services. Single applicants can receive up to $2,313 in monthly income, and married couples can have as much as $4,626 in monthly income.

Seniors can apply for Medicaid by visiting a community partner, dialing 2-1-1, submitting a paper application or applying online at YourTexasBenefits.com.

The STAR+PLUS Waiver

The STAR+PLUS waiver is a managed care program offered to Texas Medicaid recipients. Due to limited enrollment, some applicants get denied despite meeting eligibility requirements. This Medicaid program covers in-home support for seniors, but it also covers some respite care expenses for qualified caretakers.

The Community First Choice (CFC) Program

The CFC, officially known as the Community First Choice program, is an entitlement program, which means benefits are guaranteed for eligible applicants. Applicants who get denied for the STAR+PLUS waiver or other limited-enrollment programs may still qualify for the CFC.

The CFC program provides funds for personal care needs, and it also covers some expenses for in-home support services, such as meal delivery. Recipients must require assistance with at least one everyday task, such as cooking or bathing, to receive in-home support.

Day Activity and Health Services

Day Activity and Health Services is an adult day care program for seniors. This Medicaid program strives to let adults age at home rather than in assisted living facilities by providing primary caretakers with time away from their duties. The program covers adult day care and some similar health services.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Senior Bridge Loans

Elderlife Financial Services offers short-term bridge loans for seniors who need assisted living care. These loans are for short-term financial needs, such as seniors who need temporary assistance while waiting for a home to sell. Funds are available in as little as one day and disbursed directly to an approved senior living community or home care agency. You can apply for the loan on your own, with a spouse or with a group of up to six family members.

SSI State Supplementary Payments

There are 46 states, including Texas, that offer SSI state supplementary payments. Texas does this by supplementing Social Security payments for qualifying Medicaid recipients who require care in an intermediate care facility or a nursing home. Payments are distributed on a monthly basis.

The Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) administers supplementary SSI payments. Dial 2-1-1 to find an HHS office in the Kingwood area, or visit the My Texas Benefits site for information about local offices.
