My mother has been at Ponte Palmero for a couple of weeks now. I give all the staff a 10. They are so good, and compared to where she was before, this place is a palace. Everybody is so much more attentive and nicer. We've had no problems so far. It's been absolutely wonderful. Cleanliness is excellent. They have lots of programs and encourage you to participate. She's very happy to do the exercise class, and they're not overbearing or pressuring. They're very nice and have done a good job of getting her included. The facility looks great and well kept up, and the activities are great. It's a little pricy, but it's worth it. They're giving everything that they say they give you.

Ponte Palmero was very nice, but it was too expensive. It was very clean, had lots of activities, beautiful environment, and nice apartments. They had an exercise room and a pool. We just can't afford it. The staff was wonderful.

We like the housing in Ponte Palmero. We have a 2-bedroom and 2-bath unit with a full kitchen. They also provide all the amenities like meals, maintenance, and all that. The staff was very friendly and on top of things all the time, we just felt really comfortable. We like it has a country feel because it's not in the middle of the city. The place is pretty and well-taken care of. They also provide plenty of activities.

Ponte Palmero was too big and it was old. The gentleman that took us on the tour was nice, but he forgot to give us lunch. We were supposed to go there and have a bite of their food and we never did, but it was alright. I thought it wouldn't be too conducive for my mother because she is not really ambulatory. There were stairs. I was not as impressed. The rooms were big, but they weren't conducive for her. The lighting seemed to be too dark.

Eskaton Lodge Cameron Park was horrible. We went in there, and they were having a church service. The woman at the front desk was so unprofessional. She was taking us in the rooms and they hadn't even checked with some of the residents if it was OK if we walked in. She didn't offer a lot of information. I didn't like it at all. It was old and dirty looking to me.

Ponte Palmero was a very nice facility that was closer to my house. I would have lived there. The food and amenities were first-class. They had lovely gardens and garages, which was different because most people didn’t drive. The independent living units were very nice, but there wasn't any space in memory care.

Eskaton was very well kept and took really good care of my loved one. I was pleased with the place. The staff was right there when he needed help.

I didn’t like Eskaton Lodge. It had a much more skilled nursing feeling to it and wasn’t what we were looking for. We’re still looking for more of an independent feel that has the ability to transfer over. I was kind of surprised at the handicapped aspect of it since I watched a gal needing help in her wheelchair go up this incline into the hallway. Out in the front, they have an area for residents to sit out that was right in front of the driveway. This one didn’t get high marks for me, and I don’t mean that because they weren’t gracious, because they were. The residents seemed happy, but from an outsider’s viewpoint looking in, that would not be my choice. The facility was clean. They had a table of people sitting around playing bingo and another group sitting in an area with a big TV.
As stated in Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, the average cost of assisted living in Cameron Park is $4,473 per month. While significantly higher than the national average of $4,000, this is still slightly lower than the California state average of $4,500 per month. Cameron Park’s cost of assisted living is much more expensive than in the nearby areas of Yuba City ($3,679), Stockton ($3,500) and Modesto ($3,200).
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Cameron Park, so data for the closest city, Sacramento, was used.

Similar to many U.S. cities, the cost of assisted living in Cameron Park is nearly 50% less than the around-the-clock skilled care provided in a nursing home. Although closer in cost, it’s also slightly less expensive than the monthly average cost of homemaker services ($4,767) and a home health aide ($4,957) in the city. These types of at-home health care don’t include the costs of additional living expenses, such as rent or mortgage, utilities, meals and home maintenance. Adult day health, where seniors visit a facility to socialize and receive care during daytime hours, is Cameron Park’s least expensive care type at an average cost of $1,733 per month.

Medi-Cal is the California Medicaid program providing services and essential health benefits to certain low-income seniors, pregnant women, families with children and people with disabilities. As a public health insurance option, services for seniors include wellness programs, chronic disease management, hospitalization and doctors visits, physical therapy, prescription drugs and mental health treatment.
To be eligible for Medi-Cal services and benefits, seniors must be either blind, disabled or at least 65 years old and meet the following income and asset requirements:
Seniors may also qualify for Medi-Cal if they:
For more information about Medi-Cal, call (800) 541-5555 or apply online.
Seniors enrolled in Medi-Cal may also benefit from one of two waivers: the Multipurpose Senior Services program and the Assisted Living waiver. It should be noted that these waivers are not entitlement programs, so individuals who qualify may be placed on a waiting list to receive services.
Multipurpose Senior Services Program
The Multipurpose Senior Services program is provided through the federal Home and Community-Based Medicaid waiver, and Medi-Cal members aged 65 and older may be eligible to participate in MSSP if they’re certified as requiring nursing facility level of care. MSSP provides services to seniors with the aim of delaying or preventing entry into a nursing home facility, and they can include personal care assistance, counseling, care management through a team of social workers and nurses, transportation services, home modifications and respite for caregivers.
El Dorado County residents can find out more about MSSP by calling (530) 621-6278.
Assisted Living Waiver
The Medi-Cal Assisted Living waiver provides transition services for seniors, helping them move to a residential care facility or public subsidized housing from a nursing home. While participants are required to pay for their own room and board, the cost is discounted to $1,039.37 for those who receive an SSI of $1,173.37 and $1,059.37 for individuals with an income of $1,193.37 or higher. Covered services include skilled nursing care, meals, transportation and housekeeping services.
Cameron Park residents must be willing to move to an assisted living facility in one of the following California counties to receive services: Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Sonoma.
Additionally, Medi-Cal members hoping to enroll in the ALW must first work with a Care Coordination Agency to undergo an assessment of care needs.
Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits
For veterans and their surviving spouses in Cameron Park, financial assistance may be available on top of their regular monthly pension through one of two programs.
The Aid and Attendance Program is available to seniors over age 65 who earn an annual income of less than $22,577 as an individual or $26,765 with a spouse or one or more dependents. Assets must also be kept below $126,000, not counting the participant’s vehicles or primary home.
Additionally, vets or surviving spouses must be one of the following:
Senior and community centers in and around Cameron Park provide seniors with art classes, games and fitness classes at a limited cost. The facilities also serve as a gathering place for local seniors to socialize and interact with volunteers and other members of the community.
